  • Rapid spread of intermittent renewable energy has amplified the instability and uncertainty of power systems. The Korea Power Exchange (KPX) promoted efficient management by opening the power brokerage market in 2019. By combining small-scale intermittent renewable energy with a flexible facility through the power brokerage market, the KPX aims to develop a virtual power plant system that will allow the conversion of existing intermittent renewable energy into collective power plants. However, the participation rate of renewable power owners in the power brokerage market is relatively low because other markets such as the small solar power contract market or the Korea Electric Power Corporation power purchase agreement are more profitable. In this study, we used a choice experiment to determine the attributes affecting the participation rate in the power brokerage market for 113 renewable power owners and estimate the value of the power brokerage market. According to the estimation results, a low smart meter installation cost, low profit variations, long contract periods, and few clearances increased the probability of participation. Moreover, the average value of the power brokerage market was estimated to be 2.63 million KRW per power owner.

  • After the year of 2000, the Korean government has abolished the limit on foreign investments. Foreign investments in the domestic market have been thriving since. In domestic stock market, the proportion of market value held by foreign investors reaches over 40%. There are many followers in the markets, asking about what kinds of the firm that foreign investors prefer. Prior researches show that foreign investors in the American and European markets prefer stocks of the firm which are well known and are geographically closer. In this paper, we attempt to define the financial characteristics of the firms in which foreigners invest in the Korean market. The result shows that foreign investors in the domestic market tend to prefer firms with high market value of capital and dividend yield. It also shows that foreign investors in the Korean market choose firms with high book value to market value over others, while the firms with high debt ratio and the portion of the largest stock holders are shunned. This research suggests that foreign portfolio investments in the Korean market have contributed to liquidity of stock market and changed the governance structure of domestic firms in a positive way.

It aims to explore the evidence that can be used to infer the relationship between value chains and corporate performance in the case of firms forming a value chain with other companies with the means of an equity investment or a special business relationship. Design/methodology - Non-financial corporations listed from 2011 to 2017 on the securities market of South Korea are analyzed. The data used for analysis are found for transactions with the related party by year for all the corporations of non-financial industries in the securities market. Multiple analysis attempts are conducted including the relationship between the value chain and productivity, corporate value, risk-adjusted corporate value, and mediation effects of productivity. The empirical model employs sixteen variables including the value chain index which identifies its impact on various aspects of business performances. Findings - The results of this study clearly supports the phenomenon that corporate productivity and value are enhanced when the corporation expands its value chain established with domestic related firms and overseas companies. Such a positive effect is statistically significant even after the possible risk factors that accompany the expansion of value chain were considered, and productivity plays the role as a medicating variable in the effect of the value chain on the corporation values. Originality/value - The findings of this study confirms that domestic companies' expansion of their value chain centered on the related firms overseas that helped them in terms of the maximization of their productivity and corporate values. This study shows that Korean government's policy on expanding the corporate GVC can enhance the productivity and value of firms. Specifically, I analyzed the influence of basic value satisfaction, the mediating effect of service quality evaluation, and the moderated mediation effect of Bargain-proneness. Research design, data, and methodology - Data collection for this study was conducted for adults over 18 years of age with shopping experiences in traditional market within a month around the traditional market in the metropolitan area. A total of 250 questionnaire response data was obtained. Hypotheses were tested using SPSS. The PROCESS macro method was used to verify the mediating effect of the service quality evaluation on the relationship between basic value satisfaction and customer loyalty. Hierarchical regression analysis was performed to analyze the moderated mediation effect of the bargain-proneness tendency. Results - Empirical results showed that the basic value satisfaction affected service quality evaluation and customer loyalty. Specifically, it has been found that it directly affects customer loyalty and indirectly influences through service quality evaluation. The moderated mediation effect of the bargain-proneness tendency in the process of basic value satisfaction affecting customer loyalty through service quality evaluation has been verified. In other words, the higher the bargain-proneness tendency, the more influence the basic value satisfaction has on the favorable service quality evaluation. Conclusions - This study contributed to the distribution literature in that it attempted a new empirical study considering the variable 'bargain-proneness tendency', which had not received much academic attention in the past. Furthermore, this study contributed academically in that it presented important moderating variables that should be paid attention in the field of distribution studies. In this study, bargain-proneness was used with a focus on traditional markets, but this variable could play an significant role in future offline distribution studies that should pay attention to meet hedonic needs of shopping. These results suggested that traditional market practitioners should focus on the basic value and that the bargain-prone consumer segment should be considered as a target.

