Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), reinforced with different contents of silica (with or without modification using silane coupling agents), was prepared by a modified sol-gel method involving hydrolyzation of tetraethoxysilane over an acid catalyst. The structures of the as-prepared samples were characterized using various techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The mechanical properties of the as-prepared samples were discussed in detail. The results revealed an increasing of the storage modulus (G') with increase in the silica content without modification. In contrast, G' decreased after modification using silane coupling agents, indicating a reduction in the silica-silica interaction and improved dispersion of silica in the SBR matrix. Both tensile stress and hardness increased with increase in the silica content (with modification) in the SBR matrix, albeit with low values compared to the samples with un-modified silica, except for the case of silica modified using (3-glycidyloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (GPTS). The latter observation can be attributed to the special structure of GPTS and the effort of oxygen atom lone-pair.

Design is an iterative, generative, and multidisciplinary process by its nature. Iteration is frequent in most of the engineering design and development projects including construction. Design iterations cause rework, and extra efforts are required to get the optimal sequence and to manage the projects. Contrary to simple design, isolation of the generative iterations in complex design systems is very difficult, but reduction in overall iterations is possible. Design depends upon the information flow within domain and also among various design disciplines and organizations. Therefore, it is suggested that managers should be aware about the crucial iterations causing rework and optimal sequence as well. In this way, managers can handle design parameters related to such iterations proactively. Numbers of techniques are available to reduce iterations for various kinds of engineering designs. In this paper, parameter based Design Structure Matrix (DSM) is chosen. To create this DSM, a survey was performed and then partitioned using a model. This paper provides an easy approach to those companies involved in or intend to be involved in "design and build projects."

In this paper, a low-power 8-point DCT structure is proposed using add and shift operations. Proposed structure adopts 4 cycles for complete 8-point DCT in order to minimize size of hardware and to enable high-speed processing. In the structure, hardware for the first cycle can be shared in the next 3 cycles since all columns in the DCT coefficient matrix are common except sign. Conventional DCT structures implemented with only add and shift operation use CSD(Canonic Signed Digit) form coefficients to reduce the number of adders. To reduce the number of adders further, we propose a new structure using common sub-expression sharing techniques. With this techniques, the proposed 8-point DCT structure achieves 19.5% adder reduction comparison to the conventional structure using only CSD coefficient form.
Superconducting tape is being developed for electrical equipment such as superconducting transformers and generators. AC loss reduction is primary concern in the development of such high-efficiency equipment. AC losses in Bi-2223 silver-sheathed tapes, both single and multi-filamentary, were investigated by means of AC magnetization techniques. The results were compared with the hysteresis loss equation based on Bean model and the eddy current loss equation. The AC loss, of the mono-filamentary tape was the hysteresis. On the contrary, the AC loss of the multi-filamentary tape was substantially dominated by the eddy current loss in the Ag matrix.

Purpose: This paper presents graphic methods and desirability function approach to determine best vibration reducing configuration for Surion helicopter. Many flight tests were executed and nine vibration levels in cockpit, cabin, and engine room were measured in each test and analyzed to find optimal configuration. Methods: Graphic analysis methods such as matrix, scatter, and box plots are used to identify better vibration-reducing flight test conditions. As an integrated measure of the performance of 9 vibration levels desirability function approach is adopted. Results: Three vibration reducing configurations are found to be proper and one configuration is recommended. Conclusion: It is expected to be helpful to adopt graphic and desirability function methods presented in this paper in developing new products or systems like helicopters. For efficient and effective flight testing of helicopters, it will be necessary to have consistently homogeneous environment for flight testing and applying design of experiments techniques and analyzing test data.
Variation is the archenemy of quality. To reduce or control the variation in a complex production unit, firstly we need to identify the location of the root cause of the variation. This paper discusses the detection of variability and the techniques used for reduction of variation for a production unit consisting of many processes. In the first part of this paper, the background of variability detection in production systems is introduced which is then followed by a weighted network corresponding to correlation matrix of all processes. Based on the network and clustering criterion of maximum spanning tree, a classification of all processes is derived. Furthermore, the variation of each process in a class is determined by residual analysis. In the last part, the use of methods of robust design for the processes with a larger variability is discussed.

Superconducting tape is being developed for electrical equipment such as superconducting transformers and generators etc. AC loss reduction is primary concerned in the development of such high-efficiency equipment. AC losses in Bi-2223 silver-sheathed tapes, both single and multi-filamentary, were investigated by means of AC magnetization techniques when longitudinal fields are applied. The experiment resultswere compared with the hysteresis loss equation based on Bean model and the eddy current loss equation. The AC loss of the mono-filamentary tape was dominated by the hysteresis. On the contrary, the AC loss of the multi-filamentary tape was substantially dominated by the eddy current loss in the silver matrix.
This paper explores new techniques that are based on a hidden-layer linear transformation for fast speaker adaptation used in deep neural networks (DNNs). Conventional methods using affine transformations are ineffective because they require a relatively large number of parameters to perform. Meanwhile, methods that employ singular-value decomposition (SVD) are utilized because they are effective at reducing adaptive parameters. However, a matrix decomposition is computationally expensive when using online services. We propose the use of an extended diagonal linear transformation method to minimize adaptation parameters without SVD to increase the performance level for tasks that require smaller degrees of adaptation. In Korean large vocabulary continuous speech recognition (LVCSR) tasks, the proposed method shows significant improvements with error-reduction rates of 8.4% and 17.1% in five and 50 conversational sentence adaptations, respectively. Compared with the adaptation methods using SVD, there is an increased recognition performance with fewer parameters.

Noise reduction is necessary to compensate for the degradation of recognition performance by various types of noises. Among many noise reduction techniques using microphone array, generalized sidelobe canceller (GSC) has been widely applied to reduce nonstationary noises. The performance of GSC is directly affected by its adaptation mode controller (AMC). That is, accurate target speech detection is essential to guarantee the sufficient noise reduction in pure noise intervals and the less distortion in target speech intervals. Thus, this paper proposes an improved AMC design technique in which the power ratio of the output of fixed beamforming to that of blocking matrix is calculated frequency bandwise and probabilistically modeled by mixture Gaussians for each class. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms conventional AMCs in receiver operating curves (ROC) and output SNRs.
Deciding on an optimal sensor placement (OSP) is a common problem encountered in many engineering applications and is also a critical issue in the construction and implementation of an effective structural health monitoring (SHM) system. The present study focuses with techniques for selecting optimal sensor locations in a sensor network designed to monitor the health condition of Dalian World Trade Building which is the tallest in the northeast of China. Since the number of degree-of-freedom (DOF) of the building structure is too large, multi-modes should be selected to describe the dynamic behavior of a structural system with sufficient accuracy to allow its health state to be determined effectively. However, it's difficult to accurately distinguish the translational and rotational modes for the flexible structures with closely spaced modes by the modal participation mass ratios. In this paper, a new method of the OSP that computing the mode shape matrix in the weak axis of structure by the simplified multi-DOF system was presented based on the equivalent rigidity parameter identification method. The initial sensor assignment was obtained by the QR-factorization of the structural mode shape matrix. Taking the maximum off-diagonal element of the modal assurance criterion (MAC) matrix as a target function, one more sensor was added each time until the maximum off-diagonal element of the MAC reaches the threshold. Considering the economic factors, the final plan of sensor placement was determined. The numerical example demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
