Ambivalent Reading on the Story of the Colonialism in The Piano

  • The Piano, directed by Jane Campion in 1993, became a sensational movie with a special theme focusing on gender and sexual identity, when it won Palme d'Or in the Cannes Film Festival at the same year. Most of the critics discuss the representation of Victorian sexual repression in the colonial setting. But the critical acclaim tends to view the existence of the Maori people and the colonial setting as the backdrop of the narrative, although this colonial background is constructed as a medium to accelerate the release of the repressed passion. Regarding the race issue as a compelling discourse that gets left out of "feminist" accounts, this paper analyzes The Piano, focusing on both how the story of colonialism is constituted in the film and how the film represents ambivalent images of the Maori people, the native of New Zealand.

Molecular Characterization of Apolipophorin-III in the Fall Webworm, Hyphantria cunea Drury

  • We isolated and sequenced a cDNA clone corresponding to apolipophorin-III (apoLp-III) from the fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea. The cDNA for apoLp-III codes fer a 187-residue protein (561 bp) with a predicted molecular mass of 20 kDa. The calculated isoelectric point is 8.76. Multiple alignment analysis of the amino acid sequence revealed that H. cunea apoLp-III is most similar to that of Spodoptera litura (71.5% identity), followed by that of Manduca sexta (69.7% identity). They share five amphipathic $\alpha$-helices that are proposed to play a critical role in the binding of apoLp-III to lipophorin.

The Emotional Dimensions of North Korean Politics through the Lens of Historical Institutionalism

  • This study explores the following research question to address issues linked to emotions, identity, and institutions: how has the cult (institution) of the three Kims affected North Koreans' strong sense of nationalism (emotion), which is based on their Juche ideology (identity)? This paper investigates four fundamental elements of historical institutionalism: time boundedness, path dependency, institutional changes, and the shadow of the past. First, time boundedness illustrates how culture and education have been used to build trust and loyalty in the general public to construct individual and family cults. Second, path dependence reveals how the Songbun system has resulted in strong nationalism throughout Rodongdang's institutionalization. Third, institutional changes highlight the significance of age divides, as different age groups do not always support the three Kims' cult. Finally, the shadow of the past helps us understand the primary processes for generating mass ardent nationalism in the form of powerful impulses for self-sacrifice.

탑골공원의 문화적 해석 (A Cultural Reading on Tapgol Park)

  • This study seeks to find new strategies for the development of Tapgol Park and to identify Programs to promote this development. In addition, the study specifies the purpose and meaning of these efforts by revealing social aspects not apparent in the physical form of the site, and reading how these aspects influenced the development of Tapgol Park Because the focus of the study lies in reading cultural aspects of the site which have to be understood within the context of their social circumstances, the study drew materials from mass media such as newspapers and literary magazines, which best reflect these social aspects. Interpreting the over 100 you history of Tapgol Park in a cultural context, the study found a meaningful suggestion that such a small urban place located in a city forms a cultural identity in the course of communicating with its surrounding social situations. The change in the identity of Tapgol Park has been sensitive to changing social circumstances rather than the physical structure of the space. The original function of Tapgol Park as a traditional city park has gradually changed towards strengthening social functions, much like the character of an urban plaza. In the process of change the park developed a unique culture. This park culture, however, came not from the original design but from its close interactions with social circumstances changing over time. At the same time, the change in identity seen in Tapgol Park has not been fresh formed. It can be said that the inertia came into light with the potential powers under the place over the long history having been combined into the then social circumstances. In early 2002, the park re-opened, refurbished as one of the relics of the March 1st Movement. Investigating how cultural inertias that have been developing in various forms to date will change and be maintained in this new paradigm is an important assignment for researchers.

