This study intended to compare the productive performance of three different layer raising systems; conventional cage (CC), barn (BR) and aviary (AV). The AV is welfare bestowed housing that allows free locomotion for birds within the BR. The BR allows bird's free locomotion inside BR but without multilevel structures. Both pullets and cockerels were housed together in both AV and BR, but only pullets in CC. Seventeen weeks old Lohmann Brown Lite (n = 800) pullets were housed in AV during this study. The same age layer pullets were simultaneously assigned to either at CC or BR to compare egg production performance with AV. The duration of experiment was 40 weeks (from 21st to 60th week). There were no remarkable differences in egg production, hen day egg production (HDEP) and average egg weight among three rearing systems. First 20 weeks (phase-1) average HDEP (%) of AV, CC, and BR were 85.9, 88.8, 87.1 and average egg weights (g) were 57.5, 59.9, and 56.9 respectively. Those of the remaining 20 weeks (phase-2) were 87.1, 87.9, 85.5 and 64.2, 63.0 62.1, respectively. Daily feed intakes (122 g, 110 g, 125 g); feed conversion ratio (2.4, 2.1, 2.5) and daily egg mass (53.9 g, 54.4 g, 52.8 g) data from AV, CC, and BR were not influenced significantly by the respective raising systems. Daily feed intake of layers in both AV (124 g) and BR (127 g) tended to be higher than that in CC (113 g) during phase-2. Overall, exterior egg quality (dirty and cracked eggs) in both phases was superior in BR compared with AV and CC, whereas CC generated intermediate results. This study indicated that the HDEP per se in AV and BR were not significantly different from that in CC. The study implied that the facility depreciation cost for AV and cost for increased feed intake in AV compared to CC are believed to be critical to evaluate the cost effectiveness of egg production in AV.
This study was conducted to determine the effect of food combinations of leguminous seeds on the nymphal development and adult fecundity of Riptortus clavatus Thunberg. Nymphal duration ranged from 20 to 28 days depending on food combinations with the shortest on the seed of soybean (Glycine max Linnaeus), soybean + kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris Linnaeus) and soybean + peanut (Archis hypogaea Linnaeus) and the longest on the seed of kidney bean. Instar duration was longer with increasing instar from 2.4 to 2.5 days in the 1st instar to 5.3 to 7.3 days in the 5th instar Accordingly, instar duration was significantly different on food combinations exception of 1 st instar Percent emergence varied from 3.5% on peanut to 65.0% on the seed of soybean + peanut. Nymphal mortality was the highest in the 1 st instar regardless of food combinations. Adult longevity was in range of 5.5 days to 11.2 days which was the shortest on the seed of kidney bean+peanut and the longest on soybean + peanut and was about 8.0 days on the other food combinations. Total number of eggs laid by female was most on soybean+peanut and was least on kidney bean + peanut. Accordingly, it can be recommended that food combination of the seed of soybean + peanut was the best and then was soybean only while other food communications of leguminous seeds was hard to use for mass rearing of R. clavatus.
To obtain the fundamental data for the mass seedling production of grunt, Hapalogenys nitens, we investigated the influence of salinity and cold water temperature on hatching and survival of eggs and growth and survival of larvae and fry. In regards to salinity, we surveyed the hatching rate and floating rate of fertilized eggs, the floating rate and survival rate of hatching larvae, and the survival and growth of fry. In respect to cold temperature, we investigated the influence of degree of daily temperature decrease, acute temperature shock, and slow temperature decreases on the survival, feeding and swimming activities of fry. In the salinity experiment, the hatching and floating rates of fertilized eggs, and the floating and survival rates of hatching larvae, were shown to be higher in seawater than in brackish water. Growth and survival of larvae and fry were not different between seawater (25~32 psu) and brackish water (5~20 psu), but were significantly lower in freshwater. In the cold-temperature test, three tests showed that rearing of fry in cold water and acutely decreasing water temperature to less than $10^{\circ}C$ reduced the survival, feeding and swimming activities of the fry. Therefore, we concluded that low salinity (less than 32 psu) could reduce the hatching rate and survival of eggs, but the growth and survival of fry were not influenced by salinity, and cold water (less than $10^{\circ}C$) decreased metabolism of grunt. During winter, we found a low-temperature limit at $8^{\circ}C$.
