Evaporation and ignition characteristics of fuel droplet have major influences on the efficiency and performance of engine. In the present study the experiment of evaporation and self-ignition of single fuel was performed under the various ambient conditions. An individually suspended droplet of n-heptane n-hexadecane ethyl-alcohol and light oil were employed as a liquid droplet. Evaporation and ignition characteristics were measured by using the video-camera and image processing technique under the various ambient temperatures (up to 1000310 OC)and partial pressure of oxigen(up to 60%) The evaporation curve shows that the droplet life time ignition delay time decreases as the ambient temperature and partial pressure of oxigen increase, The temperature variations of droplet were also reported for various fuel and ambient temperatures. The numerical simulations were carried out to predict droplet diameter and temperature with favorable agreement.

As the severity of environmental pollution has increased, restrictions on air pollution have been strengthened. Stringent regulations have been imposed, not only on marine diesel engines but also on automotive and industrial power plants. Thus, biofuels have been directly applied in practical engines and used in training ships for basic research. Even though a high biofuel percentage cannot be used in a training ship engine for safety reasons, because this type of engine is larger than those used in institutional laboratories, the results will provide important basic information that will allow organizations to determine the status of a large output. Biodiesel fuel was studied to determine how it would affect the combustion characteristics and exhaust emissions of a marine diesel generator engine. The main results can be summarized as follows. Because the physical and chemical compositions of biofuels are similar to those of diesel fuel, it was found that their practical use was possible in a training ship. The specific fuel consumption and NOx increased, whereas a tendency was found for carbon monoxide and soot to decrease. In addition, no significant pressure change difference was found between the diesel fuel and biofuels.

As international environmental regulations for pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions discharged from ships are being reinforced, it is drawing attention to use LNG as ship fuel. This paper compares the explosion risk potential in the LNG fuel gas supply systems of two types used in marine LNG fuelled vessels. By selecting 8500 TEU class container ships as target, LNG storage tank was designed and pressure conditions were assumed for the use of each fuel supply type. The leak hole sizes were divided into three categories, and the leak frequencies for each category were estimated. The sizes of the representative leak holes and release rates were estimated. The release rate and the leak frequency showed an inverse relationship. The pump type fuel gas supply system showed high leak frequency, and the pressure type fuel gas supply system showed high release rate. Computational fluid dynamics simulation was applied to perform a comparative analysis of the explosion risk potential of each fuel supply system.

Recently, due to the rapid rise of the international oil price, the burden of fuel oil expense is relatively increasing in a ship. And the international restriction of the greenhouse gas which was generated from the burning of fuel oil is also rapidly strengthened. Therefore, to reduce the greenhouse gas and fuel oil consumption, many shipping company adopted the low speed navigation and it was focused on the improvement of fuel consumption efficiency and the usage of alternative energy in the marine engine development field. In this paper, the fuel oil consumption according to the ship's speed was measured in the actual seas and analyzed the shop test results in the shipyard and the ship navigation data from the abstract log. And then it was proposed that the ship's economic speed was 14~15kts and the optimum rpm was 140~150 in specific sea conditions.

In order to study to apply the fuel cell, the study about the power system design and the load control is needed. However, to experiment the fuel cell need the auxiliary device and the complex control technology. For this reason the simulator is needed and such study is in progress actively. In this paper, the PEMFC (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell) that is applied the vehicle, the small sized ship was simulated based on LabVIEW. The characteristic of fuel cell simulator was implemented based on a simulation data using the programmable power supply. The I-V characteristic according to various factors and the polarization curve of fuel cell were analysed.

It has been a principle research topic on the diesel engine development to increase the efficiency and the performance of engine to satisfy the user's needs for high reliability and durability. However, recently with the worldwide concerns at the global climate change and environmental protection, the main target in the diesel engine research has been changed to solve the exhaust emission problem in order to satisfy the strict emission regulations. To reduce the pollutant for the diesel engine, the researchs on the combustion chamber is the most important and has to be performed first of all. The diesel fuel injection system plays major role to air-fuel mixing process and influences engine output, themal efficiency, reliability, noise, and emissions. The experimental studies were conducted by varying the various parametric conditions and the results were campared with the computation and calculated results by using the fuel injection simulation program developed during previous research. From the experiments, the matching technique of a fuel injection pump and nozzle was conducted to understand under the various parametric conditions. Also, the relations between needle lift and wave propagation characteristics in high pressure pipe were examined. The basic design data from the experimentations and computation works would be applied to actual design works of diesel fuel injection system.