Apergillus niger LK 유래의 Epoxide Hydrolase 클로닝 및 특성 분석 (Cloning and Molecular Characterization of Epoxide Hydrolase from Aspergillus niger LK)

  • Styrene oxide 계열의 라세믹 에폭사이드 기질에 대한 입체선택적 가수분해능이 우수한 Aspergillus nigerr계열의 생촉매를 선발하였고, A.niger LK 유래의 EHase의 기질 특이성을 분석하였다. A. niger LK의 EHase는 benzene ring에 oxirane ring이 직접 연결되어 있는 styrene oxide, p-nitrostyrene oxide 기질에 대해서는 (R)-이성질체, benzene ring과 oxirane ring사이에 ether 등의 연결 chain이 있는 기질에 대해서는 (S)-이 성질체에 대한 입체선택적 가수분해능이 우수하였다. A niger LK의 EHase 유전자를 RT-PCR 방법으로 클로닝하였고, sequencing을 통해 다른 미생물 유래의 EHase와의 sequence identity 분석 등을 통해 특성을 분석하였다. Yeast 유래의 EHase와는 32% 수준의 sequence identity를 보였으며, Agrobacterisum, Corynebacterium 등의 박테리아 유래 EHase와는 identity가 매우 낮은 특성을 보였다. E. coli 숙주에서 발현된 재조합 EHase의 활성은 라세믹 에폭사이드 기질에 대한 입체선택적 가수분해 반응을 통해 확인할 수 있었다. 클러닝된 EHase의 보다 효율적인 발현 연구가 필요하며, 이러한 재조합 EHase는 고부가가치 광학활성 에폭사이드 제조를 위한 생물전환공정 시스템의 생촉매로 응용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

  • 본 논문의 목적은 푸틴 시대의 국가 정체성의 문제를 정치 및 문화 상징의 분석을 통해 살펴보는 것뿐만 아니라, 러시아 국가 정체성 문제 진단을 위한 모델을 창조해 보이는 것이다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 19세기 전제 러시아 시기로부터 현대 포스트-소비에트 시기까지 러시아의 국가 및 문화 정체성이 어떠한 일관되고 반복적인 리듬 구조 속에서 전개되어 왔는지를 제시해 보이고 있다. 삼각형-사각형이란 역학관계 모델을 제시하면서 본 연구가 주목하는 것은 정치 및 문화 상징(물)이 사용되고 있는 구체적인 맥락과, 이것들이 간직하고 있는 정치, 문화적 함의는 무엇인지, 그리고 어떠한 논리 속에서 통시적으로 이러한 상징(물)이 사용되는지를 파악하기 위한 민속 및 허위민속의 배경이다.

Examination of the Fragmentation Behavior of Hemin and Bilin Tetrapyrroles by Electrospray Ionization and Collision-induced Dissociation

  • Bilin tetrapyrroles are metabolic products of the breakdown of porphyrins within a species. In the case of mammals, these bilins are formed by the catabolism of heme and can be utilized as either biomarkers in disease or as an indicator of human waste contamination. Although a small subset of bilin tandem mass spectrometry reports exist, limited data is available in online databases for their fragmentation. The use of fragmentation data is important for metabolomics analyses to determine the identity of compounds detected within a sample. Therefore, in this study, the fragmentation of bilins generated by positive ion mode electrospray ionization is examined by collision-induced dissociation (CID) as a function of collision energy on an FT-ICR MS. The use of the FT-ICR MS allows for high mass accuracy measurements, and thus the formulas of resultant product ions can be ascertained. Based on our observations, fragmentation behavior for hemin, biliverdin and its dimethyl ester, phycocyanobilin, bilirubin, bilirubin conjugate, mesobilirubin, urobilin, and stercobilin are discussed in the context of the molecular structure and collision energy. This report provides insight into the identification of structures within this class of molecules for untargeted analyses.

예술과 문화의 영역에 대한 재고 - 문화의 타자 키치, 아직도 예술의 적인가? (Policing the Border: Is Kitsch Still the Antagonist of Art?)

