This study was performed to investigate the influence of lateral guidance pattern and chewing pattern on masticatory muscle activity and occlusal contact pattern. Twenty-five patients with temporomandibular disorders and thirty students without temporomandibular disorders were selected for this study. Electromyographic examination and occlusal contact examination were performed simultaneously with Bio-Pak System (Bioresearch Inc.,U.S.A.) and T-Scan System(Tekscan Co., USA). The obtained results were as follows : 1. The EMG activity of masseter and anterior temporal muscle in patient group with canine guidance was higher than with non-canine guidance. but there was no significant difference (p>0.05). 2. The EMG activity of anterior temporal muscle in normal group with non-canine guidance was higher at preferred chewing side than at opposite side (p<0.05). 3. The EMG activity of masseter muscle was higher in normal group than in patient group (p<0.05). 4. The number of occlusal contact in patient group with canine guidance was higher than with non-canine guidance, but there was no significant difference (p>0.05). 5. The occlusal contact force at preferred chewing side was higher in patient group than in normal group(p<0.05).
In order to evaluate the effect of unilateral tooth clenching, the author observed a feature of producing the symptom complex related to pain and discomfort by the isometric unilateral canine biting under force of 5kg(FS) in Korean 31 adult females within normal masticatory function who were divided into the bilateral, the right and the left group according to their habitual sides of mastication, and analyzed the observed data statistically. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The duration of the isometric unilateral canine biting maintained before the occurrence of symptom complex related to pain and discomfort 66.72 seconds at right side and 39.50 seconds at left side in a group of subjects with bilateral habitual mastication. And the difference of the duration between of unilateral biting side was almost significant (P<0.05). 2. The most frequent region of occurrence of symptom complex related to pain and discomfort by the isometric unilateral canine biting was the contralateral superficial masseter muscle in a group of subjects with bilateral habitual mastication.

Purpose: The purpose of our study was to evaluate the volume of pre- and post operative masseter muscle and bite force in mandibular prognathic patients treated with SSRO with the use of the 3D CT imaging technique and occlusal force meter. Materials and methods: The study group consisted of 12 patients with mandibular prognathism (5 males and 7 females) who underwent mandibular setback surgery (BSSRO) in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Samsung medical center. Bite force was measured at pre op, post op 3, 6 and 12 months by occlusal force meter(GM10, Nagano Keiki, Japan) The preoperative CT examination of subjects was performed between one month prior to operation and one year after to operation. And muscle volume was measured. Result: As compared to preoperative measurements at 1 year postoperatively the masseter & internal pterygoid muscle volume were diminished (p<0.05) The bite force steadily recovered, so at postoperatively 6 months reached the preoperative level. And at 1 year after operation, the maximum bite force was significantly greater than preoperative levels. No significant correlation was presented between masseter muscle and bite force (p>0.05), internal pterygoid muscle and bite force (p>0.05). Conclusion: In this study, the results showed that volume and bite force of the masticatory muscles decreased significantly immediate after orthognathic surgery for mandibular set-back. However, reduction of maximum bite force disappears within 6 months after surgery.

