The present study has been carried out to develop a computational procedure for the analysis of the off-design performance in centrifugal compressors with vaneless diffusers by integrating empirical loss models and analytical equations. Losses in centrifugal compressors stem from a number of sources and their exact calculation is not yet possible. This study investigates several modeling schemes and shows that a fairly good prediction can be achieved by a proper selection of the most important flow parameters resulting form a meanline one-dimensional analysis. The performance maps for compressors are calculated and compared with measured performance maps. The off-design performance characteristics in terms of the pressure ratio vs. mass flow produced have generally correct forms. However, no universal means have been found to predict accurately the onset of surge. The prediction method developed through this study can serve as a tool to ensure good matching between parts and it can assist the understanding of the operational characteristics of general purpose centrifugal compressors.
The effect of pressure-side opening length on three-dimensional flow fields and aerodynamic losses downstream of a cavity squealer tip has been investigated in a turbine rotor cascade for the squealer rim height-to-chord ratio and tip gap height-tochord ratio of $h_{st}/c$ = 5.05% and h/c = 2.0% respectively. The opening length-to-camber ratio is changed to be $OL/c_c$ = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.7 The results show that longer OL leads not only to weaker secondary flow but also to lower aerodynamic loss in the tip leakage vortex region, while it significantly widens the area with high aerodynamic loss in the passage vortex region. The aerodynamic loss coefficient mass-averaged all over the measurement plane is kept almost constant for $0.0{\leq}OL/c_c{\leq}0.3$, whereas it increases rapidly for $OL/c_c$ > 0.3 in proportion to $OL/c_c$. There is little deterioration in flow turning with increasing $OL/c_c$.
Direct seeding of rice-seed pellets is expected to be an alternative for solving problems in current direct seeding cultivation of rice. but mass production of rice-seed pellets is prerequisite for practical application. Design. construction and performance evaluation of an experimental rice seed pelleting machine were carried out for mass production of rice-seed pellets. The pelleting machine intended to make a ball type rice-seed pellet, which have 3∼5 rice seeds and diameter of which is 12 mm. Pellet materials ; rice seeds, soil, and binder were mixed and kneaded by the mixer. The designed rice seed pelleting machine fed pellet materials by screw conveyor to forming rolls and made rice-seed pellets. Capacity, ratio of perfect rice-seed pellets, seed and pellet material loss were investigated as mixing ratio of soil to rice seed and feeding rate of pellet materials. The pelleting machine showed up to 37,000 pellets/h of pelleting rate, 61∼71% of weight ratio of perfect rice-seed pellets to pellet materials supplied, 17∼48% of seed loss ratio. Average weight and average diameter of the pellets were 1.66 g and 12.0 mm. respectively. More than 3 rice seeds were included in most pellets at 6 : 1 of mixing ratio of soil to rice seed. And compression strength of the pellets was in the range of 88-130 N. To improve performance of the pelleting machine, improvements of the forming rolls, feeding mechanism, and discharging mechanism for reducing loss of pellet materials and seeds damage are needed.
An experimental investigation was conducted to enhance the heat/mass transfer for impingement/effusion cooling system when the initial crossflow was formed. For the improvement of heat transfer, the circular guide is installed on the injection hole. At the fixed jet Reynolds number of 10,000, the measurements were carried out for blowing ratios ranging from 0.5 to 1.5. The local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the effusion plate are measured using a naphthalene sublimation method. The result presents that the circular guide protects the injected jet from the initial crossflow, increasing the heat/mass transfer. The heat transfer of stagnation region is hardly changed regardless of the blowing ratio. The secondary peak is obviously formed by flow transition to turbulent flow. At high blowing ratio of 1.5, the circular guide produces $26{\sim}30%$ augmentation on the averaged heat/mass transfer while the case without circular guide leads to the low and non-uniform heat/mass transfer. With the increased heat/mass transfer, the installation of circular guide is accompanied by the increase of pressure loss in the channel. However, the pressure drop caused by the circular guide is lower than that for other cooling technique with the circular pin fin.
Local heat/mass transfer and friction loss in a square duct roughened with various types of continuous and discrete rib turbulators are investigated. The combined effects of the gap flows of the discrete ribs and the secondary flows are examined for the purpose of the reduction of thermally weak regions and the promotion of the uniformity of heat/mass transfer distributions as well as the augmentation of average heat/mass transfer. The rib-to-rib pitch to the rib height ratio (p/e) of 8 and the rib angles of 90 and 60 deg are selected with $e/D_{h}=0.08$. The vortical structure of the secondary flows induced by the parallel angled arrays are quite distinct from that induced by the cross angled arrays. This distinction influences on heat/mass transfer and friction loss in all the tested cases. The gap flows of the discrete ribs reduce the strength of the secondary flows but promote local turbulence and flow mixing. As a result, the fairly uniform heat/mass transfer distributions are obtained with two row gaps.
Present study is undertaken to optimize the lubrication reliability and frictional loss of the dynamically-loaded journal bearing in hermetic reciprocating compressor with alternative refrigerant R600a application. Thermodynamic and dynamic analysis has been conducted to investigate cylinder pressure variations by substitution alternative refrigerant R600a for R12. The modeling of the dynamics of the compressor mechanism has been performed with lumped mass method. A mathematical model is developed for analyzing the dynamics of the journal bearing system with the mobility method. It takes into account the effects of the refrigerant species, aspect ratio, clearance ratio and surface roughness. A corresponding computer program is described which enables to obtain the minimum film thickness and frictional loss. Design optimization is graphically performed by parametric studies of the aspect ratio and clearance ratio.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in body weight and blood pressure and also analyze adverse events after weight loss program using Gamitaeeumjowee-tang in patients with class II or III obesity, considering for metabolic and bariatric surgery. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted on class III obesity or class II obesity patients with comorbidities, who participated in 24-week weight loss program using Gamitaeeumjowee-tang (n=54). The analysis included changes in body weight, body mass index, fat mass, skeletal muscle mass, waist-hip ratio and blood pressure before and after the program. And also calculated the proportion of patients who lost more than 5%, 10%, and 15% of their initial weight. Adverse events were assessed by causality, severity and system-organ classes. Results: After the weight loss program, body weight decreased 12.21±6.43 kg (12.77%), and BMI decreased 4.61±2.25 kg/m2 (12.75%) on average (P<0.05). The 90.7% of the subjects lost more than 5% of their weight, 68.5% lost more than 10%, and 35.1% lost more than 15% of their weight. Blood pressure significantly decreased 11.04±14.53 mmHg in systolic and 7.28±11.89 mmHg in diastolic on average (P<0.05). The 97% of adverse events were mild, and 75% were evaluated as 'unlikely' in the causality evaluation. Conclusions: The results of this study, the weight loss program using Gamitaeeumjowee-tang showed significant weight loss and blood pressure reduction in patients with class III obesity or class II obesity with comorbidities, without serious adverse events. Well-designed clinical studies are recommended for the future.
The analysis shows that the variation of maximum pressure of the cycle, rate of hear release, rate of mass burned, and combustion delay are influenced by the inlet air humidity in the spark-ignition engine. The quantitative combustion delay can be obtained from the rate of mass burned. Also, the variation of time loss and effective compression ratio with the change of inlet air humidity are dominated by the development of rate of heat release.
