Background: Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are frequently detected in patients with advanced-stage malignant tumors and could act as a predictor of poor prognosis. However, there is a paucity of data on the relationship between CTC number and primary tumor volume in patients with lung cancer. Therefore, our study aimed to evaluate the relationship between CTC number and primary tumor volume in patients with lung adenocarcinoma. Methods: We collected blood samples from 21 patients with treatment-naive lung adenocarcinoma and 73 healthy individuals. To count CTCs, we used a CTC enrichment method based on fluid-assisted separation technology. We compared CTC numbers between lung adenocarcinoma patients and healthy individuals using propensity score matching, and performed linear regression analysis to analyze the relationship between CTC number and primary tumor volume in lung adenocarcinoma patients. Results: CTC positivity was significantly more common in lung adenocarcinoma patients than in healthy individuals (p<0.001). The median primary tumor volume in CTC-negative and CTC-positive patients was 10.0 ㎤ and 64.8 ㎤, respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the number of CTCs correlated with primary tumor volume in lung adenocarcinoma patients (β=0.903, p=0.002). Further subgroup analysis showed a correlation between CTC number and primary tumor volume in patients with distant (p=0.024) and extra-thoracic (p=0.033) metastasis (not in patients with distant metastasis). Conclusion: Our study showed that CTC numbers may be associated with primary tumor volume in lung adenocarcinomas patients, especially in those with distant metastasis.

With a view to building up a program used in conceptual design of liquid rocket engine system, a preliminary performance-based code for an integrated engine system has been developed by incorporating sub-modular programs for each essential engine component. Modular descriptions for each component were formulated mathematically with essential parameters. In the whole iterative circuits for predicting engine performance, matching conditions of mass flow rate and pressure drop through each engine component have been considered. Mass balance calculations at each inter-component boundary are found smoothly converged. All the pressure drops through engine components as a function of mass flow rate are added up to provide turbo-pump outlet condition. In this paper, the flow chart for each iterative circuit and design methodologies are presented. Resultant predictions are validated with real engine data.

Background: In the present study, metabolite profiles of ginsenosides Rk1 and Rg5 from red ginseng or red notoginseng in zebrafish were qualitatively analyzed with ultraperformance liquid chromatography/quadrupole-time-of-flight MS, and the possible metabolic were pathways proposed. Methods: After exposing to zebrafish for 24 h, we determined the metabolites of ginsenosides Rk1 and Rg5. The chromatography was accomplished on UPLC BEH C18 column using a binary gradient elution of 0.1% formic acetonitrile-0.1% formic acid water. The quasimolecular ions of compounds were analyzed in the negative mode. With reference to quasimolecular ions and MS2 spectra, by comparing with reference standards and matching the empirical molecular formula with that of known published compounds, and then the potential structures of metabolites of ginsenosides Rk1 and Rg5 were acquired. Results: Four and seven metabolites of ginsenoside Rk1 and ginsenoside Rg5, respectively, were identified in zebrafish. The mechanisms involved were further deduced to be desugarization, glucuronidation, sulfation, and dehydroxymethylation pathways. Dehydroxylation and loss of C-17 residue were also metabolic pathways of ginsenoside Rg5 in zebrafish. Conclusion: Loss of glucose at position C-3 and glucuronidation at position C-12 in zebrafish were regarded as the primary physiological processes of ginsenosides Rk1 and Rg5.

