Korea and China are neighboring countries with close contacts in many areas from long time ago, and have shared interests in maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, and in deepening economic relationship which has been mutually complementary in their nature. Therefore their bilateral relations has been developed at a remarkable pace to the extent that it can't be better than now. However, the differences in their responses to North Korean nuclear test and ensuing long-range ballistic missile test-fire and the Chinese strong concern on the possible deployment of THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Air Defence) anti-missile system in Korea show that there are some weaknesses in their relations. For example, Korea is not still confident that China would fully implement the sanction measures contained in the UNSC resolution and I argue that Chinese proposal of parallel negotiation of the denuclearization and the replacement of Korean armistice with the Peace Agreement is not much persuasive. In THAAD issue, if Korea comes to conclusion in the future that THAAD is the most effective way to counter North Korean threats, Korea should make every efforts to assure China that Korea-US alliance is not targeting China, and the THAAD is a defensive system, not damaging Chinese security. In the longer-term, deepening strategic distrust and competition between the US and China in this part of East Asia, changing nature of economic cooperation between Korea and China, and the revival of 'great country mentality' by Chinese people together with the rising nationalism in both Korea and China would cast shadow on Korea-China relation in the years ahead, unless properly handled. In this regard, I suggest that the security communications between the two countries be further strengthened, and the tri-lateral dialogue channel be established among the three countries of Korea, the US and China, particularly on North Korean issues. I also suggest the new pattern of economic cooperation be sought, considering the changing economic environment in China, while strengthening the efforts to understand each other through more interactions between the two peoples.
In recent years, the transportation sector has been undergoing very rapid and multifarious changes due to the M&A, alliances between shipping companies, introduction of larger container ship as it cost reduction measure and the application of integrated logistics to satisfy the needs of customers. Therefore, container terminal is required adequate terminal facilities, sufficient channel depth, efficient handling and low cost of port fees and dues. The purpose of this paper is for functional assessment of efficient container terminal. Firstly, the container operating process information about yard equipment and chassis is extracted through the analysis of practical daily work report of container terminal. Also, the formulae of skill factor and troubles of operator on transfer crane are defined. Lastly, container handling simulation model which consideration of skill factor and trouble of operator is proposed by Petri network model.
Underwater acoustic channels are generally recognized as one of the most difficult communication media because of the multipath propagation, dispersion, and so on. MIMO (Multiple-input multiple-output) techniques have been actively pursued in underwater acoustic communications recently to increase the data rate over the bandwidth-limited channels. The transmit diversity techniques can be applied in this case, and one of them is Alamouti's scheme. In this paper the performances of the transmit diversity technique are evaluated via experiment. Two transmitters and two receivers were used in experiment, and the experiment was performed in indoor water tank. The error rate 5~8% was confirmed in experimental results, and these are the improved values than the error rate 14.8% for SISO(Single-input single-output) channel under same data rate condition.
The distribution and abundance of coastal fish species in Asan Bay, Korea, were estimated from hydroacoustic survey and net catches. Acoustic data were collected with 38 and 200 kHz from July to October of 2012, and converted to the nautical area scattering coefficient (NASC, $m^2/mile^2$) for $0.25n{\cdot}mile$ along ten transects. Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus was the dominant specie in the net catches. The virtual echogram technique was used to distinguish E. japonicus from other species based on the differences in the mean volume backscattering strength (${\Delta}MVBS$) at 38 and 200 kHz. Engraulis japonicus and other fishes are mainly distributed in the center channel and outer part of Asan Bay. E. japonicus tends to move from inner to outer Asan Bay in summer and fall. From NASC data, the target strength and length-weight function of E. japonicus and other fishes were used to estimate the E. japonicus stock at 24.1-93.3 tons, and other fish at 40.6-88.4 tons from July to October 2012. The estimated anchovy biomass compared well with the cumulative catch weight from stow net catches. The hydroacoustic method offers an approach to understanding spatial/temporal structure and estimating the biomass of fish aggregations in coastal areas.

The suspension bridge between Myodo and Gwangyang is located in the main navigation channel to Gwangyang Harbor. So, there is need for the collision protection against large vessels. In this paper, the method of risk analysis and non-linear numerical analysis are conducted to consider the ship collision effects. The results of risk analysis, the annual frequency of collapse is more than the acceptable frequency 0.0001. Therefore, as a ship collision protection, island protection with concrete block quay wall is planned. The ship collision force on the pylon is less than the lateral capacity of pylon from the nonlinear numerical analysis.
This paper presents an algorithm for passive localization of a ship by applying the ray back-propagation technique to the ship radiation noise data. The previous method [S. H. Abadi, D. Rouseff and D. R. Dowling, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 131, 2599-2610 (2012)] estimates the position of a sound source in the near-field environment with no array tilt by using the RBD (Ray-based Blind Deconvolution) and ray back-propagation techniques. However, when there exists an array tilt, the above method leads to a large position estimation error. In order to overcome the problem, this study proposes an algorithm that estimates the position of a sound source by correcting the array tilt using the RBD and ray back-propagation techniques. The proposed algorithm was verified by using the ship noise of SAVEX15 (Shallow-water Acoustic Variability EXperiment in 2015) experimental data.
