Semi-active control of vibrations of spar type floating offshore wind turbines

  • A semi-active algorithm for edgewise vibration control of the spar-type floating offshore wind turbine (SFOWT) blades, nacelle and spar platform is developed in this paper. A tuned mass damper (TMD) is placed in each blade, in the nacelle and on the spar to control the vibrations for these components. A Short Time Fourier Transform algorithm is used for semi-active control of the TMDs. The mathematical formulation of the integrated SFOWT-TMDs system is derived by using Euler-Lagrangian equations. The theoretical model derived is a time-varying system considering the aerodynamic properties of the blade, variable mass and stiffness per unit length, gravity, the interactions among the blades, nacelle, spar, mooring system and the TMDs, the hydrodynamic effects, the restoring moment and the buoyancy force. The aerodynamic loads on the nacelle and the spar due to their coupling with the blades are also considered. The effectiveness of the semi-active TMDs is investigated in the numerical examples where the mooring cable tension, rotor speed and the blade stiffness are varying over time. Except for excessively large strokes of the nacelle TMD, the semi-active algorithm is considerably more effective than the passive one in all cases and its effectiveness is restricted by the low-frequency nature of the nacelle and the spar responses.

  • The effects of swirl chamber's diameter and length on injector's dynamic characteristics were investigated through an experimental study. A mechanical pulsator was installed in front of the manifold of a swirl injector which produces pressure oscillations in the feed line. Pressure in the manifold, liquid film thickness in the orifice and the pressure in the orifice were measured in order to understand the dynamic characteristic of the simplex swirl injector with varying geometry. A direct pressure measuring method (DPMM) was used to calculate the axial velocity of the propellant in the orifice and the mass flow rate through the orifice. These measured and calculated values were analyzed to observe the amplitude and phase differences between the input value in the manifold and the output values in the orifice. As a result, a phase-amplitude diagram was obtained which exhibits the injector's response to certain pressure fluctuation inputs. The mass flow rate was calculated by the DPMM and measured directly through the actual injection. The effect of mean manifold pressure change was insignificant with the frequency range of manifold pressure oscillation used in this experiment. Mass flow rate was measured with the variation of injector's geometries and amplitude of the mass flow rate was observed with geometry and pulsation frequency variation. It was confirmed that the swirl chamber diameter and length affect an injector's dynamic characteristics. Furthermore, the direction of geometry change for achieving dynamic stability in the injector was suggested.

Coupled hydroelastic vibrations of a liquid on flexible space structures under zero-gravity - Part I. Mechanical model

  • The coupled free vibration of flexible structures and on-board liquid in zero gravity space was analyzed, considering the spacecraft main body as a rigid mass, the flexible appendages as two elastic beams, and the on-board liquid as a "spring-mass" system. Using the Lagrangians of a rigid mass (spacecraft main body), "spring-mass" (liquid), and two beams (flexible appendages), as well as assuming symmetric motion of the system, we obtained the frequency equations of the coupled system by applying Rayleigh-Ritz method. Solving these frequency equations, which are governed by three system parameters, as an eigenvalue problem, we obtained the coupled natural frequencies and vibration modes. We define the parameter for evaluating the magnitudes of coupled motions of the added mass (liquid) and beam (appendages). It was found that when varying one system parameter, the frequency curves veer, vibration modes exchange, and the significant coupling occurs not in the region closest to the two frequency curves but in the two regions separate from that region.

  • Investigation of the mass effect on the journal traces in the clearance of engine bearing has been performed for better design of mass distribution of crank system components such as crank pin, piston, con-rod, balance weight, crank throw weight, etc. as well as for better oil reaction behaviors to the applied forces from the cylinder pressures on the bearing. In this preliminary study, crank pin traces in the engine bearing clearance are computed by varying the equivalent magnitude of crank pin mass that includes the masses of crank pin, piston, con-rod. etc.. while most previous studies regarding journal traces in the bearing clearance neglect the inertia effects of crank pin mass. Although the inertia effect of pill mass is negligibly small compared to viscous force by ${\pi}bearing$ theory, it is found that it gives a great amount of influences on the journal traces in full bearing computation $(2\pi\;bearing\;theory)$ under the dynamic loading conditions.

  • In general, the swing motion of the crane is controlled and suppressed by activating the trolley motion. In this paper, we suggest a new type of anti-sway control system of the crane. In the proposed control system, a small auxiliary mass(moving-mass) is installed on the spreader and the swing motion is controlled by moving the auxiliary mass. The actuator reaction against the auxiliary mass applies inertial control forces to the container in order to reduce the swing motion in the desired manner. In this paper, we apply the $H_{\infty}$ based control technique to the anti-sway control system design problem. And the experimental result shows that the proposed control system is useful and robust to disturbances like winds and initial sway motion.