This study was carried out to investigate grazing of brackish water cyclopoid copepod Paracyclopina nana on four microalgae species (Tetraselmis suecica, Isochrysis galbana, Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Dunaliella tertiolecta) and different food concentrations raging from 5 to 55 ng chl a/ml. The grazing of P. nana was examined by the analysis of decreased number of microalgae and chlorophyll a content in rearing water and pigment content in the gut of P. nana. The maximum content of decreased chlorophyll a and gut pigment in P. nana varied with microalgae species and concentrations. It appeared at the food concentration 30 ng chl a/ml in T. suecica, 40 ng chl a/ml in I. galnaba and D. tertiolecta, and 45 ng chl a/ml in P. tricornutum, respectively. The grazing rate of a P. nana per hour also varied with different microalgae species and concentrations. The maximum grazing rate per hour of P. nana fed T. suecica with 39.3 ng chl a/ml was the highest with 0.63 ng chl a/h, but lowest with 0.52 ng chl a/h. From these results, it can be concluded that T. suecica is the best species among four microalgae species for the mass culture of P. nana and daily optimum food concentration of P. nana is $25{\sim}39$ ng chl a (approximately $10{\sim}15{\times}10^4$ cells).
Diamondback moth (DBM, Plutella xylostella L.) is known as the most destructive pest of cruciferous crops worldwide. As most insecticides targeted to mainly larval stage, new insecticides which have hatching-inhibitory or ovicidal activity could be more efficient to control DBM. Therefore, we developed an easy and efficient method for screening ovicidal activity of DBM eggs using aluminum foil. The aluminum foil ($4{\times}12$ cm) coated with filtered juice of chinese cabbage leave (hereinafter called oviposition foil) exposed to 300 newly-emerged adults for 24 hours inside the rearing container. The oviposition foils were replaced every 4 days consecutively after mating, but it was better to discarded over then. Oviposition foil were divided into 6 to 12 pieces depending on egg mass volume. After dipping into test solutions for 10 seconds using faucet, oviposition foil pieces were placed into common petri dish, and then investigated hatchability. The effect of methanol solvent (50%) for 10 seconds dipping on the toxicity against DBM eggs was negligible. In addition, whether covering the petri dish or not should be dependent on nature of active compounds tested. With applying the new bioassay method, methanol extracts from 50 plants were tested the ovicidal activity to DBM eggs. Among them, four plant extracts; Angelica tenuissima root, Lycium chinense root, Cnidium officinale root and Polygala tenuifolia root, showed high ovicidal activity of over 90% control efficacy, against DBM eggs.
In the present study, the fecundation and fertilization behaviors of the trumpet shell, Charonia fampas sauliae were observed from November 2003 to March 2004. Female has multiple fecundation and multiple fertilization, and the fertilization continued for two days. The fertilized female stayed with the egg mass to protect the eggs, and the fecundation was made during the fertilization. The highest survival rate of egg capsule was 60% at $15^{\circ}C$. Charonia lampas sauliae fed with Chaetoceros calcitrans, Isochysis galbana, and Pavlova lutheri. Growth and survival rates of C. lampas sauliae in the conditions of various water temperature were observed. The highest survival rate was 23% at $15^{\circ}C$ reared for 60 days. The growth was presented in the $15^{\circ}C$ group, with shell length from $408{\pm}21.52{\mu}m\;to\;625{\pm}19.76{\mu}m$ during the experiment.