To assess the relative contribution of bacterial and phytoplankton biomasses to particulate organic matter (POM) in the water column, microbial abundance and biomass were from two transects in the western channel of the Korea Strait in 1996. Bacterial abundance had a mean value of $5.9{\times}10^5$ cells/ml and chlorophyll-a averaged 0.14 ${\mu}g/l$. Bacterial abundance in the Korea Strait showed a positive relationship with chlorophyll-a concentration, while the distribution of POM did not covary with chlorophyll-a. Particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) concentrations were greater in August than in October. Bacterial carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) concentrations were greater in August than in October. Bacterial carbon and nitrogen biomasses were 7.29 ${\mu}gC/l$ and 1.24 ${\mu}gN/l$, respectively, during the study periods. Bacterial biomass was larger in October than in August due to the autumn phytoplankton bloom. Phytoplankton biomass based on chlorophyll-a was 7.67 ${\mu}gC/l$ for carbon and 1.10${\mu}gN/l$l for nitrogen. The ratio of bacterial carbon (BC) to phytoplankton carbon (Cp) averaged 0.95 in the Korea Strait in 1996. Bacteria may play a more significant role in the dynamics of POM than phytoplankton do in August, with BC/Cp ratio of 1.26. The ratio of BC to Cp increased with a decrease in chlorophyll-a concentration. Averaged over all the samples in both cruises, the contribution of microbial biomass to POC and PON was about 43% and 51%, respectively. Bacterial assemblage constituted a significant fraction of POC (21%) and PON (27%). Phytoplankton accounted for 22% of POC and 24% of PON. Microbial biomass played a more important role in the dynamics of POC and PON in October than in August due to a significant increase in microbial biomass in the southern transect (transect-B) in October by the autumn phytoplankton bloom. This study showed that marine microbes may constitute a significant part in the reservoir of POM in the Korea Strait.
The separation performance of a low-pressure hydrocyclone (LPH) was evaluated for suspended-solids removal in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). The dimensions of the LPH were 335 mm cylinder diameter, 575 mm cylinder height, 60 mm overflow diameter, 50 mm underflow diameter, and $68^{\circ}$ cone angle. The inflow rate varied (400, 600, 800, and 1,000 mL $s^{-1}$) with 25%, 25%, 20%, and 10% of bypass ($R_f$), respectively. The maximum total separation efficiency (Et) and reduced separation efficiency (E't) for suspended solids from the effluent of the second settlement tank (before biofiltration) were 58.9% and 45.2%, respectively, at an inflow rate of 600 mL $s^{-1}$ and 25% of $R_f$. The maximum Et and E't for suspended solids from the water supply channel (after biofiltration) were 24.4% and 16%, respectively, at an inflow rate of 1,000 mL $s^{-1}$ and 10% of $R_f$. The maximum grade efficiency (Ei) was 51.6% for a 300 ${\mu}m$ particle size at an inflow rate of 600 mL $s^{-1}$ with 23% of $R_f$. The maximum reduced grade efficiency (E'i) was 37.6% for a 300 ${\mu}m$ particle size at an inflow rate of 1,000 mL $s^{-1}$ with 11% of $R_f$. The results indicate that the separation performance of the LPH for suspended solids removal was size selective and that maximum removal occurred at particle sizes ranging from 300 to 500 ${\mu}m$.
Dispersion management (DM) is the typical technique compensating for the distorted signals due to interaction of group velocity dispersion (GVD) and optical nonlinear effects for transmitting wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) channel with the excellent performance. Optimal net residual dispersion (NRD) and effective launching power range of optical transmission links with random distribution and artificial distribution of single mode fiber (SMF) length and residual dispersion per span (RDPS) required to flexibly design of optical links in DM. It is confirmed that optimal net residual dispersion (NRD) are +10 ps/nm and -10 ps/nm controlled by precompensation and postcompensation, respectively, in both of the considered distribution patterns of SMF length and RDPS. And, in optimal NRD, system performance in optical links with the descending distribution of SMF length and the ascending distribution of RDPS among the artificial distribution patterns are more improved, consequently, effective launching power range is expanded by almost 2 dB than those in optical links with the uniform distribution.

Covertness and performance are very important design goals in the underwater communications. To satisfy both of them, we proposed efficient underwater communication model which combined multiband and direct sequence spread spectrum method in order to improve performance and covertness simultaneously. Turbo coding method with 1/3 coding rates is used for channel coding algorithm, and turbo equalization method which iterately exchange probabilistic information between equalizer and decoder is used for receiver side. After optimal threshold value was set in Rake processing, this paper analyzed the performance by varying the number of chips were 8, 16, 32 and the number of bands were from 1 to 4. Through the simulation results, we confirmed that the performance improvement was obtained by increasing the number of bands and chips. 2~3 dB of performance gain was obtained when the number of chips were increased in same number of bands.
