  • In the precision measurement of the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) or reflection coefficient by means of the slotted line technique, one of the important factors is the maximum error due to the discontinuities and multi-reflection in the slotted line. Particularly, this error becomes a critical factor when the VSWR or the reflection coefficient to be measured is very small. In this paper, the exact expression of this error is obtained by means of the Signal flow graph method.

  • In this study, the flow field and the recirculation phenomena are investigated numerically for the model around a tunnel entrance and exit. It turns out that the air entering to the tunnel entrance comes mostly from the upper region of the entrance implying that maintaining the air clear in that region is important for the inside-tunnel ventilation. We also found that the recirculation of the exhaust gas from the exit to the entrance has a maximum effect when the flow velocity at the exit is somewhat lower than that of the entrance.

  • The objective of this study is an understanding of the effect of inlet flow angle on the output power performance of a Francis hydraulic turbine, An optimum induced angle at the inlet of the turbine is one of the most important design parameters to have the best performance of the turbine at a given operating condition, In general. rotating speed of the turbine is varied with the change of water mass flowrate in a volute, The induced angle of the inlet water should be properly adjusted to the operating condition to have maximum energy conversion efficiency of the turbine, In this study. a numerical simulation was conducted to have detail understanding of the flow phenomenon in the flow path and output power of the model Francis turbine. The indicated power produced by the model turbine at a given operating condition was found numerically and compared to the brake power of the turbine measured by experiment at KIER. From comparison of two results, turbine efficiency or energy conversion efficiency of the model turbine was estimated. From the study, it was found that the rotating power of the turbine linearly increased with the rotating speed. It means that the higher volume flow rate supplied. the bigger torque on the turbine shaft generated. The maximum brake efficiency of the turbine is around 46$\%$ at 35 degree of induced angle. The difference between numerical and experimental output of the model turbine is defined as mechanical efficiency. The maximum mechanical efficiency of the turbine is around 93$\%$ at 25$\∼$30 degree of induced angle.

  • Four types of electrolyte were tested for the application as an electrolyte in the Zn-Br redox flow battery. Electrolyte was consist of $ZnBr_2$ (electrolyte number 1), $ZnBr_2+KCl$ (electrolyte number 2), $ZnBr_2+KCl+NH_4Br$ (electrolyte number 3) and $ZnBr_2+KCl+EMPBr(C_7H_{16}BF_4N)$ (electrolyte number 4). The each electrolyte property was measured by CV (cyclic voltammetry) method. The different between the potential of anodic and cathodic maximum current density in a CV experiment (${\Delta}E_P$) was 0.89V, 0.89V, 1.06V and 0.61V for the electrolyte number 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. The electrolyte involved KCl increased conductivity which was appeared by anodic and cathodic maximum current density in a CV experiment. It was estimated that the electrolyte of number 3 ($ZnBr_2+KCl+NH_4Br$) and number 4 ($ZnBr_2+KCl+EMPBr$) could be suitable as an electrolyte in the Zn-Br redox flow battery with non-appeared bubble, non-Br formation and high anodic-cathodic maximum current density.

  • The natural convection from an inclined ice flat plate immersed in cold water near its density maximum is studied numerically. Finite difference analysis has been performed for the heat and momentum transfer with respect to various inclined angles and ambient water temperatures. The results of the analysis are presented for ambient water temperatures, 1.0deg. C. leq. T/sub .inf./.leq. 15.0deg. C and the inclined anales from 0deg to 60deg. They include velocity profiles, temperature profiles, melting velocities, and mean Nusselt numbers for entire flow fields, Generally, in the range of 0deg. C .leq.theta. .leq. 60.deg. C, the results show three distinct flow regimes, In the range of 1.0 deg. C .leq. T/sub .inf./ .leq. 4.6 .deg. C, the greatest mean Nuselt number exists about 3.0deg. C. In the range of 5.7deg. C .leq. T/sub .inf./ .leq. 15.0deg. C, mean Nuselt number increases as ambient water temperature increases. Also, the mean Nuselt number decreases as the inclined angle increases. This theoretical results are compared with previous experimental ones and multiple steady state ones.