  • Despite continuous efforts to redraw the boundaries between art and culture, the conventional concept of originality has persisted in approaches to the practice of contemporary art. In the discourse of originality, various forms of lesser arts that employ the method of replication have been referred to as kitsch, or "rear-guard," the opposite of avant-garde. This categorization points to the contested issue regarding the oppositional relation between modernism and mass culture. With its easily accessible content and financial affordability, mass culture has become both an irresistible attraction and a most powerful threat to modernism. This threat has instigated a discursive system that has situated mass culture as a cultural other of modernism. Taking the marginalized category of kitsch as the area of contention, this paper examines a discursive repression of kitsch. It analyzes the conceptual framework that defends originality and autonomy in art and, conversely, degrades kitsch as an inferior and dangerous cultural category. Greenberg'S concept of kitsch as a by-product of industrialization evolved into the criticism that advocates the autonomy of art. The Frankfurt School scholars, particularly Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer, practiced comparable cultural critiques. Focusing on mass culture such as film, radio, and television, instead of art works, they critically analyzed the system of mass culture and theorized the negative implications of the ubiquitous presence of kitsch. Some critics, on the other hand, perceived the growth of mass culture as opening possibilities in cultural development. Walter Benjamin and Harold Rosenberg asserted the socio-cultural dynamics of mass culture underlining the potential for continual transformation in reality and in the subject. They acknowledged that technological advances changed the condition of creation and enabled unmediated interactions between media. By scrutinizing conflicting views on kitsch, this paper intends to reassess arts that draw "the forces of the outside."

Walter Van Beirendonck 디자인에 나타난 미학 (Design Aesthetics of Walter Van Beirendonck)

  • Walter Van Beirendonck expresses a fairy tale world of perverted sexual desire of sadism and masochism, violence, and aggressiveness that breaks from a transient one-time concept as is an essential element of fashion. This study classifies the aesthetic characteristic shown on the design of Walter Van Beirendonck and analyzes the intent of his symbolism and meaning. The attempt has a meaning in exploring a new directionality of fashion by conveying a critical message to this end, contemporary fashion breaks down boundaries with artistic genre and connects a problematic consciousness that exists in life with fashion. The results of study on the aesthetic characteristics of Walter Van Beirendonck are as follows. First, Beirendonck emphasized an interpersonal image about body by giving a question through the deconstruction of image on a perfect body into race, age, and body based on body modification. Second, fetishism appeared as a consciousness that human identity and character can be changed by connecting a fetish element of sexual identity, and sadism and masochism with fashion's imagination. Third, infantilism as an amusement expression of the form metaphorically satirized life of modern people. Fourth, makeup shown on performance or festival of an African tribe was used in the way of mixture or reuse for ethnography to obtain inspiration from ethnography. Fifth, pop art combined a popular culture code as amusement through mass production and mass media. Aesthetics of Beirendonck do not have norm and are bold in using form, color, pattern, print, and styling because Beirendonck reinterpreted critical attitudes about essential problems that human life entails into a motif of his symbolic meaning in amusement. In regards to his design aesthetics, Beirendonck expanded fashion to the scope of Gesamtkunstwerk in a consistent and continued theme combined with philosophical creativity and differentiated from other fashion designers.

대중 매체를 통해 본 골드미스의 상징성과 패션에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Symbolism and Fashion of Gold Miss From the Perspective of Mass Media)

  • Women are playing an increasing role in the society amid the increase in the age at first marriage, reduced family size, and the weakening solidarity among family members. Gold Miss is a newly coined word which reflects the change in the value of women in the wake of the individualism and pluralism amid the structural change. Gold Miss means a new X generation that is sensitive to the latest fashion and trend with high purchasing power and self-attainment goal. They do not spare any effort to invest in themselves, lead the new culture and set the cultural trend that goes beyond the simple consumption, and come into the spotlight both socially and economically. The outcome of the analysis on the Gold Miss fashion which was revealed in the mass media indicated that the fashion was the instrument to express their own images and personalities. Though they may be some difference depending on the occupation, personality, values, and others, they pursue sophisticated, intellectual, and emotional office-look that takes the trend and personality into account. In addition, they prefer business casual attire, and pursue the total fashion with perfection which uses the gorgeous bright and vivid color, daring color, accent color arrangement and accessories. The Gold Miss fashion implies the self-identity, high-end feature, and embody the symbolism of information, which the analysis on the feature and fashion of Golden Miss indicated.
