Effects of the Extracts from the Marine Algae Pelvetia siliquosa on Hyperlipidemia in Rats (해조류인 뜸부기의 추출물이 지질대사에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of the MeOH and water extracts from the marine algae Pelvetia siliquosa were evaluated on hyperlipidemic rats induced by cholesterol rich diet or poloxamer-407. The MeOH and water extracts, when administered orally for 3 consecutive days in hyperlipidemic rats induced by poloxamer-407 (1 ml of 30%), were found to cause a significant decrease in plasma cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations. Both extracts also showed a significant inhibition of serum total cholesterol and triglyceride level in rats treated with cholesterol rich diet. HDL-cholesterol, however, was increased significantly.

  • Time series of gridded surface wind and wind-stress vectors over the world ocean have been constructed by satellite scatterometer data. The products are derived from the ERS-l,2 covering 9 years during 1992-2000 and the Sea Winds on board QuikSCAT (Qscat) which has been operating up to the present since June 1999, so they allows us to analyze variabilities with various time scales. In this study, we focus on interannual variability of the wind stress in the mid- and high-latitude region of North Pacific. These are compared with those by numerical weather prediction(NWP) ones (NCEP Reanalysis). We also examine variability in the wind-stress curl field that is an important factor for ocean dynamics and focus its time and spatial characters in the northwestern Pacific around Japan. It is found that the vorticity field in the lower atmosphere tends to increase gradually with time, suggesting the enhancement of the North Pacific subtropical gyre.

The Study of Consumer Buying Behavior on Rash Guard (래시가드의 소비자 구매행동 조사)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the consumer buying behavior on rash guard for marine sports. Survey data collected from 105 men in activities of marin sports were analyzed by descriptive statistics, chi-square test, correlation analysis. The results of this study were as follows. First, the age showed a positive correlation in activity carrier. The 64.8% of subject enjoyed primarily the marin windsurfing sport. Second, the buying place was different according to the age group and activity carrier. Domestic brands were lower preference than foreign brands. And there was difference between the domestic and foreign brands in design and wearable sense. The coordinates of rash guard were to pursuit the overall beauty, considering the functional and physical protection. Therefore, it is necessary for the domestic brands to develop the products competing with the foreign brands.

A Basic Study on the Development of Oily Sludge Treatment System by Ultrasonic Waves (초음파 오일 스러지 처리 시스템 개발을 위한 기초 연구)

  • All crude oil carries a little of water, sand, and mineral sediment molecules tightly bounded with hydrocarbons. The result is the gradual precipitation of these heavier elements into thick, granular petroleum by products known as crude oil sludge. The oily sludges in ship tanks and in storage facilities have to be treated efficiently in order to keep the security and the capacity of storage facilities, to protect a serious environmental pollution, and to retrieve lost resource. The oily sludge treatment system should be designed to satisfy requirements mentioned in safe work condition. As a basic study, in this paper, an oily sludge treatment system by ultrasonic waves was proposed. Then, the features of ultrasonic energy and recovery of sludge with ultrasonic waves are investigated by experiments. As results, we found that ultrasonic waves are a new energy to flow oil sludge environment-friendly in safe work condition. In addition, it was shown that ultrasonic energy is more efficient than thermal energy in treating oil sludge, and that the volume of wastes for disposal is reduced remarkably.

  • According to International Maritime Organization. more than 50% of cargoes transported by sea today can be regarded as dangerous or hazardous ones, mainly consisting of chemical cargoes in bulk, likely solid or liquid and other materials, such as gases and products for and of the oil refinery industry. 46% of total cargoes handled in ports of Korea in 1999. is said to be dangerous cargoes. These dangerous and hazardous cargoes are quite within a high realms of possibility of accidents, likely to be grave disaster. This paper reviews current risk management system for the dangerous and hazardous cargoes sea-transportation, mainly focusing on the prevailing regal regimes in both USA and Korea. And it aims to suggest some points for advancing the existing Korean system.

  • Today, seaside village has been met with much difficulty from aggravation of fishing conditions including decrease of fishery resources, marine products market opening, reduction of coastal fishing ground. Thus, seaside village tourism can become an useful alternative to revitalize the local community. This study deals with on the tourism activities based on motive of tourist to Seaside Villages in Jeju Island. And it will be find out though the cross analysis of tourism motivation factors and tourism activities factors. With 298 effective responses gathered from an on-site survey. The statistical analysis of the data was conducted using techniques of frequency analysis, factor analysis, cluster analysis, and canonical analysis. The tourism motivation and activities were conformed by Chi-Square Analysis and ANOVA analysis. For the growth of seaside village, many tourist must visit four seasons and tourism facilities and programs will be develop as seaside village experience activities, marine leisure activities, and circumference inquiry activities.

Bioluminescent Assay of ${\alpha}$-Oxidase from Cucumis sativus using Bacterial Luciferase-Coupled Reaction

  • A new assay method of ${\alpha}-Oxidase$ (fatty acid : oxygen dioxygenase, 1-decarboxylating) was developed using a bioluminescence reaction system of marine luminous bacterium, Photobacterium phosphoreum. ${\alpha}$-Oxidase was isolated from a cucumber (Cucumis sativus). Pentadecanoic acid was used as a substrate, and the product, tetradecanal, was analyzed with a bacterial luciferase-coupled reaction. Initial light intensity was directly related to the concentration of tetradecanal in the range of 1 nM to 10 ${\mu}M$. Optimal pH and temperature were 7.5 and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. Optimal pentadecanoic acid concentration in a standard assay of ${\alpha}$-oxidase was 0.1 mM. The Km value of pentedecanoic acid was $85{\mu}M$. This method is straightforward, rapid, convenient, and easy. Its needs no treatment or extraction of reaction mixture.

  • Dissolved silica is one of fatal components at a boiler facility Therefore, a dissolved silica measurement system should be equipped for managing efficiently the boiler facility. Most of silica measurement systems are composed of a sensor module of single-beam type structure, and silica density is measured with a infrared spectrometry using the Lambert-beer method. However, such a system occurs measuring error of large range and inconsistency of a light source, because of measuring a standard sample and a measuring sample alternatively. This paper introduces a method that the sensor module has a split-beam type structure and a tungsten lamp. The proposed system can measure silica density quickly and precisely more than those composing of a single-beam type structure, because of measuring and comparing with two samples at a same time. And examination results are shown to compare efficiencies of the system and existing commercial products, and for an ammonia influence.

  • The mechanism unit, arc chamber and trip unit are imperative components of MCCB which will decide the level of performance of MCCB. Among them, Arc chamber unit is used for extinguishing arc rapidly of fault current and induce the arc inside of grid. At that time inducing arc will split into parts and cooled rapidly so the arc would disappear. This paper suggests new arc chamber unit to improve arc extinguishing performance with optimum design and are applied to actual products based on the results.

  • The worldwide economy has been changing to global and it's going to be put together as one market day by day. In addition the issue of industry has been advanced to automatic and unmanned systems by integration. Thus it is absolutely necessary to be develope and possess high-end technologies to survive in an age of unlimited competition. This development is the core technology of ship unmanned operating system that is very useful and applicable in many fields in addition to ship equipments. Thus it is required to design and develope our own systems which are more reliable compared with foreign products and easy to use and maintenance. We will make an progress of international competitive and contribute to the state economy.
