To analyze several defects and residual stress in sintering of layer structure materials, multiayer materials with TZP/SUS and ZT/SUS, and bilayer materials with porcelain/alumina and porcelain/Y-TZP were fabricated by sintering method. Multilayer materials prepared by pressureless sintering show the sintering defect such as warping, splitting, cracking originated from the difference of sintering shrinkage between each layer, which could be controlled by the adjustment of number and thickness in interlayer. In tape casting, a certain pressure given during sintering relaxed the sintering defects, specially warping. The residual stress in bilayer was examined with Vickers indentation method. A small tensile stress in porcelain/alumina and a large compressive stress in porcelain/Y-TZP were generated on the porcelain interface due to the thermal expansion mismatch, which affected the strength of bilayer materials. As a consequence, the sintering defects of multilayer materials and the residual stresses of bilayer materials were dominantly influenced on material design and starting material constants.

Silicon carbide (SiC) is an attractive material for high-power, high-temperature, and high-frequency applications. So far, atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been extensively used to study the surface charges, dielectric constants and electrical potential distribution as well as topography in silicon-based device structures, whereas it has rarely been applied to SiC-based structures. In this work, the surface potential and topography distributions SiC with different doping levels were measured at a nanometer-scale resolution using a scanning kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPM) with a non-contact mode AFM. The measured results were calibrated using a Pt-coated tip and a metal defined electrical contacts of Au onto SiC. It is assumed that the atomically resolved surface potential difference does not originate from the intrinsic work function of the materials but reflects the local electron density on the surface. It was found that the work function of the Au deposited on SiC surface was higher than that of original SiC surface. The dependence of the surface potential on the doping levels in SiC, as well as the variation of surface potential with respect to the schottky barrier height has been investigated. The results confirm the concept of the work function and the barrier heights of metal/SiC structures.

Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC) technology has been used in electronic device for various functions. LTCC technology is to fire dielectric ceramic and a conductive electrode such as Ag or Cu thick film below the temperature of $900^{\circ}C$ simultaneously. The glass-ceramic has been widely used for LTCC materials due to its low sintering temperature, high mechanical properties and low dielectric constants. To obtain the high strength, addition of filler, the microstructure should have various crystals and low pores in a composite. In this study, two glass frits were mixed with different alumina size(0.5, 2, 3.7um) and sintered at the range of $850{\sim}950^{\circ}C$. The microstructure, crystal phases, thermal and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated using FE-SEM, XRD, TG-DTA, Dilatomer. When the particle size of $Al_2O_3$ filler increased, the starting temperatures for the densification of the sintered bodies, onset point of crystallization, peak crystallization temperature in the glass-ceramic composites decreased gradually. After sintered at $900^{\circ}C$, the glass frits were crystallized as $CaAl_2Si_2O_8\;and\;CaMgSi_2O_6$. The purpose of our study is to understand the relationship between the $Al_2O_3$ particle size and thermal properties in composites.
The hydrolysis reaction of sarin(GB), one of the nerve agents was studied in aqueous sodium hydroxide(NaOH) solutions to find the experimental conditions which can convert GB into the less toxic compounds. 10 wt% of GB was added into the aqueous NaOH(2.05 eq) in a small-scale jacket-attached reactor connected to a circulator. The reaction rate constants were measured at three temperatures(50, 70 and $90^{\circ}C$) and the reaction times required to degrade the material to > 99% were calculated at different temperatures. In this study, 10 wt% of GB was degraded to 99.99% in 1.2hr at $90^{\circ}C$ by the aqueous NaOH solution. The major hydrolysate of GB was isopropyl methylphosphonate.

The dewatering characteristics of the sewage sludge was investigated through the experimental observations and model simulations. The activated sludge and the anaerobically digested sludge were examined for the dewaterability evaluation within the pressure range of $0{\sim}10^6N/m^2$. Modified Buchner funnel test and compression test by the consolidometer were conducted to evaluate average specific resistance, porosity, and moisture percentage of filter cake. Shirato's technique of compression-permeability test was followed for the pressure range lower than about $10^2N/m^2$. The flocculation effects on sludge dewatering was also examined for ferric chloride and polymeric flocculant. The application of hydrated lime which can be used for flue-gas desulfurization showed improved moisture percentage, and was thought to have positive feasibility in combined system of sludge dewatering and incineration. Determined characteristic constants were applied to Tiller's cake filtration model to simulate liquid pressure distribution and porosity distribution in cake. Model simulations showed a sharp drop of the porosity close to the cake-medium interface for the highly compressible material such as the activated sludge and the anaerobically digested sludge.

