Melons (Cucumis melo L.) are generally grafted onto Cucurbita rootstocks to manage soilborne pathogens such as Monosporascus root rot and v ine decline (MRR/VD) and Fusarium wilt. However, g rafting onto Cucurbita rootstocks reportedly results in the reduction of fruit quality. In this study, the resistance to MRR/VD, yield, and fruit quality of melons grafted onto melon rootstocks were evaluated under greenhouse conditions. Eight melon rootstocks (R1 to R8) were used and the inodorus melon 'Homerunstar' was used as scion. Melon rootstocks R1 to R6 were selected based on resistance to MRR/VD under greenhouse conditions. Non-grafted 'Homerunstar' and plants grafted onto squash interspecific hybrid 'Shintozwa' rootstock (Cucurbita maxima D. ${\times}$ C. moschata D.) served as controls. Grafted melons were cultivated in the greenhouse infested with Monosporascus cannonballus during two growing seasons (summer and autumn). The responses to MRR/VD, yield, and fruit quality differed depending on the rootstocks and growing season. The melons grafted onto 'Shintozwa' exhibited less severe disease symptoms and higher survival rates than non-grafted melons in both seasons. While the melon rootstocks in the summer cultivation did not increase the survival rate compared to non-grafted melons, the melon rootstocks R1 and R2 in the autumn cultivation led to higher survival rates. The melon rootstocks resistant to MRR/VD increased the percentage of marketable fruits and marketable yields. Grafting onto the melon rootstocks caused little or no reduction of fruit quality such as low calcium content, fruit softening, and vitrescence, especially in lower-temperature autumn season. Accordingly, these results suggest that grafting onto the melon rootstocks may increase the tolerance to MRR/VD and the marketable yield without a reduction of fruit quality.
To produce edible Codonopsis shoots in spring, the effect of shoot pinching times on root yield and quality of Codonopsis was evaluated during 3 years from 1992 to 1994. Shoot growth decreased by increasing picking times and one time pinching of Codonopsis shoot was optimal for seed production. In case of 3 times shoots harvest per year. yield of edible Codonopsis shoots amounted to 29.5MT/ha for 3 years. Increase of shoot picking times exerted harmful effect on root growth and decreased marketable value of harvested shoots. It was recommended from the results. One-time pinching of shoot a year for the production of marketable shoots and roots after 3-year cultivation.

The experiment was carried out to examine the effect of pinching time on growth and marketable yield of okra in rain shielding vinyl houses. Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L., 'Green sod') seedling was transplanted in May, 2013. Pinching times of okra were in each 30th, 45th, 60th day after transplanting of okra. Shoot branch and top fresh weight were significantly different between each pinching times. Top fresh weight were highest at 60th day pinching time after transplanting investigated, and were lowest at 30th day pinching time after transplanting. There was no significant difference in plant height and stem length among pinching times. According to pinching times, marketable yield and number of okra fruits were varied. Marketable yields were highest at 60th day after transplanting, whereas were lowest at 30th day after transplanting. Mineral concentrations of okra fruits were not significantly different among pinching times. Therefore pinching times 60th day after transplanting was effective to increase yield of okra fruit in rain shielding vinyl houses.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of simple hydroponic culture in cultivation of grafted cactus. The results obtained are as follows: Growth indexes of grafted cactus cultivars, such as scion diameter, fresh weight, and scion hardness were improved in simple hydroponic culture compared with soil culture regardless of cultivars. Stem rot and rate of non-graft take were lower in simple hydroponic culture than in soil culture, but no significant difference was monitored between cultivars. Time for harvesting was fast in simple hydroponic culture compared with soil culture. Marketable yield increased in simple hydroponic culture.
This study was conducted to improvement of control efficiency on clubroot disease. To improve the control efficiency on clubroot disease of chinese cabbage by chemical persistent effect, Flusulfamide DP was examined with soil mixed treatment. When Flusulfamide DP was applied, the more application times, the higher control value. The control value and marketable yield per 10a of the untreated cultivation plot after two application of Flusulfamide DP were 53.9%, 4,822kg, respectively. However, based on marketability and marketable yield, untreated cultivation plot after two application of Flusulfamide DP has been thought as economic application times compared to three times application. On the other hand, the combination of soil mixing and bed soil mixing treatment Flusulfamide DP was more effective than each treatment. The control value and marketable yield of the combination treatment was 73.3∼88.9%, 5,633∼5,770kg, those of soil mixing 66.7∼70.0%, 2,847∼3,167kg, respectively.

This experiment was conducted to possibility for leaf production of wasabi using hydroponics system. When they were grown in aeroponics and soiless culture such as saprolite and Coir, photosynthesis and transpiration rate were high and marketable yield $(leaf\;width\;11{\sim}13cm)$ showed $11.2{\sim}11.7$ of leaf number per plant and $52{\sim}53.8g$ fresh weight. In spring periods, the highest yield was 25.7 of leaf number per plant in nutrient solution of Yamasaki's solution developed in Japan in deep culture during 130 days. It showed be possibility that marketable leaves harvested one leaf every $2{\sim}4$ days though spring and fall culture periods using hydroponics controlled in environmental culture.
