Mass mortality of Clostridium perfringens infection in Hanwoo (Clostridium perfringens 감염에 의한 한우 집단 폐사 증례)

  • This is a case report that 24 heads of cattle suddenly died without clinical signs in a Hanwoo farm. The cause of death was Clostridium perfringens enterotoxemia resulted from them with feeding leftover food. The clinical signs were observed just before the death; increase of heart rate, shallow and rapid respiration, amyostasia, spasm and so forth. In autopsy, blood coagulation disorder, a little abdominal inflation, hepatomegaly and different size of red spots, congestion hemorrhage and undercurrent of bloody exudation were observed in the entire parts of small and large intestines. C. perfringens were isolated from the substantive organs, and a unique fragment of 405bp C. perfringens was amplified by PCR. Therefore, this case was diagnosed as enterotoxemia caused by ${\alpha}$-toxin of C. perfringens A type.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to identify the socioeconomic factors, the health behavior factors and dietary pattern that have an influence on abdominal obesity, as measured by using the waist circumference in children and adolescents. Methods: This study used data collected from 1998, 2001, 2005 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Final sample included 3,596 subjects from 10 to 19 years old who had completed necessary health examinations, health behaviors survey, and nutrition survey. Results: 12 dietary patterns emerged from factor analysis with different factor loading. Logistic regression analysis of the factors that affect abdominal obesity showed that the education level, BMI(Body Mass Index) and dietary pattern, 'Kimchi' including Korean cabbage and radish affected the abdominal obesity in children and adolescents. Conclusions: Abdominal obesity is a risk factor for morbidity and mortality, and it is associated with chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Based on the findings, it is essential to modify dietary pattern for preventing abdominal obesity, which is a condition associated with the incidence of chronic disease in adults.

Isolation of Streptococcus parauberis from starry flounder, Platichthys stellatus Pallas (양식 강도다리, Platichthys stellatus Pallas에서 분리된 Streptococcus parauberis의 특성)

  • A disease with mass mortality characterized exophthalmia and abdominal distension by ascites occurred in farmed starry flounder, Platichthys stellatus in Pohang since October of 2007. Severe necrosis and infiltration of inflammatory cells were observed in tissue histopathological sections from liver, kidney, spleen and heart of the diseased fish. The catalase-negative and gram positive cocci with -hemolysis were isolated from moribund fish. Analysis of the API profiles and the multiplex PCR of the isolates showed that strains were identified as Streptococcus parauberis. In API profiles, S. parauberis isolated from starry flounder differed from those of olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus to the test of arginine dihydrolase, D-mannitol, D-sorbitol and α-lactose. And the strains, PH0710 and PH0711, were strongly lethal for starry flounder (LD50 ranging from 4.2×103~4.2×102 cfu/fish at 7 days after intraperitoneally inoculation). This is the first report on a S. parauberis infection in starry flounder.

Molecular and Histopathological Evidence of Mycobacteriosis in Paradise Fish Macropodus opercularis Imported into Korea

  • We report on mycobacteriosis in an imported tropical ornamental fish Macropodus opercularis commonly known as the paradise fish. Mass mortality occurred in paradise fish imported to Korea from Southeast Asia in 2008. The affected fish did not show any outward clinical signs, but enlargement of the spleen, kidneys, and liver was observed on dissection. Histopathological examination revealed numerous granulomas in the spleen, and acid-fast bacilli were observed in the centers of the granulomas. About 65% of spleen DNA samples were PCR positive using mycobacteria-specific primers targeting the 16S rRNA and hsp65 genes. The nucleotide identities of the 16S rRNA and hsp65 genes with those of Mycobacterium marinum were 99.5% and 99.4%, respectively. Although the bacterium was not cultured, the molecular diagnosis and histopathological findings were consistent with mycobacteriosis in paradise fish.

Totally Laparoscopic Total Gastrectomy Using Intracorporeally Hand-Sewn Esophagojejunostomy

  • Purpose: Laparoscopic total gastrectomy (LTG) for gastric cancer is still uncommon because of technical difficulties, especially in esophagojejunostomy (EJ). There are many reports for various laparoscopic procedures of EJ using linear or circular staplers. On the other hands, there has been no report for hand-sewn anastomosis. We report successfully performed intracorporeally hand-sewn EJ after LTG. Materials and Methods: The clinicopathologic data and short-term surgical outcomes of 6 patients who underwent totally laparoscopic total gastrectomy for upper gastric cancer from December 2010 and July 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. Results: The mean age was 66.5 years and mean body mass index (kg/$m^2$) was 24.6. All patients had medical comorbidities. The mean patient ASA score was 2.17. Among the 6 patients, previous abdominal operation was performed for 2 patients and combined operation was performed for 3 patients. The mean blood loss, operation time, and EJ anastomosis time was 130 ml, 379.7 minutes, and 81.5 minutes, respectively. The mean time to first flatus, first oral intake, and postoperative hospital stay was 3.0, 3.0, and 12.5 days, respectively. There was no 30-day mortality case. Postoperative aspiration pneumonia and multiple periventricular lacunar infarctions developed in 1 patient. There were no anastomosis-related complications and other major surgical complications. Conclusions: When the intracorporeal anastomotic technique becomes popular in LTG the intracorporeally hand-sewn EJ may be accepted as one method among the various laparoscopic procedures of EJ.

