Based on the experimental observation, the mathematical friction model, which is an essential information for analyzing the forming process of sheet metal, is developed considering lubricant viscosity, surface roughness and hardness, punch comer radius, and punch speed. By comparing the punch load found by FEM with a proposed friction model with experimental measurement when the coated and uncoated steel sheets are formed in 2-D geometry in dry and lubricant conditions, the validity and accuracy of the developed friction model are demonstrated.

Friction between the sheet and tools is one of the important factors affecting the sheet metal forming. Therefore, the clarification of the friction is essential to improve the formability of the sheet. In order to find the effect of material property and lubricant viscosity on the frictional characteristics, tensile test, surface roughness test and friction test are performed. The results showed that friction characteristics are mainly influenced by the surface roughness and lubricant viscosity. A mathematical model of the friction is developed for calculating friction coefficient in terms of surface roughness and lubricant viscosity. The validity and accuracy of the mathematical model of the friction are verified through the experiment and FEM analysis.
The need for developing a mathematical model for pad-pivot friction in tilting pad proceeding bearings has been well-recognized, since previous experimental work about the performances of the bearings hypothesized that the friction in the bearings is closely related to their performances. Especially, the sliding friction between pad and pivot in the ball and socket type of the bearings can influence the performance of the bearing. We propose a mathematical model for pad-pivot friction in the ball and socket type, which considers the geometrics of the pad and pivot of the bearings, by assuming the sliding friction in the ball and socket bearing as Coulomb friction. By utilizing the proposed model for pad-pivot friction, we show the analysis of Reynolds equation and energy equation, which explain the thermo-hydrodynamic characteristics of tilting pad proceeding bearings, by taking into account the turbulence and inlet pressure building as well. The results of the study show that the performance of titling-pad proceeding bearings can be greatly influenced by the pad-pivot friction. In particular, we have shown that the analysis of the pad-pivot friction is useful to explain the static proceeding loci and the dynamic characteristics of the ball and socket type of the bearings. Furthermore, for a given operating condition, we can obtain various equilibrium states which satisfy the static equilibrium conditions, by considering the pad-pivot friction.
In order to find the effect of lubricant viscosity, tool geometry, forming speed, and sheet material properties on the friction in the sheet metal forming, friction tests were performed. Friction test results show that as the lubricant viscosity becomes lower, the friction coefficient is higher. When surface roughness is extremely low or high, the friction coefficient is high. The bigger die corner radii and punch speed are, the smaller is the friction coefficient. From the experimental observation, the friction model which is the mathematical expression of friction coefficient in terms of lubricant viscosity, roughness and hardness of sheet surface, punch corner radius, and punch speed is constructed. By comparing the punch load found by FEM using the proposed friction model with that obtained from the experiment in 2-D stretch forming, the validity and accuracy of the friction model are demonstrated.

Most machines lose a lot of energy due to friction. Wear due to friction also reduces performance. Therefore, it is important to reduce friction on the surface to improve energy efficiency and decrease wear. Surface texturing refers to making patterns on the surface for reducing friction. There are many surface texturing methods, such as using lasers, abrasive jet machining, and so on. Recently, mechanical manufacturing methods, such as cutting and grinding, have been highlighted. Among them, the grinding method has the advantage of making patterns in large areas quickly. Therefore, it is appropriate for surface texturing on large machines. This paper is a study on the slope change of the surface texturing pattern using grinding. Therefore, we researched the slopes of the patterns corresponding to "spindle speed and feed rate" and "curvature of workpiece surface" using a mathematical model and experiment. As a result, we made a proper mathematical model concerning our research. Therefore, using the mathematical model in this paper, we could predict the slope change of the pattern according to grinding conditions.
Modeling nonlinear friction effects is a challenging problem. In this paper, a tracking controller is proposed for a system with uncertain nonlinear friction dynamics. Instead of using a specific friction model, we assume that the friction dynamics are represented by a function, which is unknown except its being continuously differentiable and Lipschitz continuous with known Lipschitz constants. It is shown that the scheme results in friction identification and trajectory position and velocity tracking. The analysis is done using Lyapunov-based stability method.
When the friction pendulum system and shear keys work together to resist the ground motion, which inclined inputs (non 45°) to the bridge structure, the shear keys in XY direction will be sheared asynchronously, endowed the friction pendulum system with a violent curvilinear motion on the sliding surface during earthquakes. In view of this situation, firstly, this paper abandons the equivalent linearization model of friction and constructs a Spring-Coulomb friction plane isolation system with XY shear keys, and then makes a detailed mechanical analysis of the movement process of friction pendulum system, next, this paper establishes the mathematical model of structural time history response calculation by using the step-by-step integration method, finally, it compiles the corresponding computer program to realize the numerical calculation. The results show that the calculation method in this paper takes advantage of the characteristic that the friction force is always µmg, and creatively uses the "circle making method" to express the change process of the friction force and resultant force of the friction pendulum system in any calculation time step, which can effectively solve the temporal nonlinear action of the plane friction; Compared with the response obtained by the calculation method in this paper, the peak values of acceleration response and displacement response calculated by the unidirectional calculation model, which used in the traditional research of the friction pendulum system, are smaller, so the unidirectional calculation model is not safe.

In order to measure the friction coefficient used in sheet metal forming analysis, a friction tester was manufactured and friction tests were performed in various forming conditions. Based on the friction coefficients measured, a mathematical friction model was constructed in terms of lubricant viscosity, blank holding force, punch velocity and sheet roughness. In addition, the effect of the number of forming parameters in the calculation of friction coefficient on the accuracy of sheet metal forming analysis was investigated by comparing the punch loads obtained from the FEM simulation, in which the friction coefficients were determined by a few parameters with the experimental measurement.
Mechanical systems using tendon-driven actuators have been widely used for bionic robot arms because not only the tendon based actuating system enables the design of robot arm to be very efficient, but also the system is very similar to the mechanism of the human body's operation. The tendon-driven actuator, however, has a drawback caused by the friction force of the sheath. Controlling the system without considering the friction force between the sheath and the tendon could result in a failure to achieve the desired dynamic behaviors. In this study, a mathematical model was introduced to determine the friction force that is changed according to the geometrical pathway of the tendon-sheath, and the model parameters for the friction model were estimated by analyzing the data obtained from dedicated tests designed for evaluating the friction forces. Based on the results, it is possible to appropriately predict the friction force by using the information on the pathway of the tendon.