The object of this study was to evaluate the effects of climatic elements on potato yield and create a model for estimating the potato yield. We used 35 yield data of Sumi variety produced in mulching cultivation from 17 regions over 11 years. According to the results, some climatic elements showed significant level of correlation coefficient with marketable yield of potato. Totally 22 items of climatic elements appeared to be significant. Especially precipitation for 20 days after planting (Prec_1 & 2), relative humidity during 11~20 days after planting (RH_2), precipitation for 20 days before harvest (Prec_9 & 10), sunshine hours during 50~41 days before harvest (SH_6) and 20 days before harvest (SH_9 & 10), and days of rain during 10 days before harvest (DR_10) were highly significant in quadratic regression analysis. 22 items of predicted yield ($Y_i=aX_i{^2}+bX_i+c$) were induced from the 22 items of climatic elements (step 1). The correlations between the predicted yields and marketable yield were stepwised using SPSS, statistical program, and we selected a model (step 2), in which 4 items of independent variables ($Y_i$) were used. Subsequently the $Y_i$ were replaced with the equation in step 1, $aX_i{^2}+bX_i+c$. Finally we derived the model to predict the marketable yield of potato as below. $$Y=-336{\times}DR_-10^2+854{\times}DR_-10-0.422{\times}Prec_-9^2+43.3{\times}Prec_-9\\-0.0414{\times}RH_-2^2+46.2{\times}RH_-2-0.0102{\times}Prec_-2^2-7.00{\times}Prec_-2-10039$$.
Fifty-day-old plug seedlings of yacon (Polymnia sonchiflolia Poeppig & Endlicher) were transplanted on Mar. 23, Apr,8, Apr,23, May 8, May 23, and June 7,2002 at Jeju to evaluate the effect of transplanting date on the growth and yield of yacon in Jeju island. Delaying the transplanting until May 23 greatly decreased plant height stem height, main stem diameter and number of nodes per plant. The number of marketable tuberous roots was about 6.0 per plant with the early transplanting from March 23 to April 231 but decreased to 1.9 per plant with the latest transplanting time, June 7. The yield of marketable tuberous roots of early transplanted (March 23 to April 23) yacon was about 27 MT/ha, and was 32.4 MT/ha at April 23 transplanting, but was remarkably reduced at the three later transplantings, May 8, May 23, and June 7. Dry matter and soluble solid contents of marketable tuberous roots were 14% and 15%, respectively, regardless of transplanting date. The weight of a marketable tuberous root ranged from 153 to 183.9 g at the first three transplantings, but gyeatly reduced with delaying transplanting until May 7. The optimum transplanting date for yacon in Jeju island seems to be from mid-April to late April considering tuberous root yields, the risk of late-spring frost, and cost of seedling raising.
Storage root yield of sweetpotato was decreasing owing to continuous sweetpotato cropping, debasement of soil physical properties, increasing incidence of pest and disease. This study was conducted to evaluate the changes in physicochemical properties of the soil owing to subsoiling (subsoiling to 50 cm depth), and the effect on growth and yield of sweetpotato. The subsoiling treatments included subsoiling treated every year for two years, subsoiling in the first year, and no subsoiling control. The soil physical properties measured were bulk density, hardness, porosity, three phase. Bulk density, porosity, soild (%) of three phase were improved by subsoiling in topsoil and subsoil. Main vine length and vine yield in subsoiling soil were higher than those in no subsoiling soil, but those were not significantly different. Yield of marketable storage root in subsoiling soils treated every year for two years and treated in the first year was more increased 17% and 20% than no subsoiling soil, respectively. The number of marketable storage root per plant was also higher in subsoiling soils than no subsoiling soil, but it was not significantly different. Soluble solid contents and total free sugar contents of storage root of sweetpotato were not significantly different among the treatments. These results show that improving soil physical properties by subsoiling could promote high yield of marketable storage root in continuous sweetpotato cropping field.
This study shows how the growth of the top part of plants cultivated using the single-row strawberry method, with 12 cm plant spacing, as well as that of plants cultivated through conventional planting, is characterized by the presence of many leaves in the first flower cluster harvest. The leaf area and crown diameter were the largest in the 12 cm spacing method. The hight top fresh weight (59.2 g) was detected wen the 12 cm spacing method was used followed by conventional planting and, 9 cm and 6 cm spacing method. The K and Ca contents in the first flower cluster were the highest when the 12 cm spacing method (2.0% and 2.1%, respectively) and conventional planting, (0.42% and 0.86%, respectively) were used, and these values were significantly higher than the K and Ca contents obtained using the other two methods. The N, P, Mg, Fe, and B contents show no significant differences across the planting methods. The sugar content of the first flower cluster fruits was the highest when the 12 cm spacing method was used, while the sugar content of the fourth flower cluster fruits was highest after conventional planting. Firmness was the highest in the first, third, and fourth flower clusters after conventional planting, while no significant differences were observed for the 6 cm, 9 cm, and 12 cm spacing methods. A yield of 25 g or above during November to December was observed to be the highest when the 12 cm spacing method was used, while a yield of 10-16 g was the highest when both the 9 cm and 12 cm spacing methods werw used. The yield of products in January-April was the highest when the 12 cm spacing and conventional planting methods were used, and total product yield was also the highest for these methods. A significant portion of non-marketable products (39 g) was obtained when the conventional planting method was used.
