For NIR measurements of papers normally diffuse reflectance accessories are used which can provide a large sampling area. The in-line process control FT-NIR spectrometer MATRIX-E enables the contactless measurement of paper samples of low silicone coat weights on label-stocks in a paper converting factory. For this study concentrations of silicone between 0 and 2 g/㎡ on various paper substrates were included in a quantitative method. The aim was to achieve an absolute value for the deviation from the target value of 1 g/㎡ during continuous movement of the paper with velocities around 400 m/minute. Influences from the uncoated paper type due to supplier, color, opacity, area densities, pre-coating as well as different compounds of the agent silicone were investigated and it was found that all these papers can be represented in one PLS-model. Especially the fact that silicone as an element is present in clay coated papers is of no consequence to the measurements with MATRIX-E. Moreover during in-line installations the variation of the moisture contents in the moving paper due to variable machine velocities as well as the reflecting material of the cylinder have to be considered. It is shown that the result of the in-line calibration has the same prediction ability compared to lab scale results (Root Mean Square Error of Cross-Validation RMSECV = 0.034 g/㎡).
The optical and electrical properties of $C_{22}$-Quinolinium(TCNQ) Langmuir-Blodgett films have been studied depending on the annealing temperatures. The optimal properties were investigated using UV/visible(300-800[nm]) absorption spectra and FTIR(Fourier-transformed- infrared) absorption measurements. The electrical properties were investigated in a frequency range of 10[Hz]-13[MHz]. The UV/visible absorption spectra at room temperature show that there are four characteristic peaks at 320, 380, 494 and 678[nm]. These absorption peaks decrease very rapidly above the annealing temperature of 180[.deg. C], which is due to a structural change of TCNQ. The FTIR absorption measurements strongly support the result of the UV/visible absorption spectra, because the absorption peak of TCNQ- at 2181[$cm^{-1}$ /] also decreases above 140[.deg. C]. The frequency-dependent dielectric constant shows that there is a dielectric dispersion near 1[MHz] which is due to an orientational polarization of the molecules inside the film. The overall frequency-dependent dielectric constant is higher near 80[.deg. C]. It may be due to a softness of the alkyl chains.s.
A new method and equipment for measuring the zeta potential of the external surface of hollow fiber (HF) membranes is reported. An existing commercial streaming potential analyzer in conjunction with home-made test cells was used to determine the electrokinetic surface characteristics of various HF membranes. It was shown that measurements of the external surface of HF membrane using the home-made test cells designed in this study were easy and reliable. The zeta potential values were quite accurate and reproducible. By varying the physical shape of the test cells to adjust hydrodynamics inside the test cells, several upgrade versions of home-made test cells were obtained. It was shown that the zeta potential of the external surface of HF membranes was most influenced by membrane materials as well as the way of surface modification. However, the overall surface charge of tested HF membranes were much less than that of commercial polyamide thin-film-composite (TFC) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes due to the lack of surface functional groups. For the HF membranes with the same material, the effect of pore size on the zeta potential was not significant, implying the potential of accurate zeta potential measurements for various HF membranes. The results obtained in this study are expected to be useful for better understating of electrokinetic surface characteristics of the external surface of HF membranes.
The study was designed to examinate the discrimination rate of 4 antero-posterior cephalometric measurements from Angle's malocclusion groups. The material was 246 cephalometric radiographs taken from 42 Normal occlusions, 83 Class I malocclusions, 64Class II Division I malocclusions, 57Class III malocclusions. ANB angle, APDI, AB/OP angle, and Wits appraisal as measurements of antero-posterior skeletal relationship were measured on the cephalometric radiographs and statistically analyzed by the Canonical Discriminant Function. The results of this study were as follows: 1. ANB angle, APDI, AB/OP angle, and Wits appraisal were clinically useful measurements for the evaluation of the antero-posterior skeletal relationship. 2. The rates that discriminate actual malocclusion groups were $77.45\%$ in Wits appraisal, $74.02\%$ in AB/OP angle, $71.08\%$ in ANB angle, and $70.59\%$ in APDI. 3. The discrimination rate of actual Class III malocclusion show above $93\%$, but actual Class I and Class II division I malocclusions were relatively low.

The $AgInS_{2}$ epilayers with a chalcopyrite structure grown using a hot-wall epitaxy method have been confirmed to be a high quality crystal. From the optical absorption measurements, a temperature dependence of the energy band gap on $AgInS_{2}/GaAs$ was found to be $Eg(T)=2.1365eV-(9.89{\times}10^{-3}eV)T^{2}/(2930+T)$. After the as-grown $AgInS_{2}/GaAs$ was annealed in Ag-, S-, and In-atmospheres, the origin of point defects of $AgInS_{2}/GaAs$ has been investigated by using photoluminescence measurements at 10 K. The native defects of $V_{Ag},\;V_{S},\;Ag_{int}$ and $S_{int}$ obtained from photoluminescence measurements were classified as donors or accepters. It was concluded that the heat-treatment in the S-atmosphere converted $AgInS_{2}/GaAs$ to an optical p-type. Also, it was confirmed that In in $AgInS_{2}/GaAs$ did not form the native defects because In in $AgInS_{2}$ did exist in the stable form.