  • Perinephric abscess is an accumulation of pus in the perinephric space, the area anatomically defined between the kidney and Gerota's fascia. Gram negative organisms are the most prevalent bacterial species found in perinephric abscess. Fever, flank pain, vomiting and abdominal mass are the usual presenting complaints. But with its insidious onset, variable symptoms and rue frequency in children, perinephric abscess has been a major diagnostic problem, leading to delayed diagnosis and inappropriate treatment, which increase the rate of complication and mortality. Clinical diagnosis of perinephric abscess is difficult but must always be considered in children with a febrile septicemic illness. For appropriate treatment, early detection is very important, and either ultrasonography or computed tomography(CT) facilitates the diagnosis and establishment of treatment method. We experienced a case of left perinephric abscess treated by percutaneous drainage in a 1-year 7-month old boy. Review of literature was made briefly.

An Implementation of System for Control of Dissolved Oxygen and Temperature in the pools of Smart Fish Farm (스마트 양식장 수조 내 용존 산소 및 온도 제어를 위한 시스템 구현)

  • Dissolved oxygen, pH, and temperature are the most important factors for fish farming because they affect fish growth and mass mortality of the fish. Therefore, fish farm workers must always check all pools on the farm, but this is very difficult in reality. That's why we developed a control system for smart fish farms. This system includes a gateway, sensor gatherers, and a PC program using LabVIEW. One sensor gatherer can cover up to four pools. The sensor gatherers are connected to the gateway in the form of a bus. For the gateway, the ATmega2560 is used as the main processor for communication and the STM32F429 is used as a sub-processor for displaying LCD. For the sensor gatherer, ATmega2560 is used as the main processor for communication. MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport), RS-485, and Zigbee are used as the communication protocols in the control system. The users can control the temperature and the dissolved oxygen using the PC program. The commands are transferred from the PC program to the gateway through the MQTT protocol. When the gateway gets the commands, it transfers the commands to the appropriate sensor gatherer through RS-485 and Zigbee.

Upper eyelid Merkel cell carcinoma treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and surgical excision

  • Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare cutaneous carcinoma, featured by an aggressive clinical course and a mortality rate of 28% at 2 years. A 71-year-old female was affected by a 4.1-cm-wide locally advanced Merkel cell carcinoma of the upper eyelid, previously misdiagnosed as chalazion, with involvement of the extraocular muscles. Although the tumor showed a macroscopic spontaneous regression in size after the incisional biopsy, the mass was treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and surgical excision. Good functional and aesthetic result with preservation of the eyeball and absence of tumor recurrence were achieved at 3-year follow-up. In our experience, the combination of the inflammatory cascade due to the incisional biopsy and neoadjuvant chemotherapy led to the regression of a locally advanced large Merkel cell carcinoma of the eyelid.

The impacts of exercise on pediatric obesity

  • Over the last few decades, the rates of pediatric obesity have more than doubled regardless of sociodemographic categorization, and despite these rates plateauing in recent years there continues to be an increase in the severity of obesity in children and adolescents. This review will discuss the pediatric obesity mediated cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors such as attenuated levels of satiety and energy metabolism hormones, insulin resistance, vascular endothelial dysfunction, and arterial stiffness. Additionally, early intervention to combat pediatric obesity is critical as obesity has been suggested to track into adulthood, and these obese children and adolescents are at an increased risk of early mortality. Current suggested strategies to combat pediatric obesity are modifying diet, limiting sedentary behavior, and increasing physical activity. The effects of exercise intervention on metabolic hormones such as leptin and adiponectin, insulin sensitivity/resistance, and body fat in obese children and adolescents will be discussed along with the exercise modality, intensity, and duration. Specifically, this review will focus on the differential effects of aerobic exercise, resistance training, and combined exercise on the cardiovascular risks in pediatric obesity. This review outlines the evidence that exercise intervention is a beneficial therapeutic strategy to reduce the risk factors for CVD and the ideal exercise prescription to combat pediatric obesity should contain both muscle strengthening and aerobic components with an emphasis on fat mass reduction and long-term adherence.

The Antitermitic and Antifungal Activities and Composition of Vinegar from Durian Wood (Durio sp.)

  • Chemical characterization of vinegars obtained from Durian wood (Durio sp.) and their termicidal activity against Coptotermes curvignathus and antifungal activity against Schizophyllum commune were evaluated. The process of pyrolysis produced wood vinegars at three distinct temperature: 350℃, 400℃, and 450℃. To determine their effectiveness against fungal growth, the vinegars were tested using a Petri dish with 1.0%, 2.0%, 3.0%, and 4.0% (v/v) against S. commune. In the experiment, termicidal activities were evaluated using a no-choice test for C. curvignathus with 3.0%, 6.0%, 9.0%, and 12.0% (v/v). The wood vinegar exhibited antitermitic activity to C. curvignathus workers in the no-choice experiment; For vinegar produced at 450℃, a 6% concentration was required to achieve 100% mortality against C. curvignathus. In addition, a 12% vinegar produced at 450℃ resulted in the lowest mass loss of treated filter paper, which was 20.00%. Furthermore, all the wood vinegars exhibited antifungal activities against S. commune at concentration of 2.0%. The dominant chemical components of wood vinegar produced at temperature of 350℃, 400℃, and 450℃ were 2-methoxy-phenol, 4-ethyl-2-methoxy-phenol, 4-ethyl-2-methoxy-phenol, 3.5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxytoluene, and creosol.