In a series of feeding experiments using the newly established the first laboratory strain of a temperate photosynthetic ciliate, Mesodinium rubrum MR-MAL01, direct evidence was obtained for ingestion of the cultured M. rubrum cells by the bivalves like the Korean scallop, Chlamys farreri and Manila clam. Ruditapes phil-ippinarum. Each experimental Korean scallop and Manila clam removed up to 9,590 and 23,200 cells min-1, respectively. Small particles almost identical to the ruptured cells of MR-MAL01 culture were observed in the gut of the experimental bivalves, although no intact M. rubrum cell was found. In a 28 days rearing experiment, Isoshrysis galbana (KMCC H-2), a microalga, supported better growth of small Manila clam spat (0.46 mm in shell length) than MR-MAL01 strain. For the large Manila clam spat (0.84 mm in shell length), however. MR-MAL01 strain was a better prey item. Mass culture methods for this photosynthetic marine ciliate may be developed for use as live feed in aquaculture of the spat and broodstock of bivalve and small-mouthed fish larvae.
Two zooplankton species Brachionus rotundiformis (rotifera) and Tigriopus japonicus (copepoda; harpacticoida) were commonly used as live food organisms in the marine larval rearing centers. The combination culture method of two live food organisms (B. rotundiformis and T. japonicus) was well known as very valuable for stable and mass cultures. In this study, we investigated the effects of photoperiod exchanges on the growth and interspecific relationship in the combination culture of two species. The results showed that, photoperiod condition can change copepod (and rotifer) density under the two species combination cultures. There is 200% higher maximum rotifer density on the 24L:0D photoperiod culture condition compare to 12L:12D condition. However, maximum density of copepod is observed highest on the 0L:24D photoperiod culture condition. In addition, it's differ in the culture densities of nauplii, copepodites and female carrying eggs on the each three photoperiod types.

The black soldier fly (BSF), Hermetia illucens, is a generalist detritivore that is usually exploited for recycling environmental wastes, including food remnants. These insects can also be used to produce antibiotics for medical applications. For this purpose, flies need to be mass-reared using an automatic rearing system that generates various sounds. Insects use sound as a means of communication for mating or warning against predators. Thus, extrinsic sounds may interrupt the normal physiological processes of insects. In this study, we analyzed the physiological changes due to various sound treatments at $25^{\circ}C$ and 8:16 h (L:D) photoperiod. At 95 dB, larvae were exposed to different sound frequencies (0-5,000 Hz). The treated larvae were adversely affected by the high-frequency sounds and showed significant reduction in pupation and adult emergence. Different sound intensities (0-105 dB) at 5,000 Hz caused significant changes in the pupation and survival of the adults at 85 dB or above. Under a stress sound condition (5,000 Hz, 95 dB), the BSF larvae exhibited aberrations in the expression of genes related to the immune system and digestion. These results indicate that high-frequency sound treatments at or above 85 dB act as a stress sound to BSF development.
BACKGROUND: Globally, mulberry (Morus sp.) is exploited for feeding leaf to silkworms in order to obtain silk fiber or for animal feedstock production. Also, mulberry fruit is known to a by-product that was produced from mulberry tree after harvesting leaves for silkworm rearing, as a yield and consumption of mulberry fruit was increased, it has been fixing to a newincome crop. Mulberry leaves and fruits are used for the health benefits of human beings. Mulberry contains various bioactive components, such as alkaloids and flavonoids. Mulberry flavonoids are an important part of the diet because of their effects on human nutrition. The flavonoids in mulberry leaf and fruit of 'Suhyang'(Morus alba L.) were determined. METHODS AND RESULTS: Flavonoids for mulberry leaf and fruit of 'Suhyang' were analysed using ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detection and quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-DAD-QTOF/MS)technique. An UPLC-DAD-QTOF/MS system was used, and identification of mulberry leaves constituents was carried out on the basis of the complementary information obtained from LC spectra, MS ions, and MS/MS fragments. The mulberry leaf (16 flavonoids) and fruit (9 flavonoids) were isolated and analyzed from Suhyang using UPLC-DAD-QTOF/MS chromatogram. To the best of our knowledge, Quercetin 3-O-(6"-O-malonyl) glucoside and quercetin 3-O-rutinoside (rutin) was detected on the highest content in leaf and fruit, respectively and further research will be devoted to evaluate their biological activity. CONCLUSION: Obtaining information about the concentration of functional materials in mulberry leaves could contribute to the development and promotion of processed, functional products and offer possible industrial use of 'Suhyang', holding promises to enhance the overall profitability of sericulture.