Purpose: This study was planned to clarify a negative view of chewing gum due to the concern that continuous gum chewing might cause a change in the gonial angle and make the lower facial appearance look square. Materials and Methods: We had 25 adults (13 males and 12 females, with an average of 27.3 years) chew 6 g of gum (spearmint) evenly with both right and left posterior teeth for one hour per day for three months. We then measured their gonial angle, the inclination of occlusal plane, facial height, bone marrow density, and masticatory force before chewing, 1, 2, and 3 month after chewing to verify its significance statistically. Result: The results showed that the gonial angle increased from $122.7^{\circ}$ to $123.3^{\circ}$ (P>0.05), and thus the jaws became slightly slimmer. There was no change in the occlusal plane inclination and facial height. Meanwhile bone marrow density in the mandibular angle and ascending ramus increased from $0.285g/cm^2$ to $0.290g/cm^2$ (P<0.05), and masticatory force also increased by 0.5 kg on the right side and 0.8 kg on the left side (P<0.05). Conclusion: Continuous chewing of gum gives an appropriate exercise effect to the stomatognathic system. As chewing gum has effect on increase bone marrow density without changing the mandibular angle and facial appearance the claim that jaw bone changes to a square jaw through chewing gum is regarded to be groundless.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of oral state and health condition among elderly people. The subjects in this study were 220 senior citizens who were randomly selected from among dwellers in Eunpyeong-gu and Jongno-gu, Seoul. A survey was conducted by one-on-one interview to find out their oral state and health condition. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS 10.0 program, and variance analysis, correlation analysis and regression procedure were employed. The findings of this study were as follows: First, Regarding subjective oral health state, 52.3 percent of the elderly people, more than the half, considered their mouth to be in good health. The number of their mean remaining permanent teeth was 14.85, which was one of the indexes to indicate their objective oral state. Second, Concerning their abnormal oral health experience, 75 percent didn't feel that their masticatory force was good enough, and 55.9 percent felt pain in their teeth, 70.0 percent suffered from mouth dryness. Those fact showed that a lot of the elderly people felt there was something wrong with their oral cavity, and the unhealthy oral state made it difficult for them to eat food, as their masticatory force weakened and they couldn't get a good taste for food. Third, Those who viewed their oral cavity as healthy thought that they were in good shape, and there was a significant correlational relationship between their subjective oral and overall physical health states. Their own perception of oral state made a difference to their subjective health status, and the subjective oral health was significantly related to ADL as well, which implied that their ADL was different according to the way they looked at their own oral health status.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the peak electromyographic activity(EMG) and time intervals in firing sequence of Anterior temporalis(TA) and Masseter(MM) on clenching, the number of tender points in the head and neck muscles, the occlusal contact state on clenching, and their relationship. 78 patients with Temporomandibular Disorders(TMDs) participated and were classified into articular or muscular group by clinical signs and symptoms. BioEMG$\textregistered$ of integrated masticatory function analyzer, Biopak$\textregistered$ system(Bioresearch Inc., USA), was used to measure EMG and related items, and T- Scan$\textregistered$(Tekscan, USA), computerized occlusal analyser, was used to record occlusal contact state on maximum voluntary clenching. EMG and occlusal contact were synchronously recorded and analysed with SAS Statistical program. The results of this study were as follows : 1. In total subjects, EMG of TA was lower than that of MM in articular group but in muscular group, vice versa, As a result, the ratio TA to MM was significantly different between the two groups. no significant differece. 3. The number and force of occlusal contact were more in articular group, but there was no significant difference in Total Left-Right statistics(TLR) between the two groups. 4. In unilaterally affected subjects for muscle function, no significant difference was observed between the affected side and the contralateral side in articular group, but in muscular group, the item of the number of tender points showed significant difference. However, for occlusal contact items, contact force in articular group shows significant difference between the two sides. 5. Rate of coincidence of the first firing side of TA with affected side or preferred chewing side was higher and not different between the two groups, but no significant correlation was showed between the first firing side and the first occlusal contact side.
This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of orthognathic surgery on occlusal force. The maximum bite force was measured in 26 dentofacial deformity patients, aged 14-26(mean age 20.3) years, before surgery and at IMF removal, 3, 6, and 12months postsurgery. To grope the correlation of bite force and skeletal change after orthognathic surgery, the cephalometric headplates were measured, tabulated and statistically analyzed. The results were as follows. 1. The presurgical maximum bite force was 13.7kg in upper first molar(rt. Side 12.7kg, it. Side 14.6kg). There was remarkable difference with that of normal occlusion. 2. The recovery of bite force was very significant in according to the operation method and the duration of IMF that was 7.6kg at IMF removal, 14.2kg at 3 months, 19.7kg at 6 months. 26.1kg at 12 months postsurgery. 3. To fasten the recovery and to increase the bite force after orthognathic surgery, the long IMF time and the injury to the masticatory muscle should be avoided by the internal rigid fixation and early physical exercise. 4. The bite force was positively correlated to the changes of mandibular plane angle, the angle between platatal plane and mandibular plan, the angle between occlusal plane and mandibular plane, and negatively correlated to the changes of mandibular body length in craniofacial structure. 5. There was no correlationship between bit force and mesial inclination of tooth long axis of first molar in this subject. 6. There was no correlation between the changes of bite force and the changes of mechanical advantage of the temporal and masseter muscle.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the mechanical stress and displacement on the jaws during the simulated bilateral clenching task on the three-dimensional finite element model of the dentated skull with unilateral molar loss. For this study, the computed tomography(G.E.8800 Quick, USA) was used to scan the total length of human skull in the frontal plane at 2.0mm intervals. The fully assembled finite element model consists of the articular disc, maxilla, mandible, teeth, periodontal ligament and cranium. The FE model was used to simulate the bilateral clenching in intercuspal position. The loading condition was the force of the masseter muscle exerted on the mandible as reported by Korioth et al. degrees of freedom of the zygomatic region where the masseter muscle is attached were fixed as restraints. In order to reflect the actual action of the muscles force, the displacement of the region was attached where the muscle is connected to the temporal bone and restraint conditions were given values identical to values at the attachment region of the masticatory muscle but with the opposite direction of the reaction from when the muscle force is acted on the mandible. Although the mandible generally has higher displacement and von Mises stress than the maxilla, its mandibular corpus on the molar-loss side has a higher stress and displacement than the molar-presence side. Because the displacement and von Mises Stress was the highest on the lateral surface of mandibular corpus with molar loss, the stress level of the condyle on the molar-loss side is greater than that of the molar-presence side, which in turn caused the symphysis of the mandible to bend. In conclusion, the unilateral posterior bite collapse with molar loss under para-functional activities such as bruxism and clenching can affect the stress concentration on the condyle and mandibular corpus. It is therefore necessary to consider the biomechanical function of dento-skeleton under masticatory force while designing the occlusal scheme of restoration on alveolar bone with the posterior collapse.

BSSRO is most frequently operated among orthognathic surgery techniques for repairment of maxillofacial deformities. In case of patients with maxillofacial asymmetry accompanying mandibular protrusion who are operated by BSSRO, this study considers the recovering time for masticatory force of each tooth and Masseteric EMG and the adequate time enabling normal occlusion. The patients who are operated with BSSRO under general anesthesia in Dankook Dental Hospital, Department of OMS are selected for this study. The control group is devided into 2. 26 patients with facial asymmetry accompanying mandibular protrusion are selected for group 1 and their maximum voluntary bite force and masseteric EMG are measured. Group 2 is formed by volunteers with healthy dentition who are measured maximum bite force and masseteric EMG on both sides of the mouth. At the week of 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th, Mann-Whitney U test is carried on for statistical analysis and the result is as follows. 1. Patients with mandibular protrusion showed apparently low maximum bite force and masseteric EMG than patients with normal occlusion. 2. In comparison with control group 1, Occlusal force is regained in incisors and canines at the 9th week and in premolars and molars, 11th week and masseteric EMG is regained at 11th week. 3. Comparing to normal occlusal patients, no recovery could be found in experimental group in every parts of the mouth.