  • The performance of Lean NOx Trap (LNT) based on the catalysts of Pt/K/Ba/$\gamma-Al_2O_3$ with proprietary washcoat formulation is studied using a bench flow reactor system. To investigate the effect of temperature and gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) on the nitrogen oxides (NOx) trapping capacity as well as NOx breakthrough time and final ratio of $NO_2$ to NO of LNT, series of adsorption isotherms are carried out with simulated exhaust gases of the lean burn engines. Since typical operation of LNT requires periodic regeneration with a short rich excursion, where the stored or trapped NOx is released and subsequently reduced to $N_2$, the effect of the duration of lean and rich phase and type of reductants on the NOx conversion is investigated. NOx storage capacity and breakthrough time obtained from adsorption isotherms shows a volcano-type dependence on the temperature with a maximum NOx storage capacity occurring $350^{\circ}C$ and with a maximum breakthrough time occurring $400^{\circ}C$ at all GHSVs investigated in this study. Also, maximum ratio of $NO_2$ to NO is obtained at $400^{\circ}C$ with a GHSV of $75,000\;hr^{-1}$ Lean/rich cycle of 100 s lean and 5 s rich used with a concentration of 1.33% of $H_2$ and 4% of CO in the rich phase is found to be optimum at operating temperature of $350^{\circ}C$ and a GHSV of $50,000\;hr^{-1}$.

  • This study evaluated hydrological drought the using the annual minimum flow and the annual maximum deficit method and proposed the new concept of water deficit-duration-frequency curves similar to rainfall intensity-duration-frequency curves. The analysis results of the annual minimum flow, the return periods of hydrological drought in the most duration of 1989 and 1996yr were the longest. The analysis results of the annual maximum deficit, the return periods of 60-days and 90-day deficit which are relatively short duration were the longest in 1995yr, about 35-year, Hydrological drought lasted longer was in 1995, the return period was about 20-year. Though duration as well as magnitude is a key variable in drought analysis, it was found that the method using the annual minimum flow duration not distinguish duration.

  • This study investigated the accuracy of magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and computed tomography angiography (CTA) in terms of reflecting the actual vascular length. Three-dimensional time of flight (3D TOF) MRA, 3D contrast-enhanced (CE) MRA, volume-rendering after CTA and maximum intensity projection were investigated using a flow model phantom with a diameter of 2.11 mm and area of $0.26cm^2$. 1.5 and 3.0 Tesla devices were used for 3D TOF MRA and 3D CE MRA. CTA was investigated using 16 and 64 channel CT scanners, and the images were transmitted and reconstructed by volume-rendering and maximum intensity projection, followed by conduit length measurement as described above. The smallest 3D TOF MRA measure was $2.51{\pm}0.12mm$ with a flow velocity of 40 cm/s using the 3.0 Tesla apparatus, and $2.57{\pm}0.07mm$ with a velocity of 71.5 cm/s using the 1.5 Tesla apparatus; both images were magnified from the actual measurement of 2.11 mm. The measurement with the 16 channel CT scanner was smaller ($3.83{\pm}0.37mm$) than the reconstructed image on maximum intensity projection. The images from CTA from examination apparatus and reconstruction technique were all larger than the actual measurement.

  • Experiments have been performed to investigate effects of pulsating cathode flow on a 10-cell proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack. For all the experiments, the flow rate, temperature and relative humidity of hydrogen at the anode inlet are fixed. The effects of the pulsating frequency, amplitude and flow rate at the cathode inlet on performance of 10-cell PEMFC are examined. The polarization and power curves show that the power output and limiting current is substantially increased when the pulsating component is added to cathode flow channel. The maximum power output increases by up to 38% and enhancement of the overall performance is more pronounced at lower flow rate region.
