Analysis of heat and mass transfer in a vertical tube absorber cooled by air (공랭형 수직원관 흡수기에서의 열 및 물질전달 해석)

  • Numerical analyses have been performed to estimate the absorption heat and mass transfer coefficients in absorption process of the LiBr aqueous solution and the total heat and mass transfer rates in a vertical tube absorber which is coolING ed by air. Axisymmetric cylindrical coordinate system was adopted to model the circular tube and the transport equations were solved by the finite volume method. Absorption behaviors of heat and mass transfer were analyzed through falling film of the LiBr aqueous solution contacted by water vapor in tube. Effects of film Reynolds number on heat and mass transfer coefficients have been also investigated. Especially, effects of tube diameter have been considered to observe the total heat and mass transfer rates through falling film along the tube. Based on the analysis it has been found that the total mass transfer rate increases rapidly in a region with low film Reynolds number(10 ~ 40) as the film Reynolds number increases, while decreases beyond that region. The total heat and mass transfer rates increase with increasing the tube diameter.

  • Recently, in the manufacturing process of flat panel displays, mass production methods of inline system has been emerged. In particular the next generation OLED display manufacturing process, horizontal inline evaporation process has been tried. It is important for the success of OLED inline evaporation process to develop a magnetic levitation transport system capable of transferring a carrier equipped with a mother glass with high accuracy without any physical contact along the rail under vacuum condition. In the case of existing wheel-based transfer system, it is not suitable for OLED evaporation process requiring high cleanliness. On the other hand, the magnetic levitation transport system has an advantage that it does not generate any dust and it is possible to achieve high-precision control because there are not non-linear factors such as friction force. In this paper, we introduce the high-precision magnetic levitation transport system, which is currently under development, for OLED evaporation process.

The Impact of Southern Ocean Thermohaline Circulation on the Antarctic Circumpolar Current Transport

  • The observed ocean barotropic circulation is not completely explained by the classical wind-driven circulation theory. Although it is believed that the thermohaline forcing plays a role in the ocean barotropic circulation to some degree, how much the thermohaline forcing contributes to the barotropic circulation is not well known. The role of thermohaline circulation driven by changes in temperature and salinity in the Southern Ocean (SO) water masses on the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) transport is investigated using a coupled ocean - atmosphere - sea ice - land surface climate system model in a Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) context. Withthe implementation of glacial boundary conditions in a coupled model, a substantial increase in the ACC transport by about 75% in 80 years of integration and 25% in the near LGM equilibrium is obtained despite of the decreases in the magnitude of wind stresses over the SO by 33% in the transient time and 20% in the near-equilibrium. This result suggests that the increase in the barotropic ACC transport is due to factors other than the wind forcing. The change in ocean thermohaline circulation in the SO seems to play a significant role in enhancing the ACC transport in association with the change in the bottom pressure torque.

Species Transport Mechanisnn and Flame Structure of Counterflow Nonpremixed Flame Perturbed by a Vortex (와동에 의해 교란된 대향류 비예혼합화염의 화학종 전달기구 및 화염구조)

  • A two-dimensional direct numerical simulation was performed to investigate the flame structure of CH$_4$/$N_2$-Air counterflow nonpremixed flame interacting with a single vortex. The detailed transport properties and a modified 16-step augmented reduced mechanism based on Miller and Bowman's detailed chemistry were adopted in this computation. The results showed that an initially flat stagnation plane, on which an axial velocity was zero, was deformed into a complex-shaped plane, and an initial stagnation point was moved far away from a vortex head when the counterflow field was perturbed by the vortex. It was noted that the movement of stagnation point could alter the species transport mechanism to the flame surface. It was also identified that the altered species transport mechanism affected the distributions of the mixture fraction and the scalar dissipation rate.

  • Mass transport behavior of C60 films on electrodes with different thicknesses has been studied by an Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance (EQCM) during electrochemical reduction-oxidation processes in the presence of water. C60 films were found to be reduced in the presence of water and they remains quite stable. In thin films, the mass on electrode decreased after a complete cycle while X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) study does not support the existence or formation of C60-epoxides during electrochemical reduction processes in the presence of water or oxygen.

