This study elucidated the floral composition of marine algae and community structure at Hallyeo-haesang National Park, on the southern coast of Korea. In all, 89 species, comprising 10 green, 30 brown and 49 red algae, were identified. The dominant species in terms of importance value were Ulva pertusa, Colpomenia sinuosa, Undaria pinnatifida, Padina arborescens, Hizikia fusiformis, Sargassum sagamianum and Amphiroa dilatata. The vertical distribution of marine vegetation was characterized by Enteromorpha linza - Ulva pertusa - Gelidium divaricatum in the upper intertidal zone, Hizikia fusiformis - Sargassum thunbergii in the middle intertidal zone, and Amphiroa spp. - Hildenbrandtia rubra - Corallina pilulifera in the lower intertidal zone. Functional form group analysis showed that coarsely branched forms comprised 50.3% of the algal community, whereas thick leathery forms, sheet forms and filamentous forms comprised 11.9-13.1%. R/P, C/P and (R+C)/P values were 1.91, 0.74 and 2.64, respectively. A cluster analysis of species occurrence suggested that the number of marine algal species differed greatly among the sampling sites.
Concentrations of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb and Cd in two seaweed species (Sargassum miyabei and S. pallidum) from different areas in Amursky Bay near Vladivostok were determined. An assessment of heavy metal pollution in this bay was made and the results were compared with those from some localities in the world ocean.

The mid-eastern coast of Korea is located at the boundary between cold and warm currents, which causes changes in the distribution and composition of marine organisms in response to fluctuations in the marine environment. To understand the seasonal changes in the seaweed community, we investigated its species composition, biomass, coverage, and frequency from November 2022 to August 2023. A total of 45 species (7 green, 18 brown, and 20 red algae) were found in the study area. In the intertidal zone, the number of species decreased from autumn to summer; the biomass peaked during winter (471.94 g wet weight m-2). Seaweed groups were the dominant functional groups, which were coarsely branched, filamentous, and sheet-like during autumn, winter, spring, and summer. The morpho-functional group was dominated by turf species. In the subtidal zone, the number of species increased during autumn to spring, whereas the biomass peaked during spring (655.27 g wet weight m-2). The functional group was dominated by coarsely branched species throughout all four seasons, whereas the morpho-functional group was dominated by canopy species. Consequently, changes in the biomass of brown and red algae are recognized as key drivers of seasonal changes in seaweed communities.
Marine algal flora and community structure were investigated seasonally at three sites in Gijang on the south-east coast of Korea from February 2006 to January 2007. A Total of 74 species were collected and identified, including 8 green algae, 16 brown algae, and 50 red algae. Of these, 15 species were found throughout the survey period. Mean biomass was 823.2-1,615.4 g wet weight $m^{-2}$ in winter, 689.1-3,196.8 g wet weight $m^{-2}$ in spring, 574.5-1,219.9 g wet weight $m^{-2}$ in summer, and 747.6-1,616.2 g wet weight $m^{-2}$ in autumn. The flora could be classified into six functional groups: coarsely branched form (37.8%), thick leather form (18.9%), sheet form (13.5%), filamentous form (12.2%), jointed calcareous form (10.8%) and crustose form (6.8%). The R/P, C/P and (R+C)/P values reflecting the flora characteristics were 3.13, 0.50 and 3.63, respectively. The number of marine algae species and the biomass in Gijang area were markedly reduced when compared with previous studies. This result suggests possible future changes in the algal vegetation, considering the physical and chemical pollution loadings in the coastal marine environment of this area.