A comparative study was undertaken to investigate the collapse of maxillary dental arch and palate in unilateral cleft lip and palate individuals. The material for this study consisted of 39 subjects with repaired unilateral cleft lip and palate (30 males, 9 females). The measurements of unilateral cleft lip and palate individuals were compared with the measurements of normal individuals (30 males, 30 females). All the subjects were in the mixed dentition stage and the mean age was almost the same. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. A large number of the maxillary dental arch of the unilateral cleft lip and palate individuals showed ${\Omega}$-shape, and the arch length was shorter than that of normal individuals. The intermolar width did not show significant difference between cleft group and group, but the intercanine width was mcuh smaller than that of normal individuals. 2. The palate of the unilateral cleft lip and palate subjects showed shorter and shallower form than that of normal subjects. 3. The palatal area of the unilateral cleft lip and palate subjects was smaller than that of normal subjects, and the cleft side area was much smaller than the opposing side area. 4. There was no significant sexual difference in measurements of maxillary dental arch and palate of the unilateral cleft lip and palate subjects.
The shear behavior of polymers obtained by means of devices such as capillary and cone-and-plate rheo-meters is commonly used to assess their processing performance and as a characterization tool. However, the number of instances when two polymers have the same shear properties but perform differently during certain types of processing operations (e.g. film blowing and sheet extrusion) indicate that shear properties alone may not be sufficient to characterize polymeric fluids. We begin by defining the kinematics of shear-free or extensional flow and the associated material functions. The extensional and shear behavior of three different types of polyethylene (PE) are then compared to illustrate the points that one cannot ascertain the extensional properties of polymer melts from their shear properties and, furthermore, there may not be a simple relation between properties obtained from one type of extensional flow and those of another type. The kinematics of most processing flows are extensional rather than shear in nature, and , hence, the performance of polymers during processes such as fiber spinning, film casting, film blowing, thermoforming, blow molding, and even extrusion is more readily accounted for through extensional viscosity measurements. Methods for carrying out extensional flow measurements are then reviewed including approximate methods. To illustrate the sensitivity of extensional viscosity measurements to subtle changes in the molecular architecture of PEs, results are presented for samples with a narrow molecular weight distribution but with varying numbers of long chain branches. Finally, constitutive equations which allow one to separate shear and extensional flow behavior are discussed as any attempts to simulate the subtle processing differences between two polymers will require constitutive equations of this nature.
Applications of ultrasonic tomography to concrete structures have been reported for many years. However, practical and effective application of this tool for nondestructive assessment of internal concrete condition is hampered by time consuming transducer coupling that limits the amount of ultrasonic data that can be collected. This research aims to deploy recent developments in air-coupled ultrasonic measurements of solids, described in Part 1 of this paper set, to concrete in order to image internal inclusions. Ultrasonic signals are collected from concrete samples using a fully air-coupled (contactless) test configuration. These air coupled data are compared to those collected using partial semi-contact and full-contact test configurations. Two samples are considered: a 150 mm diameter cylinder with an internal circular void and a prism with $300mm{\times}300mm$ square cross-section that contains internal damaged regions and embedded reinforcement. The heterogeneous nature of concrete material structure complicates the application and interpretation of ultrasonic measurements and imaging. Volumetric inclusions within the concrete specimens are identified in the constructed velocity tomograms, but wave scattering at internal interfaces of the concrete disrupts the images. This disruption reduces defect detection accuracy as compared with tomograms built up of data collected from homogeneous solid samples (PVC) that are described in Part 1 of this paper set. Semi-contact measurements provide some improvement in accuracy through higher signal-to-noise ratio while still allowing for reasonably rapid data collection.
The partial discharge (PD) measurement is a very effective method to assess the winding insulation condition of high-voltage machines, since most of the insulation failure processes are directly or indirectly caused by PD. On-line PD measurements, which can detect insulation defects of winding in the early stages on rotating machines in operation, have been accepted as the most important technique. The epoxy mica capacitive coupler is currently and extensively used for on-line detection of PD pulses of high-voltage rotating machines. To evaluate the feasibility of developing a capacitive coupler that is easier to manufacture at a lower cost compared to epoxy mica couplers, a 100pF capacitive coupler made of ceramic material is designed, fabricated and tested for on-line PD measurements of 23 kV electrical machines. A series of electrical tests and accelerated aging tests are performed on the ceramic coupler to evaluate the performance requirements, long-term reliability and thermal stability for in field application. The test results show that the newly developed ceramic coupler provides equal and improved performance at a lower cost compared to epoxy mica couplers, and estimated voltage life is anticipated to surpass 100 years.
An in-situ four-electrode contact resistivity probe system was designed, and field-tested in submarine sediments. Seismic survey was also performed to support and compare the results of electric survey. The probe was designed to be driven to selected depths below the seafloor using a Vibracore system. The four insulated electrodes were, spaced equidistant across the wedge, were extended beyond the probe tip to minimize effects of sediment disturbance by the wedge insertion. In-situ measurements of resistivity were recorded on board by precision electronic equipment consisting of signal generators and processors, and by temperature-monitoring systems. Overall limits of Uncertainty at respective depths below the seafloor are up to ${\pm}$10 of the measured values. Best estimates of conductivity are considered to be ${\pm}$3 percent of the reported values. Resistivity measurements were made at six sites in carbonate sediments to a maximum depth of penetration of about 5 m. Average values of conductivity range between 0.88 and 1.21 mho/m. The results show the seabed is composed of alternating layers of relatively high-conductivity material (0.8 to 1.4 mho/m) in thicknesses of more or less one meter and layers about 30 cm thick having relatively low conductivities (0.4 to 0.8 mho/m).