When a crack meets bimaterial interface stress singularity depends on the elastic constants of the adjacent materials. In the present study we are going to describe the finite element formulation for problems with a crack to be embedded in the stiffer material$({\mu}_2/{\mu}_1)$. The cubic isoparametric singular element, represented by adequately shifting the mid-side nodes adjacent to the crack tip is constructed to enclose the crack tip. An alternative method to obtain the optimal position of the mid-side nodes of cubic isoparametric elements is presented. In addition, a proper definition for the stress intensity factors of a crack normal to bimaterial interface is provided. It is based upon near a tip displacement solutions. Models for numerical analysis are two dimensional elastic bodies with a through crack under plain strain. The results obtained are compared with the previous solutions.
In addition to lightweight and moldable characteristics, polymeric foams possess an excellent energy absorbing capability that can be utilize for a wide range of commercial applications, especially in the crashworthiness of the automobiles. The purpose of the present study is to develop experimental methodology to characterize the pressure dependent yield behavior of the energy absorbing polymeric foams. For the compression test in a triaxial stress sate, a specially designed device was placed in a hydraulic press to produce and control oil pressure. For the test material, the polyurethane foams of two different densities were used. The displacement of the specimen, the load subjected to the specimen, and oil pressure applied to the specimen were measured and controlled. Stress strain curves and yield stresses for the four different oil pressure were obtained. It was found from the present experiments that the polyurethane foams exhibited significant increases in yield stress with applied pressure or mean normal stress. Based on this observation, a yield criteria which included the effect of the stress invariant were established for the polymeric foams. The obtained experimental constants which constituted the pressure-dependent yield criterion were verified.

The influences of stress triaxiality on ductile fracture have been investigated for various specimens and structures. With respect to a transferability issue, recently, the interests on local approaches reflecting micromechanical specifics are increased again due to rapid progress of computational environments. In this paper, the applicability of the local approaches has been examined through a series of finite element analyses incorporating modified GTN and Rousselier models as well as fracture toughness tests. The ductile crack growth of nuclear carbon steels is assessed to verify the transferability among compact tension (CT) specimens with different in-plane size. At first, the basic material constants were calibrated for standard CT specimens and used to predict fracture resistance (J-R) curves of larger CT specimens. Then, the in-plane size effects were examined by comparing the numerically estimated J-R curves with the experimentally determined ones. The assessment results showed that the in-plane size effect should be considered for realistic engineering application and the damage models might be used as useful tool for ductile fracture evaluation.
The interface of zirconium oxide thin films on silicon is analyzed in detail for their potential applications in the microelectronics. The formation of an interfacial layer of ZrSi$\sub$x/O$\sub$y. with graded Zr concentration is observed by the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry analysis. The as-deposited ZrO$_2$/ZrSi$\sub$x/O$\sub$y//Si sample is thermally stable up to 880$^{\circ}C$, but is less stable compared to the ZrO$_2$/SiO$_2$/Si samples. Post-deposition annealing in oxygen or ammonia improved the thermal stability of as-deposited ZrO$_2$/ZrSi$\sub$x/O$\sub$y/Si to 925$^{\circ}C$, likely due to the oxidation/nitridation of the interface. The as-deposited film had an equivalent oxide thickness of∼13 nm with a dielectric constant of ∼21 and a leakage current of 3.2${\times}$10e-3 A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 1.5V. Upon oxygen or ammonia annealing, the formation of SiO$\sub$x/ and SiH$\sub$x/N$\sub$y/O$\sub$z/ at the interface reduced the overall dielectric constants.

In the beam pattern synthesis problem using line source, the relationship between source distribution function and beam pattern may be represented by Fourier transform pair. In this paper, a general method to synthesize the line source distribution for a desired lobe-like beam pattern is presented by developing the nonlinear inversion method based on an iterative sampling technique. This method can be applied to the synthesis of continuously distributed dielectric constants satisfying the desired inverse scattering coefficient patterns when illuminating by TE-polarized and TM-polarized plane waves to arbitrary dielectric material. Furthermore this method can also be applied to the synthesis of transmission line with arbitrary reflection coefficient patterns. Some bandstop spatial filter and dispersive transmission line filter are illustrated for generality.