This study was conducted to investigate marine algal community characteristics and the status of barren ground in the summer at study sites on Jeju Island, Korea. Sampling was carried out from July to September 2017 using a qualitative and quantitative survey (including coverage of non-geniculated coralline algae and density of grazer) by scuba diving. A total of 121 species were identified, including 11 (9.1 %) green algae, 24 (19.8 %) brown algae, and 86 (71.1 %) red algae. Hyeongjeseom had the greatest diversity, with 60 species, and Harye the least, with 18 species. The mean biomass at the study sites was $1,503.0g{\cdot}m^{-2}$, while the mean for the neighboring islets ($3,268.7g{\cdot}m^{-2}$) was higher than that of the main island ($914.7g{\cdot}m^{-2}$). Also, dominant species was identified: Sargassum macrocarpum at the neighboring islets, and Ecklonia cava at the main island, with differences showing not only in biomass but also species composition. In conclusion, the marine algal community status in summer at the study sites was evaluated based on the algal community characteristics (species composition, biomass, biomass ratio of kelp species), coverage of non-geniculated coralline algae, and density of grazer. As a result, both Hyeongjeseom and Marado require preservation and management to maintain their excellent marine algal communities, and other sites on the main island require the creation and/or restoration of marine algal communities. In addition, as the generation of barren ground accelerates, it is urgent not only to grasp existing monitoring research but also to identify the status of the marine algal community where it is not known at present.
Phyllodictyon anastomosans (Harvey) Kraft et M.J. Wynne and Saccharina ochotensis (Miyabe) E.E. Lane C. Mayes, Druehl et G.W. Saunders are first recorded in Korea. A pantropical green alga, P. anastomosans was collected on a rock wall in the subtital zone of Jeju Island. This species has very tiny fan-shaped and netted thalli that are green in color. A cold temperate brown alga, P. ochotensis has very thick and leathery thalli that are deep brown in color. Morphological characteistics and habitats of these species are described with taxonomic accounts.
People in Korea, a peninsular, have acquired a variety of marine food resources including seaweeds. Ecklonia stolonifera, a brown algae, is commonly dwelling in Korean coasts and their cultivation methods were developed for a mass-production. Recently, studies have revealed that Ecklonia stolonifera is a promising material for the development of health functional foods. In an effort to carefully review the current understating in the effects and mechanisms of Ecklonia stolonifera on liver functions by deduction from relevant literatures, the effective components were identified as phlorotannins, including dieckol, eckstolonol, eckol, phlorofucofuroeckol A, and phlorosterol. Their aiding action on the hepatic functions is categorized as follows. A) Regulation of oxidative stress by anti-oxidant capacity, B) Protection of hepatocytes from toxins, C) Prevention of alcoholic fatty liver and fibrogenesis, D) Regulation of chronic disease by improvement of inflammatory responses and lipid metabolisms, and E) indirect benefit conferred by a personal total wellness.

Sulfated polysaccharides (SPs) isolated from seaweed have emerged as remarkable bioactive compounds with a wide spectrum of biological activities and have substantial value in the scientific and industrial domains. The current study explores the diverse biological activities of SPs and their relationship with their structures. This aids in an in-depth examination of the multifaceted biological activities of SPs, including anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties, which underpin their potential health benefits. Furthermore, the current study explores the complicated properties of SPs, with their extraction methodologies and techniques for precise characterization. Elucidation of the commercial significance of SPs derived from brown, red, and green seaweed by highlighting their potential applications has emphasized their importance in human well-being. Further, this review emphasizes the challenges needed to overcome research and industrial innovations for SPs. Collaboration among researchers, industry stakeholders, and regulatory authorities can overcome these challenges and elevate the potential of SPs to revolutionize industries such as pharmaceuticals, cosmeceuticals, food, and biotechnology.
The marine algal flora and community structure of Dadohaehaesang National Park, the Southwestern coast of Korea, were investigated monthly during May, July and September 2012. As the results, a total of 86 species including 10 greens, 17 browns and 59 reds was identified, except for blue-greens and crustose reds. The seaweeds that commonly appear during the investigation period are the green algae Ulva australis, the brown algae Ishige okamurae, Myelophycus simplex, Sargassum fusiforme and S. thunbergii and the red algae Gelidiophycus freshwateri, Gelidium. elegans, Corallina officinalis, C. pilulifera, Caulacanthus ustulatus, Ahnfeltiopsis flabelliformis, and Chondrus ocellatus. In Jodo district (Yemiri, Changuri), Ulva australis and Gloiopeltis furcata were dominant species in May, Sargassum fusiforme and Ulva australis were dominant in July, and Gelidiophycus freshwateri and Ulva australis were dominant in September. In Soan/Cheongsan district (Hwaheungpo, Jungdori), Gloiopeltis tenax and Chondracanthus tenellus were dominant species in May, and Gloiopeltis tenax and Chondracanthus tenellus were dominant in July as well as in the spring. And the Caulacanthus ustulatus and Corallina sp. were dominant species in September.
During the past several decades, electricity generating plant increased with remarkable rapidity in Korea. Recently the increase has been much more rapid as the rate of industrialization has accelerated. Construction of nuclear power plants in coastal areas inevitably caused the perturbation of critical coastal habitats and thus influenced marine algal species composition. Particularly, an increase in the building of nuclear power plants led the amounts of heat discharged to increase exponentially. As far as the effects of cooling water and thermal discharges are concerned, benthic marine algae are likely to be vulnerable to a discharge. Heated effluents from nuclear power plants, with the temperature rises of 7~12$^{\circ}C$ under normal operating and design conditions, are discharged through the discharge canal and into natural water bodies. It is clear that the characteristic marine algal community is developed in the area affected by the thermal discharges; i.e. low species richness and low species diversity. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to note that elevated temperatures exert differential effects depending on the algal populations. Benthic marine algae grown at the discharge canal can be regarded as warm tolerant species. 35 species (4 blue-green, 9 green, 8 brown and 14 red algae) of marine algae occurred more than 20eye frequency at discharge canal of three nuclear power plants in the east coast during 1992 ~ 1998 and thus can be categorized as warm tolerant species in Korea. To minimize the ecological impacts of waste heat on benthic marine algae, it is recommended that, in the future, nuclear power plants will have to employ some form of closed-cycle cooling for the condensers.
