Effect of rib heights is found as significant parameter to enhance convective heat transfer performance under laminar and low turbulent regime. Circular ribs with different ribheight to channel height ratios, e/H = 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, are fabricated over the copper substrate respectively in a rectangular duct having 7.5 cross sectional aspect ratio. Only one rib pitch to rib height ratio (P/e = 10) has been chosen for all different height ribs. The result shows that the arithmetic average of turbulence intensity decreases with decreasing roughness height calculated between two ribs under laminar and low turbulent region. It occurs because the area of recirculation and reattachment zone also decreases with decreasing rib height. Optimum thermal enhancement factor is derived by 0.1 rib height to channel height ratio under low turbulent region but 0.15 rib height to channel height ratio gives maximum subjected to laminar flow.
Purpose: Laser treatment has become a popular method in implant dentistry, and lasers have been used for the decontamination of implant surfaces when treating peri-implantitis. This study was performed to evaluate the effects of an Erbium-doped:Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet (Er:YAG) laser with different settings on machined (MA), sand-blasted and acid-etched (SA), and resorbable blast media (RBM) titanium surfaces using scanning electron microscopy and confocal microscopy. Materials and Methods: Four MA, four SA, and four RBM discs were either irradiated at 40 mJ/20 Hz, 90 mJ/20 Hz, or 40 mJ/25 Hz for 2 minutes. The specimens were evaluated with scanning electron microscopy and confocal microscopy. Result: The untreated MA surface demonstrated uniform roughness with circumferential machining marks, and depressions were observed after laser treatment. The untreated SA surface demonstrated a rough surface with sharp spikes and deep pits, and the laser produced noticeable changes on the SA titanium surfaces with melting and fusion. The untreated RBM surface demonstrated a rough surface with irregular indentation, and treatment with the laser produced changes on the RBM titanium surfaces. The Er:YAG laser produced significant changes on the roughness parameters, including arithmetic mean height of the surface (Sa) and maximum height of the surface (Sz), of the MA and SA surfaces. However, the Er:YAG laser did not produce notable changes on the roughness parameters, such as Sa and Sz, of the RBM surfaces. Conclusion: This study evaluated the effects of an Er:YAG laser on MA, SA, and RBM titanium discs using confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Treatment with the laser produced significant changes in the roughness of MA and SA surfaces, but the roughness parameters of the RBM discs were not significantly changed. Further research is needed to evaluate the efficiency of the Er:YAG laser in removing the contaminants, adhering bacteria, and the effects of treatment on cellular attachment, proliferation, and differentiation.
Large eddy simulations have been performed within and over different types of urban building arrays. This paper adopted three dimensionless parameters, building frontal area density (${\lambda}_f$) the variation degree of building height (${\sigma}_h$), and the staggered degree of building range ($r_s$), to study the systematic influence of building spacing, height and layout on wind and turbulent characteristics. The following results have been achieved: (1) As ${\lambda}_f$ decrease from 0.25 to 0.18, the mean flow patterns transfer from "skimming" flow to "wake interference" flow, and as ${\lambda}_f$ decrease from 0.06 to 0.04, the mean flow patterns transfer from "wake interference" flow to "isolated roughness" flow. With increasing ${\lambda}_f$, wind velocity within arrays increases, and the vortexes in front of low buildings would break, even disappear, whereas the vortexes in front of tall buildings would strengthen and expand. Tall buildings have greater disturbance on wind than low buildings do. (2) All the wind velocity profiles and the upstream profile converge at the height of 2.5H approximately. The decay of wind velocity within the building canopy was in positive correlation with ${\lambda}_f$ and $r_s$. If the height of building arrays is variable, Macdonald's wind velocity model should be modified through introducing ${\sigma}_h$, because wind velocity decreases at the upper layers of the canopy and increases at the lower layers of the canopy. (3) The maximum of turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) always locates at 1.2 times as high as the buildings. TKE within the canopy decreases with increasing ${\lambda}_f$ and $r_s$ but the maximum of TKE are very close though ${\sigma}_h$ varies. (4) Wind velocity profile follows the logarithmic law approximately above the building canopy. The Zero-plane displacement $z_d$ heighten with increasing ${\lambda}_f$, whereas the maximum of and Roughness length $z_0$ occurs when ${\lambda}_f$ is about 0.14. $z_d$ and $z_0$ heighten linearly with ${\sigma}_h$ and $r_s$, If ${\sigma}_h$ is large enough, $z_d$ may become higher than the average height of buildings.