Preparing for treatment and management of the emulsified fuel oil which will be generalized henceforth, this paper is an attempt to examine the viscosity-temperature characteristics of emulsified heavy fuel oil which is mixed with water and emulsifier in various mixture ratio by mechanical mixer. The experimental results are summarized as follows: 1. The viscosity-temperature characteristics of the emulsified C & B grade heavy fuel oil mixed with water of same or less weight, is changed according to log.log(v+0.6)=b-3.8log T. 2. The emulsifier has to be added to the emulsified A grade heavy fuel oil mixed with water of same or less weight, because it is instable. Especially if the emulsifier is sodium stearate, it is added more than 0.3% of the weight of oil and water. 3. In the emulsified A grade heavy fuel oil mixed with water and emulsifier, the higher the ratio of water addition becomes, the higher the viscosity is and the more the viscosity-temperature slope decreases. But the higher the ratio of emulsifier addition is, the more the viscosity-temperature slope increases. In this case, the linearity of viscosity-temperature characteristic curve is poorer than that of B and C grade heavy fuel oil. 4. In the emulsified A grade heavy fuel oil mixed with emulsifier of 0.3% or less, the emulsion type is O/W type when water addition ratio is 40%, but it is W/O type when it is 10%, 20%, 30% and 50%.

Fuel represents a significant portion of the operating costs of voyages of the vessel. Under this situation, dramatic increase in fuel price caused a problem that earnings of ship becomes decreased seriously. Pumps in a cooling system of the vessel are often operated inefficiently. The reasons will vary from process to process and application to application. Inefficiency of pumps is one of the reason for making the cost of operating the vessel increased. This paper suggests energy-effective cooling system that controls sea water pumps with inverters to reduce energy consumption in vessel by conducting simulation with LabVIEW. Results shows that electric energy consumption of pumps are significantly deceased. If this energy-effective cooling system is applied to other systems which need cooling, it could be useful in reducing electric energy wastage.

In Asia countries the productions of ship building and marine engines have been increasing, specially Japanese marine industries have worked hard after 1960s and Korean ones after 1980s. Recently the other countries, as Taiwan and China, have been working so that these hour Asian countries are occuping the high level of shared ratio of productions for gross tonnages and horse powers, which are 74 and 64[%] of the world ones ($8.6\times10$+6[GT], $8.6\times10$+6[PS]) in 1994. Korean industries had the highest shared ratio of production of tanker vessel and 2 stroke diesel engine as 45[%]($2.2\times10$+6[GT]) and 37[%]($1.0\times10$+6[PS]) which were more than those of Japan as 34 and 16[%] in 1989 respectively. Some marine databases and their network links among Asian countries are proposed due to the posibility of collection and analyses with their own specifications by the marine industries and operators as well as Japanese ship reliability investigation works(SRIW) like SRIC in Japan. During 1966 and 1996 16 times of SRIW in Japan have been carried out by ship reliability investigation group(SRIG) in Japan. There have been collected and evaluated a great number of field data of failures and maintenances($700\times10$+3[occ], $1.6\times10$+6[MH}) during running hours($13.4\times10$+6[Hrs]), from which many kinds of evaluation indices could be gotten as the three indices of occurring rate$\lambda$(52.2[occ/1000Hrs]), average man-hour mh(2.29[MH/occ]) and manning index MI(119[MH/1000Hrs]). An estimation example having the three indices$\lambda$, mh and MI were shown by the SRIC 1990 Data Base in Japan for the two kinds of fuel oil suppling subsystems which are dual fuel oil one(DFOS) and mono fuel oil one(MFOS). Three indices MI, and mh for DFOS and MFOS results in 7.16 and 5.20[MH/1000Hrs], 2.63 and 2.06[occ/1000 Hrs]. Therefore the more simple subsystem MFOS can save approximately 30[%] of maintenance load. Finlly an utilization methods are shown for the SRIC in Japan by means of computer system and worlwide internet links.