  • NASA's remote sensing market analysis and forecast projects 3.3 billion dollars in 2005. On the other hand, a market research firm expected that world commercial remote sensing imagery, GIS software, Data, and value-added services will generate 8.3 billion dollar in 2007. It has been widely believed that geo-spatial information and service market is growing rapidly and has a huge potential, but it is not clearly understood where it is now and will be heading in the future. Also, it could be a significant question to answer where the industry in Korea fits the best in the world business trends and where it should be strategically heading to take a large market share. Furthermore, if it could be worth being considered as a Korean strategic industry for the future. Instead of pursuing direct answers to the questions, the author will start reviewing general business practices, major business transactions such as merging and acquisitions (M&A's) and initial public offerings (IPO's), and research on market capitalization and revenue of major companies. Throughout the study, a list of common grounds in the market was uncovered and realized as follows: (1) value-added data matters in geo-spatial information and service market; (2) private sector grows faster; (3) characteristics of multi-national industry; and (4) Dependency on major industry. Based on the findings, the author presents a list of recommendations as conclusions.

  • This study examines the nominal price anomaly in the Vietnamese stock market, that is, whether stocks with low nominal price outperform stocks with high nominal price. Using a sample of all 351 companies listed on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HOSE) from June 2009 to March 2018, we confirm our hypothesis and document that cheaper stocks yield higher subsequent abnormal returns. The results are robust after controlling for various stock characteristics that have been documented to be value-relevant in prior literature, including firm size, book-to-market ratio, intermediate-term momentum, short-term reversal, skewness, market risk, idiosyncratic risk, illiquidity and extreme daily returns, using both the portfolio analysis and the Fama-MacBeth cross-sectional regression. The negative effect persists in the long term (i.e., after up to 12 months), implying a slow adjustment of stock prices to their intrinsic value. Further analysis show that the observed nominal price anomaly is mainly driven by mispricing but not a latent risk factor proxied by stock price, thus the observed anomaly reflects a mispricing but not a fundamental risk. The study highlights the irrational behaviour of investors and market inefficiency in the Vietnamese stock market and provides important implication for investors in the market.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine a financial distress premium in the emerging market. A risk-return trade-off of negative book equity (NBE) and distress firms is empirically analyzed using data from the Stock Exchange of Thailand. This research employs Ohlson's (1980) bankruptcy model as a measurement of distress risk. The results indicate that distress firms outperform solvent firms in the Thai market and deny distress anomaly often found in the developed market. Fama-Frech (1993) three-factor model and Carhart (1997) four-factor model verify the existence of a distress premium in the Thai capital market. Risk-seeking investors demand greater compensation for bearing risks of distress firms' going concern. This paper provides fresh evidence that default risk is a significant explanatory factor in pricing stocks in the emerging market. Also, this study sheds light on the role of NBE firms in asset pricing. Most studies eliminate NBE firms from their sample. However, NBE firms yield superior average cross-sectional returns, albeit with higher volatility. Investors are rewarded with distress risks associated with NBE firms. The outperformance of NBE firms is statistically significant when compared to the overall market. The NBE premium disappears when factoring size, value, and momentum in time-series analysis.

  • This study aimed to identify the key factors that affect the financial market performance (Price-Earnings Model) through a sample of 35 public shareholding industrial companies on the Amman Stock Exchange for the period 2010-2019, using statistical models and methods, such as the Simple Linear Regression Model, Correlation Coefficient, and dispersion board. The study results showed the nonexistence of a statistically significant effect between the intellectual capital and market value added (MVA) and market performance. Results also showed a statistically significant positive effect between financial leverage (FL) and the market performance, where the interpreted variation reached 64%. It showed from the analysis results that the relationship between (MVA) and market performance (P/E) agrees with the study hypotheses, while the result related to (FL) disagrees with the study hypotheses. The study recommends that public shareholding industrial companies should focus more on intellectual capital and show its value in the annual financial statements and reports, and those companies that have high profitability and the chance to hold gains and profits should rely less on debt and more on retained earnings, due to the high risk of debt and in line with the present unstable circumstances in Jordan, especially in light of the global Covid-19 crisis.
