A model for predicting potentials of land erosion and deposition over a natural basin was developed based on the mass balance principle. The program was developed based on sediment mass balance principle for each cell in a GIS. Sediment yield from a cell was estimated with RUSLE. The outflow sediment from a cell was calculated by multiplying the sediment yield of the cell by the sediment delivery ratio (SDR) of the cell. The outflow sediment from the upstream cell becomes the incoming sediment of the downstream cell. Therefore the erosion and deposition potential of each cell could be determined from the sediment mass balance i.e., the difference between the incoming and outflow of sediments of each cell. The developed model was validated by comparing the predicted sediment yields for three basins with measured data.
Dam reservoirs have been reported to contribute significantly to global carbon emissions, but unlike natural lakes, there is considerable uncertainty in calculating carbon emissions due to the complex of emission pathways. In particular, the method of calculating carbon dioxide (CO2) net atmospheric flux (NAF) based on a simple gas exchange theory from sporadic data has limitations in explaining the spatiotemporal variations in the CO2 flux in stratified reservoirs. This study was aimed to analyze the spatial and temporal CO2 distribution and mass balance in Daecheong Reservoir, located in the mid-latitude monsoon climate zone, by applying a two-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model (CE-QUAL-W2). Simulation results showed that the Daecheong Reservoir is a heterotrophic system in which CO2 is supersaturated as a whole and releases CO2 to the atmosphere. Spatially, CO2 emissions were greater in the lacustrine zone than in the riverine and transition zones. In terms of time, CO2 emissions changed dynamically according to the temporal stratification structure of the reservoir and temporal variations of algae biomass. CO2 emissions were greater at night than during the day and were seasonally greatest in winter. The CO2 NAF calculated by the CE-QUAL-W2 model and the gas exchange theory showed a similar range, but there was a difference in the point of occurrence of the peak value. The findings provide useful information to improve the quantification of CO2 emissions from reservoirs. In order to reduce the uncertainty in the estimation of reservoir carbon emissions, more precise monitoring in time and space is required.

A field study was conducted during the summer time of 2002 to determine compositions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from vehicles and to develop source emission profiles that is applied to CMB model to estimate the source contribution of certain area. Source emission profile is widely used for the estimation of source contribution by the chemical mass balance model and have to be developed applicable for the target area of estimation. This study was aimed to develop source emission profile and estimation of source contribution of VOCs after application of the chemical mass balance (CMB) receptor model. After considering the emission inventory and other research results for the VOCs in Seoul, Korea, the sources like vehicle emission (tunnel), gas station (gasoline, diesel), solvent usage (painting operation, dry cleaning, graphic art), and gas fuels were selected for the major VOCs sources. Furthermore, ambient air samples were simultaneously collected from 09:00 to 11:00 for four days at eight different official air quality monitoring sites as receptors in Seoul during summer of 2001. Source samples were collected by canisters, and then about seventy volatile organic compounds were analyzed by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC/FID). Based on both the developed source profiles and the database of the receptors, CMB model was intensively applied to estimate mass contribution of VOCs sources. Examining the source profile from the vehicle, the portion of alkanes of VOCs was highest, and then the portion of aromatics such toluene, m/p-xylene were followed. In case of gas fuel. they have their own components; the content of butane, propane, ethane was higher than any other component according to the fuel usage. The average of the source apportionment on VOCs for 8 sites showed that the major sources were vehicle emission and gas fuels. The vehicle emission source was revealed as having the highest contribution with an average of 49.6%, and followed by solvent with 21.3%, gas fuel with 16.1%, gasoline with 13.1%.
In two-fluid simulations of flow boiling, the modeling of the mean bubble diameter is a key parameter in the closure relations governing the intefacial transfer of mass, momentum, and energy. Monodispersed approach proved to be insufficient to describe the significant variation in bubble size during flow boiling in a heated pipe. A population balance model (PBM) has been employed to address these shortcomings. During nucleate boiling, vapor bubbles of a certain size are formed on the heated wall, detach and migrate into the bulk flow. These bubbles then grow, shrink or disintegrate by evaporation, condensation, breakage and aggregation. In this study, a parametric analysis of the PBM aggregation and breakage models has been performed to investigate their effect on the radial distribution of the mean bubble diameter and vapor volume fraction. The simulation results are compared with the DEBORA experiments (Garnier et al., 2001). In addition, the influence of PBM parameters on the local distribution of individual bubble size groups was also studied. The results have shown that the modeling of aggregation process has the largest influence on the results and is mainly dictated by the collisions due to flow turbulence.

