  • Based on the generalized Gaussian pdf of DCT coefficients of images, Hernandez et al. propose the ML test applied watermark decoder. For images with watermarks shaped by the visibility thresholds of DCT coefficients and the luminance masking of human visual system, they conclude that the ML test with an appropriately chosen parameter associated with the pdf of DCT coefficients outperforms the correlation based decoder. In this paper, the parameter is estimated using various methods including a novel one for watermarks shaped by the visibility thresholds of DCT coefficients and the luminance masking as Hernandez et al. did and with the contrast masking added, and its effect on performance is compared.

  • Image Enhancement is used in various applications. Among them, unsharp masking methods can improve the contrast with a simple operation. However, it has problems of noise enhancement and halo effect caused by the use of a single filter. To solve this problems, adaptive processing using multi-scale and bilinear filters is being studied. These methods are effective for improving the halo effect, but it require a lot of calculation time. In this paper, we want to simplify adaptive filtering by generating a weight map based on local brightness. This weight map enables adaptive processing that eliminates the halo effect through a single multiplication operation. Through experiments, we confirmed the suppression of the halo effect through the result image of the proposed algorithm and existing algorithm.

  • The variation of sheet resistance and the reduction of masking oxide thickness with the flow rate of nitrogen gas has been measured in Boron predeposition process with Planar Diffusion source, BN-975. At 900.deg. C, the sheet resistance varied as much as 75% when the nitrogen flow rate was changed from 0.4 liters/min to 2.0 liters/min. At 975.deg. C, however, only 12% of sheet resistance variation was observed under the same flow rate change. The reduction of masking oxide thickness at 975.deg. C for a 5 min predeposition was 600 nm when the nitrogen flow rate was 0.4 liters/min. When the flow rate incresased to 1.9 liters/min, however, only 100nm of masking oxide was consumed in a similar predeposition process.

  • Since the bitter taste of enrofloxacin apparently limit the patient compliance in the oral formulations of the antibacterial agent, the masking of the taste is essential for the improvement of the therapeutic effectiveness. Therefore, this study was carried out to examine the feasibility of taste masking of enrofloxacin by the retardation of its dissolution rate using the formation of complex between the drug and Carbopol. The complexation between Carbopol and enrofloxacin was confirmed by turbidity, UV spectrophotometry, wide angle X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry. The enrofloxacin content in the complexes was 34% (Carbo-enrofloxacin complex I) and 57% (Carbo-enrofloxacin complex II) depending on the prepara-tion method. The dissolution rate of enrofloxacin from the complex increased as the pH was reduced. The dissolution rate of enrofloxacin from the Carbo-enrofloxacin complex I was significantly lower than that of the enrofloxacin powder. Therefore, these observations suggest that Carbo-enrofloxacin complex I can be used to mask the taste of enrofloxacin.

  • This paper investigated the behaviors of combustion characteristics at part load condition with various intake charge motions induced by the port masking schemes in the CVVT (Continuously Variable valve Timing) engine. Time resolved in-cylinder and exhaust emissions were measured by the fast response HC and NOx analyzers to examine their formation mechanisms and behavior characteristics. As a result, in-cylinder HC decreased with the advanced intake valve timings but HC at the exhaust port increased due to the worse combustion stabilities. However HC reduction could be achieved by the application of the port maskings with a enhancement of the engine stability. NOx also decreased with early intake timings by internal EGR but increased with the charge motion controls which enhance the combustion behavior.

  • This paper reports a novel masking method with various mask materials for wet etching of glass. Various mask materials such as Cr/Au, Ti/Au, Polyimide and thick SU-8 photoresist were investigated for borosilicate glass (Borofloat33) etching in concentrated hydrofluoric acid (48% HF). Polyimide and thick SU-8 photoresist are not suitable as masking material due to its poor adhesion to glass surfaces. Titanium has good adhesion is suitable as the first layer to make multi-protective layers. The best protection was obtained with a combination of Ti/Au, polyimide and Ti/Au as masking material with etch depth of $350{\mu}m$ achieved.

  • A psychoacoustic model based noise shaping method which shapes the noise in the frequency domain is proposed, where its presence with a host signal will not be perceptually noticeable. The derivation of imperceptible noise levels from the masking thresholds of the signal involves a deconvolution associated with the spreading function in the psychoacoustic model, which results in an ill-conditioned problem. In this paper, the problem is formulated as a constrained optimization, and it is demonstrated that the solution provides noise shaping where the noise excitation level conforms to the masking thresholds of the signal, and thus the noises embedded in the signal will not be perceived by human ear.

  • In this paper, a novel hybrid method for multi-focus image fusion is proposed. The method combines the advantages of wavelet transform-based methods and focus-measure-based methods to achieve an improved fusion result. The input images are first decomposed into different frequency sub-bands using the discrete wavelet transform (DWT). The focus measure of each sub-band is then calculated using the Laplacian of Gaussian (LoG) operator, and the sub-band with the highest focus measure is selected as the focused sub-band. The focused sub-band is sharpened using an unsharp masking filter to preserve the details in the focused part of the image. Finally, the sharpened focused sub-bands from all input images are fused using the maximum intensity fusion method to preserve the important information from all focus images. The proposed method has been evaluated using standard multi focus image fusion datasets and has shown promising results compared to existing methods.
