  • Ultrasound technology can be applied in various fields including environmental, energy, and material engineering processes. In this study the effect of liquid height/volume on calorimetric energy and sonochemical oxidation was investigated as one of the basic steps for the design of water/wastereater treatment sonoreactors. The liquid height was increased from 0 to $4{\lambda}$ by $1/4{\lambda}$ and it was found that both calorimetric energy and sonochemical oxidation were significantly increased at relatively high liquid height/volume where the power density was relatively low. The sonochemiluminescence (SCL) images for the visualization of the activity of cavitation also showed that larger and more stable active zone was formed with high SCL intensity at high liquid height/volume. Therefore, it was revealed that sonoreactors for water/wasterwater treatment could be significantly effective in terms of removal efficiency and energy consumption.

  • The effectiveness of bottom ash on the mechanical and physical properties of Controlled Low-Strength Material(CLSM) is investigated in this study, CLSM is defined by the ACI Committee 229 as a cementitious material that is in a flowable state at the time of placement and having a specified compressive strength of 83 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ or less at the age of 28 days. This study was undertaken on the use of bottom ash as a fine aggregate in CLSM. Four different levels of bottom ash with fly ash contents, 25%, 50 %, 75%, 100%, are investigated. Laboratory test results conclude that inclusion of bottom ash increases the demand for mixing water in obtaining the required flow. However, the sand was reduced because it was adjusted to maintain a constant total volume. Miかe proportions were developed for producing CLSM at three 28-day strength levels: removal with tools (less than 7 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$), mechanical means (less than 20 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$), and power equipment (less than 83 kgf/cm\`). The physical and mechanical properties supports the concept that by-product bottom ash can be successfully used in CLSM.

  • Hollow mesoporous carbon nitride material with sphere shape was synthesized using polystyrene sphere as template and cyanamide as nitrogen and carbon atom sources via thermal treatment process. The process of the silica removal is not necessary because silica as template is not in use for the synthesis of hollow mesoporous carbon nitride material and any solvents are also not in use. The size of polystyrene spheres was about 170 nm. Hollow diameter and wall thickness were 82 nm and 13 nm, respectively, in hollow mesoporous carbon nitride sphere. Surface area, mesopore size and pore volume of hollow mesoporous carbon nitride material was $188m^2g^{-1}$, 3.8 nm and $0.35cm^3g^{-1}$, respectively. The wall in hollow sphere has graphitic structure. Hollow mesoporous carbon nitride material has potential applications in the area of fuel cell, catalysis, photocatalysis, electroemmision device, etc.

  • Objectives: This study evaluated the efficiency of WaveOne Primary files (Dentsply Sirona) for removing root canal fillings with 2 types of movement: reciprocating (RCP) and continuous counterclockwise rotation (CCR). Materials and Methods: Twenty mandibular incisors were prepared with a RCP instrument (25.08) and filled using the Tagger hybrid obturation technique. The teeth were retreated with a WaveOne Primary file and randomly allocated to 2 experimental retreatment groups (n = 10) according to movement type: RCP and CCR. The root canals were emptied of filling material in the first 3 steps of insertion, until reaching the working length. The timing of retreatment and procedure errors were recorded for all samples. The specimens were scanned before and after the retreatment procedure with micro-computed tomography to calculate the percentage and volume (mm3) of the residual filling material. The results were statistically evaluated using paired and independent t-tests, with a significance level set at 5%. Results: No significant difference was found in the timing of filling removal between the groups, with a mean of 322 seconds (RCP) and 327 seconds (CCR) (p < 0.05). There were 6 instrument fractures: 1 in a RCP motion file and 5 in continuous rotation files. The volumes of residual filling material were similar (9.94% for RCP and 15.94% for CCR; p > 0.05). Conclusions: The WaveOne Primary files used in retreatment performed similarly in both RCP and CCR movements. Neither movement type completely removed the obturation material, but the RCP movement provided greater safety.

  • This study investigated formaldehyde (HCHO) removal by preparing porous supports using domestic low-grade silica coated with Co-ZSM5 and Cu-ZSM5 as the catalysts. First, the sample of the raw material for the support contained 90% silica with quartz crystal phase, which was confirmed as low-grade silica. According to Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analyses, the catalysts, Co-ZSM5 and Cu-ZSM5, were successfully coated on the surface of the porous silica supports. During the removal test of HCHO using the prepared Co-ZSM5 and Cu-ZSM5 coated beads, depending on the reaction temperature, the Co-ZSM5 coated beads exhibited higher removal efficiencies (>97%) than the Cu-ZSM5 beads at 200 ℃. The higher efficiency of the Co-ZSM5 coating may be attributed to its superior surface activity properties (BET surface area and pore volume) that lead to the favorable HCHO decomposition. Therefore, Co-ZSM5 was determined to be the suitable catalyst for removing HCHO as a coating on a porous support fabricated using domestic low-grade silica.