  • The development of high performance single nanoparticle ion trap (SNIT) apparatus for studying in-situ dynamics of single nanoparticles in controlled environments is described. The performance of SNIT apparatus has been evaluated for 500 nm SiO₂particles. The mass resolution of ~100 ppm and the capability of varying the charge states independently have been demonstrated.

  • In this paper, a self-tuning optimal control algorithm is proposed to retain the optimal performance of an active suspension system, when the vehicle has some time varying parameters and parameter uncertainties. We consider a 2 DOF time-varying quarter car model which has the parameter variation of sprung mass, suspension spring constant and suspension damping constant. Instead of solving algebraic riccati equation on line, we propose a neural network approach as an alternative. The optimal feedback gains obtained from the off line computation, according to parameter variations, are used as the neural network training data. When the active suspension system is on, the parameters are identified by the recursive least square method and the trained neural network controller designer finds the proper optimal feedback gains. The simulation results are represented and discussed.

  • An analytical and experimental study of the thermal performance of axial heat pipe with axial groove is conducted to determine the optimal mass of working fluid for the maximum heat transport capacity of heat pipe with axial grooves. Generally, the mass of working fluid has been fully charged by considering only a geometrical shape of axial grooves embedded in a heat pipe. When the heat pipe is operated in a steady state, the meniscus re-cession phenomena of working fluid is occurred in the evaporator region. In this work, the optimal mass of working fluid was obtained from the axial variation of capillary pressure, the radius of curvature and wetting angle of meniscus of liquid-vapor interface. Experimental results were also obtained by varying the mass of working fluid within a heat pipe, and presented for the maximum heat transport capacity corresponding to the operating temperature and the elevation of heat pipe. Finally, the analytical results of the optimal mass of working fluid were compared with those of the experimental mass of working fluid.

Tracking control of variable stiffness hysteretic-systems using linear-parameter-varying gain-scheduled controller

  • Tracking control of systems with variable stiffness hysteresis using a gain-scheduled (GS) controller is developed in this paper. Variable stiffness hysteretic system is represented as quasi linear parameter dependent system with known bounds on parameters. Assuming that the parameters can be measured or estimated in real-time, a GS controller that ensures the performance and the stability of the closed-loop system over the entire range of parameter variation is designed. The proposed method is implemented on a spring-mass system which consists of a semi-active independently variable stiffness (SAIVS) device that exhibits hysteresis and precisely controllable stiffness change in real-time. The SAIVS system with variable stiffness hysteresis is represented as quasi linear parameter varying (LPV) system with two parameters: linear time-varying stiffness (parameter with slow variation rate) and stiffness of the friction-hysteresis (parameter with high variation rate). The proposed LPV-GS controller can accommodate both slow and fast varying parameter, which was not possible with the controllers proposed in the prior studies. Effectiveness of the proposed controller is demonstrated by comparing the results with a fixed robust $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ controller that assumes the parameter variation as an uncertainty. Superior performance of the LPV-GS over the robust $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ controller is demonstrated for varying stiffness hysteresis of SAIVS device and for different ranges of tracking displacements. The LPV-GS controller is capable of adapting to any parameter changes whereas the $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ controller is effective only when the system parameters are in the vicinity of the nominal plant parameters for which the controller is designed. The robust $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ controller becomes unstable under large parameter variations but the LPV-GS will ensure stability and guarantee the desired closed-loop performance.

  • This paper deals with the analysis of rock slope stability using the distinct element method. This method consists in analysis of the interaction of discrete block assemblage delimited by elementary joints, which permits to consider the heterogeneous, anisotropic and discontinuous features of the rock mass. In particular, we were able to show that this method, and especially the BRIG3D software, is an outstanding tool which gives informations of greatest interest in order to analyze the toppling mechanisms. We have confirmed the fundamental role of the rock mass structure with different simulations. In the case of toppling phenomena, the essential parameter is the dip of major discontinuities. It has an influence on the intensity and volume of deformations. The anisotropic and heterogeneous features of the rock mass play also an important role. It is proved by insertion of thick rock bars in the structure or varying rock block sizes in the mass. These models modified considerably the stress distribution and the deformation distribution. Finally, we have analyzed the influence of mechanical parameters such as friction angle and tangential stiffness.