The flow characteristics of a two-dimensional offset jet issuing parallel to a rough wall is experimentally investigated by using a split film probe with the modified Stock's calibration method. The mean velocity and turbulent stresses profiles in the up and down-stream locations of the wall-attachment regions are measured and compared with those of the smooth wall attaching offset jet cases. It is found that the wall-attachment region on the rough wall is wider than on the smooth wall for the same offset height and the jet speed. The position of the maximum velocity point is farther away from the wall than that for the smooth wall case because of the thick wall boundary layer established by the surface roughness. It is concluded that the roughness of the wall accelerates the relaxation process to a redeveloped plane wall jet and produces a quite different turbulent diffusion behavior especially near the wall from comparing with the smooth plane wall jet turbulence.
This study focuses on the effect of the elasticity modulus of jig material on blade edge shape in the grinding process of a sapphire medical knife. The ELID grinding process was applied as the edge-grinding method for sapphire material. Carbon steel and copper have been selected as the hard and soft jig materials, respectively. The blade edge created by ELID grinding was measured by a surface roughness tester and optical microscope. The shape of the ground edge and surface roughness were compared using the measurement results. As a result, it was found that chipping in the blade edge of the sapphire knife occurred more than in the case of jig material with a high-elasticity modulus because of the high normal force in the grinding process. Moreover, the maximum height surface roughness, $R_{max}$,of the ground surface was higher in the case of the jig material with a high-elasticity modulus due to the difference in elasticelongation. It was considered to lead to chipping from the notch effect.

This paper reports on the friction characteristics of a piston ring pack with consideration of mixed lubrication. The analytical model is presented by using the average flow antral asperity contact model. The effect of operating condition, and design parameters on the MOFT, maximum friction force, and mean frictional power loss are investigated. Piston ring prick shows mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication characteristics. From the predicted results, it was fand that the ring tension and height of surface roughness have great influence on the frictional power losses in a ring pack. Especially, ring tension is a dominant factor for the reduction of friction loss and maintenance of oil film thickness.
This study investigated the acceleration characteristics of rock slopes when earthquakes, which have not been studied much in Korea, occur. The rock slope was modeled with a similar raw of 1/20 in consideration of the height(10m), roughness, strength, and the joint dips(20°). After the completion of the model, a shaking table tests was conducted according to the magnitude of the acceleration and the type of seismic wave. The maximum acceleration was greater in the short-period seismic wave than in the long-period seismic wave, and the maximum acceleration was larger in the small acceleration. The rock slope was close to a rigid block and a structure more vulnerable to the long period wave than to the short period wave. In the event of an earthquake smaller than the domestic earthquake-resistant maximum design acceleration(0.154g), safety management of the rock slope was required.
Infrared (IR) optic lens can be fabricated by a single point diamond turning (SPDT) machine without subsequent polishing process. However, this machining process often leaves micro-cracks that deteriorate the surface quality. In this work, we propose an experimental design to remove micro-cracks on IR lens. The proposed design gathered data between cutting process condition and Rt surface roughness. This is of great importance because the scale of micro-cracks is a few micrometer. Rt surface roughness is suitable for analyzing maximum peak height signals of the profile. The experimental results indicate that feed per revolution variable is one of the most dominant variable, affecting the generation micro-cracks on IR lens surfaces.

Micro wall is fabricated using iterative screen printing that it is able to fabricate the pattern as low cost, simple process, formation of pattern at large area on the various substrates. In the process of micro wall fabrication using screen printing, the printing result with pressure change in process and improvement of surface roughness using hydrophillic plasma treatment are included. Height of micro wall increase linearly and precision of iteration is very high. Error rate of printed pattern width is very high, but change rate of width is under 10 %. Fabricated micro pattern have minimum width $48.75{\mu}m$ and maximum height $75.45{\mu}m$ with aspect ratio 1.55.