As the vibration loads are variable and the design criteria are more strict, in this study, the dynamic characteristics of the slab is analyzed and the and the vibration is controlled for the special peculiarity of structures. First, the procedure of dynamic analysis is developed by the finite element method and then examined by using the slab model tests. Second, in order to improve the dynamic characteristics, the effects of the number of supports, material properties, position of exciting force, added mass and dynamic balance on the dynamic behavior of reinforced concrete slabs are analysed. It is concluded that the vibration can be controlled by the change in the natural frequency of system and the use of the high-strength concrete or polymer impregnated concrete (PIC), and the dynamic characteristics can be considerably affected by the arrangement of equipments, added mass, and dynamic balance, etc.

The data set was collected on fifty-eight different days with a 24-h sampling period from October 27, 1995 through August 25, 1996. From the chemical mass balance (CMB) analysis of $PM_{2.5}$ in the Chongju area, the contributions from soil, gasoline, diesel, light and heavy oil combustion were 2.6%, 15.4%, 9.0%, 28.8% and 1.5%, respectively. Residual $NO_{3}^{-}$), residual $SO_{4}^{2-}$ and residual OC, possibly formed in the atmosphere. represented additional 8.0, 10.2, and 1.6% of the $PM_{2.5}$, respectively. Other unidentified sources constituted the remaining 22.9%. From the CMB analysis, the $PM_{2.5}$ source contribution for fall, winter, spring and summer were 92, 76.8, 77.5 and 59.2%, respectively.

Several models physically based to predict the evolution of the snowpack have been proposed. Validity of these models for hourly estimation is, however, questionable, since they have been tested only on a daily basis. A computational model to predict the amount of snowpack on an hourly basis in terms of snowload from a set of meterological measurements was developed and investigated the rapid snowmelt conditions during Fohn events in the Takada plain.
Yoon et $al.^1$ presented an approximate mathmatical model to describe ammonia removal from an experimental batch reactor system with gaseous headspace. The development of the model was initially based on assuming instantaneous equilibrium between ammonia in the aqueous and gas phases. In the model, a "saturation factor, $\beta$" was defined as a constant and used to check whether the equilibrium assumption was appropriate. The authors used the trends established by the estimated $\beta$ values to conclude that the equilibrium assumption was not valid. The authors presented valuable experimental results obtained using a carefully designed system and the model used to analyze the results accounted for the following effects: speciation of ammonia between $NH_3$ and $NH^+_4$ as a function of pH; temperature dependence of the reactions constants; and air flow rate. In this article, an alternative model based on the exact solution of the governing mass-balance differential equations was developed and used to describe ammonia removal without relying on the use of the saturation factor. The modified model was also extended to mathematically describe the pH dependence of the ammonia removal rate, in addition to accounting for the speciation of ammonia, temperature dependence of reactions constants, and air flow rate. The modified model was used to extend the analysis of the original experimental data presented by Yoon et $al.^1$ and the results matched the theory in an excellent manner.
A numerical study for simulating a swirling pulverized coal combustion in axisymmetric geometry is done here by applying the weighted sum of gray gases model (WSGGM) approach with the discrete ordinate method (DOM) to model the radiative heat transfer equation. In the radiative transfer equation, the same polynomial equation and coefficients for weighting factors as those for gas are adopted for the coal/char particles as a function of partial pressure and particle temperature. The Eulerian balance equations for mass, momentum, energy, and species mass fractions are adopted with the standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model, whereas the Lagrangian approach is used for the particulate phase for soot. The eddydissipation model is employed for the reaction rate for gaseous mixture, and the single-step first-order reaction model for the devolatilization process for coal. By comparing the numerical results with experimental ones, the models used here are confirmed and found to be one of good alternatives for simulating the combustion as well as radiative characteristics.
The complex nature of low flow mixing in natural channels has been investigated using both laboratory experiments and the numerical solution of a proposed mathematical model that is based on a set of mass balance equations describing the mixing and mass exchange mechanisms. Laboratory experiments, which involved collection of channel geometry, hydraulic, and dye dispersion test data, were conducted in a model of four pool and riffle sequences in a 49-m long tilting flume. The experimental results show that flow over the model pool-riffle sequences is highly non-uniform. Concentration-time curves are significantly skewed with long tails. Comparison between measured and predicted concentration-time curves shows good agreement in the general shape, peak concentration and time to peak. The proposed model shows significant improvement over the conventional one-dimensional dispersion model in predicting natural mixing processes in open channels under low flow conditions through pools and riffles.
