Time series of the dynamic response of a slender marine structure was predicted using quadratic Volterra series. The wave-structure interaction system was identified using the NARX(Nonlinear Autoregressive with Exogenous Input) technique, and the network parameters were determined through the supervised training with the prepared datasets. The dataset used for the network training was obtained by carrying out the nonlinear finite element analysis on the freely standing riser under random ocean waves of white noise. The nonlinearities involved in the analysis were both large deformation of the structure under consideration and the quadratic term of relative velocity between the water particle and structure in Morison formula. The linear and quadratic frequency response functions of the given system were extracted using the multi-tone harmonic probing method and the time series of response of the structure was predicted using the quadratic Volterra series. In order to check the applicability of the method, the response of structure under the realistic ocean wave environment with given significant wave height and modal period was predicted and compared with the nonlinear time domain simulation results. It turned out that the predicted time series of the response of structure with quadratic Volterra series successfully captures the slowly varying response with reasonably good accuracy. It is expected that the method can be used in predicting the response of the slender offshore structure exposed to the Morison type load without relying on the computationally expensive time domain analysis, especially for the screening purpose.
In this study, the program to investigate the multiple body interaction effects between a floating platform and a shuttle tanker considering the coupled effect of hull (FPSO) with mooring lines and risers was developed. The coupled analysis program, which is called WINPOST-MULT using the hydrodynamic analysis results by WAMIT, was made. For the verification of WINPOST-MULT by means of numerical experiments, two multiple-body models of an FPSO-FPSO and an FPSO-shuttle tanker system are adopted. With the FPSO-FPSO model and a two-mass-spring system to idealize two identical bodies for the 100-year storm wave condition in GOM, the numerical simulations were performed to investigate the interaction effects between two identical bodies. For the more reality, the coupled analysis for the FPSO-shuttle tanker model in the tandem arrangement was carried out in the consideration of the environmental condition of the West Africa Sea as a rather mild condition. Through the case studies with interaction effect and without interaction effect by the iteration method and the combined method, it is verified that the program is a very useful tool for the analysis of the interaction problem of multiple-body system and the coupled problem of the hull/mooring/riser.
The riser systems for floating offshore structures are known to experience tri-modal dynamic responses. These are owing to the combined loadings from the low-frequency response due to riser tension behavior, middle-range frequency response coming from winds and waves, and high-frequency response due to vortex induced-vibration. In this study, fatigue damage models were applied to predict the fatigue damages in a well-separated tri-modal spectrum, and the resultant fatigue damages of each model were compared with the most reasonable fatigue damage calculated by the inverse Fourier transform of the spectrum, rain-flow counting method, and Palmgren-Miner rule as a reference. The results show that the fatigue damage models developed for a wide-band spectrum are applicable to the tri-modal spectrum, and both the Benasciutti-Tovo and JB models could most accurately predict the fatigue damages of the tri-modal spectrum responses.
The abundant nutrients contained in deep seawater are delivered by natural upwellings from the deep sea to the surface sea. However, the natural upwelling phenomenon is limited to specific areas of the sea; in other areas, the thermocline separates the surface sea from the lower layer. Thus, the surface layer is often deficient in nutritive salts, causing the deterioration of its primary productivity and ultimately leading to an imbalance in the marine ecosystem. Without a consistent supply of nitrogenous nutritive salts, they are absorbed by phytoplankton, resulting in a considerable problem in primary productivity. To solve this issue, a floating type of artificial upwelling system is suggested to artificially pump up, distribute, and diffuse deep seawater containing rich nutritive salts. The key technologies for developing such a floating artificial upwelling system are a floating offshore structure with a large diameter riser, self-supplying energy system, density current generating system, method for estimating the emission and absorption of CO2, and way to evaluate the primary production variation. Strengthening the primary production of the sea by supplying deep seawater to the sea surface will result in a sea environment with abundant fishery resources.
The global demand for oil and natural gas has increased, and resource development is moving to the deep sea. Floating and flexible offshore structures such as semi-submersible, spar, and FPSO structures have been widely used. The major equipment of floating structures is always exposed to waves, currents, and other marine environmental factors, which cause structural damage. Moreover, flexible risers are susceptible to an exciting force due to the motion of the floating body. The inline and transverse responses from the three-dimensional behavior of a floating structure occur because of various forces. Typical risers are made of steel pipe and applied in the oil and gas development field, but flexible materials such as polyethylene are suitable for OTEC risers. Consequently, the optimal design of a flexible offshore plant requires a dynamic behavior analysis of slender bodies made of the different materials commonly used for offshore flexible risers. In this study, a three-dimensional motion measurement device was used to analyze the displacements of riser models induced by external force factors, and forced oscillation of a riser was linked to forced oscillation under a steady flow and regular wave condition.

Surge motion of top-end platform induced by periodic wave makes marine flexible riser encounter equivalent sheared-oscillatory flow, under which the Vortex-induced Vibration (VIV) response will be more complicated than pure sheared flow or oscillatory flow cases. Based on a time domain force-decomposition model, the VIV response characteristics under sheared-oscillatory flows are investigated numerically in this paper. Firstly, the adopted numerical model is validated well against laboratory experiments under sheared flow and oscillatory flow. Then, 20 sheared-oscillatory flow cases with different oscillation periods and top maximum current velocities are designed and simulated. Under long and short oscillation period cases, the structural response presents several similar features owing to the instantaneous sheared flow profile at each moment, but it also has some different patterns because of the differently varying flow field. Finally, the effects and essential mechanism of oscillation period and top maximum current velocity on VIV response are discussed systematically.

Three-dimensional numerical simulations were performed to study the effects of flow direction and flow velocity on the flow regime behind a curved pipe represented by a curved circular cylinder. The cylinder is based on a previous study and consists of a quarter segment of a ring and a horizontal part at the end of the ring. The cylinder was rotated in the computational domain to examine five incident flow angles of 0-180° with 45° intervals at Reynolds numbers of 100 and 500. The detailed wake topologies represented by λ2 criterion were captured using a Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The curved cylinder leads to different flow regimes along the span, which shows the three-dimensionality of the wake field. At a Reynolds number of 100, the shedding was suppressed after flow angle of 135°, and oblique flow was observed at 90°. At a Reynolds number of 500, vortex dislocation was detected at 90° and 135°. These observations are in good agreement with the three-dimensionality of the wake field that arose due to the curved shape.
The development of marine technology is expected to increase the demand for marine plants because of increasing oil prices. Therefore, there is also expected to be an increase in the demand for cylindrical structures such as URF (umbilical, riser, flowline) structures and spars, which are used operating in various seas. However, a cylindrical structure experiences vortex induced motion (VIM) in a current. In particular, for risers and umbilicals, it is important to identify the characteristics of the VIM because interference between structures can occur. In addition, various studies have been conducted to reduce VIM because it is the cause of fatigue damage to structures. The helical strake, which was developed for VIM reduction, has an excellent VIM reduction performance, but is difficult to install on structures and has a negative effect on heave motion. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to supplement the shortcomings of the helical strake and develop a high-performance reduction device. In the reduction device developed in this study, a string is placed around the structure inside the flow, causing vibration. The vibration of this string causes a small turbulence in the flow field, reducing the VIM effect on the structure. Finally, in this study, the 2-DOF motion characteristics of models without a suppression device, models with a helical strake, and models with a string were investigated, and their reduction performances were compared through model tests.