Radionuclides Transport from the Hypothetical Disposal Facility in the KURT Field Condition on the Time Domain (KURT 부지 환경에 위치한 가상의 처분 시설에서 누출되는 방사성 핵종의 이동을 Time Domain에서 해석하는 방법에 관한 연구)

  • Based on the data observed and analyzed on a groundwater flow system in the KURT (KAERI Underground Research Tunnel) site, the transport of radionuclides, which were assumed to be released at the supposed position, was calculated on the time-domain. A groundwater pathway from the release position to the surface was identified by simulating the groundwater flow model with the hydrogeological characteristics measured from the field tests in the KURT site. The elapsed time when the radionuclides moved through the pathway is evaluated using TDRW (Time Domain Random Walk) method for simulating the transport on the time-domain. Some retention mechanisms, such as radioactive decay, equilibrium sorption, and matrix diffusion, as well as the advection-dispersion were selected as the factors to influence on the elapsed time. From the simulation results, the effects of the sorption and matrix diffusion, determined by the properties of the radionuclides and underground media, on the transport of the radionuclides were analyzed and a decay chain of the radionuclides was also examined. The radionuclide ratio of the mass discharge into the surface environment to the mass released from the supposed repository did not exceed $10^{-3}$, and it decreased when the matrix diffusion were considered. The method used in this study could be used in preparing the data on radionuclide transport for a safety assessment of a geological disposal facility because the method could evaluate the travel time of the radionuclides considering the transport retention mechanism.

Characteristics of Long-Range Transport of Air Pollutants due to Different Transport Patterns over Northeast Asia (동북아시아 대기오염물질의 이동 패턴에 따른 장거리 수송 특성 연구)

  • This paper investigates the physical and chemical characteristics of long-range transport (LRT) process of air pollutants by employing the MM5-CMAQ and its comparison with local emission dominant (LED) case over northeast Asia. We first classified high air pollution days into LRT and LED cases based on the synoptic meteorological variables of vorticity and geostrophic wind speed/direction at a geopotential level of over 850hPa. LRT cases are further categorized into three types of transport patterns (LRT-I-III) according to the air mass pathways from source regions. LRT-I-III are originated from northern, central, and southern China, respectively, identified by back trajectory analysis. Three LRT-I-III groups have different and unique locations of high pressure and transport pathways. The chemical characteristics showed that the simulated spatial distributions varied in terms of locations of maximum concentrations and the temporal variation of surface concentrations. The primary air pollutants such as $NO_x$, $PM_{10}$ and $SO_2$ of all of three LRT cases are well transported into Korea peninsula with different concentration levels. Of LRT cases, LRT-II has the greatest effect on air quality of Korea peninsula, followed by LRT-I and LRT-III. In comparison with LRT, the LED case shows relatively higher air pollution concentrations in general, but showed a variety of different air quality levels following the emission strength pattern. These widely varying patterns are impling the case dependent multi-directional approach for the development of indicators of long-range transport process over northeast Asia.

Spatial moment analysis of multispecies contaminant transport in porous media

  • Spatial moment analysis has been performed on the concentration of the first species in a multispecies solute transport in porous media. Finite difference numerical technique was used in obtaining the solute concentration. A constant continuous source of contaminant was injected at the inlet of the domain. Results suggest that the decaying of solute mass increases as the magnitude of mean fluid velocity increases. The dispersion coefficient is highly time dependent under decaying of solutes with a complex behavior of mixing of solutes. The solute mobility and mixing varies non-linearly with time during its initial period, while the same ceases with higher decay rates of the first species much faster.

Unsteady Flow in a Cavity Induced by An Oscillatory External Flow (외부유동에 의한 캐버티 내의 비정상 유동특성)

  • In this paper, we report the experimental results for the flow pattern and the material transport around a cavity subject to a sinusoidal external flow at the far region to ward the open side of the cavity. A tilting mechanism is used to generate a oscillatory flow inside a shallow rectangular container having a cavity at one side. The surface flow visualization is performed to obtain the unsteady behavior of vortices generated at two edges situated at the entrance of the cavity. It was found that at the period 4.5 sec., the behavior of the vortices is asymmetric, and there exists a steady residual flow in the cavity. The bottom flow patterns are also visualized. There are two regions outside of the cavity where the bottom fluid particles concentrate. The material transport in this flow model is very peculiar; fluid particles in the cavity flows outward through the passage along the walls starting from the edges, and particles in the outer region approach the cavity from the central region.

Isentropic Analysis for the Long Range Trajectories of Yellow Sands (등엔트로피 궤적에 의한 황사의 장거리 이동 경로 분석)

  • Yellow sands often occur in Korea during April and May each year, and they are believed to come from the Mongolian Gobi desert as the snow starts to melt in Spring time. Since the analysis of aerosol particulates can hardly distinguish the origin of particulates, the isentropic analysis of meteorological data is often used for the trajectories of the long range transport of yellows sand or air pollutants. The yellow sand case of April 9 $\sim$ 15, 1988, in Korea is analyzed for the identification of long range transport of yellow sands and their trajectories in East Asia, using isentropic analyses. We have tranformed the ECMWF grid data, analyzed in pressure coordinates, into the isentropic coordinates and then have traced the 286 K and 290 K air mass which started Gobi desert. The result shows the transport of yellow sands from the Gobi desert to the Korean peninsula.