An optimal design of the gas generator for Liquid Rocket Engine (LRE) was conducted. A fuel-rich gas generator in open cycle turbopump system was designed for 10ton in thrust with RP-1/LOx propellant. The optimal design was done for maximizing specific impulse of thrust chamber with constraints of combustion temperature and for matching the power requirement of turbopump system. Design variables are total mass flow rate to gas generator, O/F ratio in gas generator, turbine injection angle, partial admission ratio, and turbine rotational speed. Results of optimal design provide length, diameter, and contraction ratio of gas generator. And the operational condition predicted by design code with resulting configuration was found to maximize the objective function and to meet the design constraints. The results of optimal design will be tested and verified with combustion experiments.
The water droplet motion and the interaction between the droplets in a PEMFC air flow channel with multiple pores, through which water emerges, is studied numerically by solving the equations governing the conservation of mass and momentum. The liquid-gas interface is tracked by a level set method which is based on a sharp-interface representation for accurately imposing the matching conditions at the interface. The method is modified to implement the contact angle conditions on the walls and pores. The dynamic interaction between the droplets growing on multiple pores while keeping the total water flow rate through pores constant is investigated by conducting the computations until the droplet motion exhibits a periodic pattern. The numerical results show that the droplet merging caused by increasing the number of pores is not effective for water removal and that the contact angle of channel wall strongly affects water management in the PEMFC air flow channel.
The droplet dynamics in a hydrophilic/hydrophobic microchannel, which is applicable to a typical proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), is studied numerically by solving the equations governing conservation of mass and momentum. The liquid-gas interface or droplet shape is determined by a level set method which is modified to treat contact angles. The matching conditions at the interface are accurately imposed by incorporating the ghost fluid approach based on a sharp-interface representation. The effects of contact angle, inlet flow velocity, droplet size and side wall on the droplet motion are investigated parametrically. Based on the numerical results, the droplet dynamics including the sliding and detachment of droplets is found to depend significantly on the contact angle. Also, a droplet removal process is demonstrated on the combination of hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces.
We have obtained high performance and low voltage driving OCB panel by reducing the critical voltage and retardation matching between liquid crystal layer and compensation films. The critical voltage in the panel has been minimized by flattening color filter layer and optimizing a rubbing process. In addition, an appropriate retardation of the film and LC layer has scanned to achieve low driving voltage and high transmission. The proto-type 17" WXGA OCB panel has demonstrated with less than 5V drive and over 80 degree for all viewing direction except for rubbing direction with over 90% of TN light efficiency.
Characteristics of reflective LCDs, which have gained a lot of notice in recent years, rely largely on optical design of circular polarizers and the quarter-wave plates, as a component. Important design includes wavelength dispersion, viewing angle, uniformity of display and matching of refractive index. Our work has contributed to improving performance of reflective LCDs by enhancing the characteristics of polymer film using stretching and optical lamination technologies. To design that offers higher contrast and wider viewing angle, we have discovered that it is necessary to control viewing angle variation of the polarizing axis in order to compensate for the viewing angle of the polarizing film as well as the optical anisotropic properties of liquid crystal. Applying this technology to circular polarizers used for reflective LCDs enables design of wide viewing angle circular polarizers. In order to realize higher contrast for reflective LCDs, it is also necessary to design other optical materials including polarizing films. For design of hybrid optical film, it is particularly necessary to reduce surface reflection and interface reflection. This paper also reports our findings concerning this topic.
Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have slow responses, so motion blurs are often perceived in fast moving scenes. To reduce this motion blur, we propose a novel method of robust motion compensated frame interpolation (MCFI) based on bidirectional motion estimation (BME) and weight-overlapped block motion compensation (WOBMC) with variable block sizes. In most MCFI methods, a static block size is used, so some block artefacts and motion blurs are observed. However, the proposed method adjusts motion block sizes and search ranges by comparing matching scores, so the precise motion vectors can be estimated in accordance with motions. In the MCFI, overlapping ranges for WOBMC are also determined by adjusted block sizes, so the accurate MCFI can be performed. In the experimental results, the proposed method strongly reduced motion blurs arisen from large motions, and yielded interpolated images with high visual performance and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR).
Blue phase shows several different reflection colors from the randomly oriented domains and crystal direction. Also there are variations in the size of domains. The domain size is dependent on the temperature gradient. With smaller cooling rate of temperature, the domain size was increased compared with rapid cooling. With injection of light of specific wavelength, we find that the diffraction patterns were occurred around the light spot in the cell of blue phase. It was supposed to be from the matching of the phase retardation and domain size. However, actually the diffraction pattern is reflecting the lattice structure in double twist of the blue phase. The lattice constant from the radius of diffraction patterns shows very similar one from the reflection spectrum, which indicates the internal lattice constant in double twist of the blues phase.
