  • In the present study, a practical method to predict cavitation erosion, which caused a critical damage on hydraulic machineries, was developed. Impact and critical velocities were defined to develop a practical method for the prediction of cavitation erosion. To develope the practical method, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was introduced. Cavitating flows with erosion in a converging-diverging nozzle and around a hydrofoil were simulated by developed and validated code. Based on the CFD results, the cavitation erosion coefficient was derived by a curve fitting method. The cavitation erosion coefficient was formulated as the function of the cavitation and Reynolds numbers. A cavitating flow in an axisymmetric nozzle followed by radial divergence was simulated to validate the developed practical method. For the application to a propeller, a cavitating flow around a propeller was simulated. Predicted damage extent showed similar with damaged full-scale propeller blade.

  • In the present trends at which vessels would be supersizedly designed for adapting special cargoes in order for effective controls of logistics in marine transportation, it brings poor manoeuvrability of ships and makes environmental or economical loss seriously due to accidents of a large scale at sea. International Maritime Organization adopted manoeuvring standards and also recommended manoeuvring booklets for ship operators recently. We attempted to find variation of hydrodynamic derivatives when a bare hull was fitted with propeller and rudder, or propeller only by captive model test in the circulating water channel. On comparing experimental results with theoretical values derived from equations, almost same tenden-cies were found at hull-propeller-rudder and hull-propeller situations. Interactions with rudder displayed well at large drift angles.

  • The complicated flow characteristics of upper propeller wake influenced by hull wake are investigated in detail in the present study. A two-frame PIV (particle image velocimetry) technique was employed to visualize the upper propeller wake region. As the upper hull wake affects strongly propeller inflow, upper propeller wake shows much unstable vortical behavior, especially in the tip vortices. Velocity field measurements were conducted in a cavitation tunnel with a simulated hull wake. Generally, the hull wake generated by the hull of a marine ship may cause different loading distributions on the propeller blade in both upper and lower propeller planes. The unstable upper propeller wake caused by the ship's hull is expressed in terms of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and is identified by using the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method to characterize the coherent flow structure in it. Instabilities appeared in the eigen functions higher than the second one, giving unsteadiness to the downstream flow characteristics. The first eigen mode would be useful to find out the tip vortex positions immersed in the unstable downstream region.

  • Marine Propulsion shafting system coupled with medium diesel engine forms multi-degree torsional vibration system which consist of many inertia masses such as crank, flywheel, propeller and sometimes gear system is adopted additionally for the purpose of improving propeller's propulsion efficiency or connecting with PTO/PTI. The periodic excitation torques generated by combustion pressure in cylinder and reciprocating masses induce various kinds of vibrations in this shafting system. If the frequency of this excitation torques is equal to the natural frequency of the shafting, the amplitude of the torsional vibration increases steeply and the damage of crankshaft or gears may be occurred by that. This frequency is called critical speed. When making a plan for shafting system, it is important for this frequency to be expected exactly and not to be in commonly used speed. For this reason, this paper introduces the experimental equipment for torsional vibration of marine propulsion shafting system and describes the theoretic and the experimental methods to look for natural frequencies.

  • Recently, the application and installation of the pod propeller to the cruise ship is dramatically increased. It is because pod propulsion system allows a lot of flexibility in design of the internal arrangement of a ship. To reflect this trend, many researches have conducted to use the pod propeller for the roll stabilization of a ship. In the paper, a roll stabilization controller is designed by using fins and pod propellers as the control actuators for cruise ships. Two kinds of control algorithms are adopted for the roll control system; LQR (Linear Quadratic Regulator) algorithm and frequency-weighted LQR algorithm. Through the numerical simulation, the effect of the turning rate of the pod propeller on the roll control system is analyzed. Analysis of the simulation results indicated that the turning rate of the pod propellers is one of the important parameters which give the significant effects on the roll stabilization.

  • This study aimed at conducting a flow analysis of the pressure distribution, discharge flow rate, and consequent thrust force according to the rotational speed of a three-dimensional screw propeller, and then investigating the effect of the rotational speed on the characteristics of the screw propeller by varying the relevant speed (3200, 2400, 1600, 800 rpm). In particular, the computational domain was considered by the analysis in the blades and outlet chamber, using boundary conditions. The difference between the minimum and maximum pressures was 5.5 MPa under the given conditions. The discharge flow rate at this pressure difference was on the level of 1956.67 kg/s, as a thrust force of 47083.7 T(N) was obtained. This study showed that the discharge flow rate linearly increased with the rotational speed, proportional to the RPM, while the thrust force was gradually and steadily increased with the relevant speed. In addition, it was proved that the occurrence of cavitation under the given conditions was closely related to the decrease in the durability of the screw propeller because the thrust force depends on the speed.

  • An integrated riser heating equipment has been developed to control shrinkage defects originated from casting of a marine propeller. The integrated riser heating equipment is composed of up/down moving parts, heating power source parts and an integrated controller. Heat capacity putting into the riser was calculated quantitatively on the base of a heat transfer analysis, which consisted of the establishment of heating model and the theoretical analysis for heat transfer. The riser heating equipment was evaluated through arc heating and electro-slag heating method. With the results, the arc type heating method was selected by considering high thermal efficiency, inexpensive cost, and convenient workship. This equipment improves the quality of a propeller casting and the poor working environment.