  • This study was carried out to recommend the systematic improving practice for the effective operation of septic tank, and the evaluation of its BOD and nutrient removal efficiency depending on process, the survey of characteristics of FRP material, and the suggestion of optimum septic tank model within sewage treatment area. The average BOD concentration and BOD removal efficiency of septic tank which was carried out the cleaning periodically in 63.9 mg/L and 77.8%, shows good quality better than the septic tank which was not carried out the cleaning regularly. Maximum load of tensile, flexural and compressive strength increased in proportion to its thickness, and the contents standard 25% of glass fiber required upgrade over than 30%. Configuration and performance for the optimum of the septic tank suggests that over $0.75m^3$ of the effective total volume, adding to over $0.25m^3$ a man for more than 5 men of the treated person, retention time should be within one day. Improving plans about facility and materials quality of the septic tank have an obligation that protective wall ought to install on the concrete bottom and side faces to prevent crumble or transform from loading of the ground or upper part of the structure on the tank setting. And it is eliminated the uneffective resisting pressure and it keeps off circulate imperfect products by strengthening of the test methods such as stretching strength, pressing strength, glass fiber contents and thickness.

  • In the area of high traffic volume, such as expressway across large cities, the amount of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted into the atmosphere as air pollution can be significant since NOx gases are the major cause of smog and acid rain. Recently, the importance of NOx removal has arisen in the world. Titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$), that is one of photocatalytic reaction material, is very efficient for removing NOx. Therefore, application of $TiO_2$ concrete is a good alternative in order to remove NOx which is a main cause of air pollution. This experimental study aimed to evaluate the long-term performance of $TiO_2$ concrete such as NOx removal efficiency due to performance period and environmental resistance for application of road structures. It was found that the $TiO_2$ is reasonable applicable on the road structure because $TiO_2$ concrete has a long-term performance.

  • Low impact development (LID) facilities are established for the purpose of restoring the natural hydrologic cycle as well as the removal of pollutants from stormwater runoff. Improved efficiency of LID facilities can be obtained through the optimized interaction of their major components (i.e., plant, soil, filter media, microorganisms, etc.). Therefore, this study was performed to evaluate the performances of LID facilities in terms of runoff and pollutant reduction and also to provide an optimal maintenance method. The monitoring was conducted on four LID technologies (e.g., bioretention, small wetlands, rain garden and tree box filter). The optimal SA/CA (facility surface area / catchment area) ratio for runoff reduction greater than 40% is determined to be 1 - 5%. Since runoff reduction affects the pollutant removal efficiency in LID facilities, SA/CA ratio is derived as an important factor in designing LID facilities. The LID facilities that are found to be effective in reducing stormwater runoff are in the following order: rain garden > tree box filter > bioretention> small wetland. Meanwhile, in terms of removal of particulate matter (TSS), the effectiveness of the facilities are in the following order: rain garden > tree box filter > small wetland > bioretention; rain gardens > tree box filter > bioretention > small wetland were determined for the removal of organic matter (COD, TOC), nutrients (TN, TP) and heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn). These results can be used as an important material for the design of LID facilities in runoff volume and pollutant reduction.

  • The overall goal of this thesis is to develop a new algorithm based on the octree model for geometric and mechanistic milling operation at the same time. Most commercial machining simulators are based on the Z map model, which has several limitations in terms of achieving a high level of precision in five-axis machining simulation. Octree representation being a three-dimensional (3D) decomposition method, an octree-based algorithm is expected to be able to overcome such limitations. With the octree model, storage requirement is reduced. Moreover, recursive subdivision is processed in the boundaries, which reduces useless computations. To achieve a high level of accuracy, fast computation time and less memory consumption, the advanced octree model is suggested. By adopting the supersampling technique of computer graphics, the accuracy can be significantly improved at approximately equal computation time. The proposed algorithm can verify the NC machining process and estimate the material removal volume at the same time.

  • The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has been developing pyroprocessing technology for recycling useful resources from spent fuel since 1997. The process includes pretreatment, electroreduction, electrorefining, electrowinning, and a waste salt treatment system. This paper briefly addresses unit processes and related innovative technologies. As for the electroreduction step, a stainless steel mesh basket was applied for adaption of granules of uranium oxide. This basket was designed for ready handling and transfer of feed material. A graphite cathode was used for the continuous collection of uranium dendrite in the electrorefining system. This enhances the throughput of the electrorefiner. A particular mesh type stirrer was designed to inhibit uranium spill-over at the liquid Cd crucible. A residual actinide recovery system was also tested to recover TRU tracer. In order to reduce the waste volume, a crystallization method is employed for Cs and Sr removal. Experiments on the unit processes were tested successfully, and based on the results, engineering-scale equipment has been designed for the PRIDE (PyRoprocess Integrated inactive DEmonstration facility).
