  • This paper is prepared to solve the problem of two-dimensional sinusoidal motion of hydrofoil, which can be related not only to the prediction of unsteady forces acting on the marine propeller blade but to the study of aquatic animal's undulatory mode of propulsion. For convenience's shake, this manuscript can be devided into two parts. In the first part, the lift and moment coefficients have been calculated by the method of conformal transformation. In the other part, the thrust and the hydromechanical efficiency have been evaluated, using Lagally's technique having extended to the unsteady case, they also have been compared with the results, which had been obtained by Lighthill[6] and Wu[7] using Prandtl's acceleration potential.

  • A new species belonging to the genus Cyclopinoides Lindberg, 1953 (Cyclopinidae) is described from three beaches in Korea and Japan, as the first record of the genus from the Pacific. Among five species currently recognized in the genus, the new species resembles C. schulzi Herbst, 1964 from the Red Sea in sharing the character combination of 20-segmented antennule and stumpy caudal rami. However, C. orientalis n. sp. differs from it by relatively longer caudal rami (2.5-2.8 times as long as wide in female and about 1.6-1.8 times in male, while less than 2 times in female and about 1.3 times in male of C. schulzi), and by the transformation of an outer distal spine to a slender seta on the distal exopodal segment of leg 4. Moreover, C. orientalis n. sp. is discernible from C. schulzi in having a pyriform copulatory tube (against elongated tubular style in C. schulzi). A key to the species hitherto known in the genus is provided.

  • Two stichotrichous ciliates, Amphisiella annulata (Kahl, 1928) and Pseudoamphisiella alveolata (Kahl, 1932), were collected from the Yellow Sea in Incheon, Korea and were identified as new to Korea. The main diagnostic key to the species of the genera are that the two species share the features of two macronuclear nodules, one marginal row per side, and transverse cirri. A. annulata is distinguishable from other members in the genus mainly due to the several ring-shaped (hollow) structures in its cytoplasm and its wide and narrowly arranged amphisiellid median cirral row. P. alveolata has a conspicuous alveolar layer and two conspicuous macronuclear nodules, but no frontoterminal cirri.

  • Two marine species of family Callyspongiidae, Callyspongia mookriensis n. sp. and Siphonochalina truncata, were collected from Chujado Island and Jejudo Island, Korea during 2005-2007. Callyspongia mookriensis n. sp. is similar to Callyspongia flabelliformis Tanita, 1968 in type of spicule, habitat and growth form but differs in spicule and mesh size. The new species has longer oxea and broader mesh than Callyspongia flabelliformis's. The overall shape and skeleton of Siphonochalina truncata are nearly identical with specimens described by Lindgren (1897).

  • Three new genera and species of siphonostomatoid copepods are described as associates of sponges from shallow water of Samar Island in the Philippines: Samarus filipes n. gen., n. sp., Paurocheres dentatus n. gen., n. sp., and Platymyzon umbonatum n. gen., n. sp. A new family Samarusidae is proposed to accommodate Samarus n. gen. which has rudimentary legs 1-5 represented only by filiform setae. Paurocheres n. gen. is characterized by 2-segmented endopod of leg 4 and reduced setation of legs, and Platymyzon n. gen. by missing of mandibular gnathobase.

  • Six new species of siphonostomatoid copepods are described from sponges collected in the Philippines and Vietnam. Two new genera of Asterocheridae, Andapontius and Holobinus, are proposed. The new species are Andapontius granulatus n. gen. n. sp., Holobinus angustus n. gen. n. sp. and Dermatomyzon boxshalli n. sp. in the family Asterocheridae and Entomopsyllus brevicaudatus n. sp., Paralepeopsyllus leei n. sp. and P. dambayensis n. sp. in the family Entomolepididae. Doropontius denticornis Thompson and Scott, 1903, is redescribed for the first time since its original record.

  • In 2020, during a survey of cnidarian fauna around Chuja-do locating in the northern part of Jeju-do, Korea, several hydroids were collected from the subtidal zone by SCUBA diving. Through taxonomic examination, one unrecorded species, Hydrodendron stechowi Hirohito, 1995, was found in Korea. It was newly added to the list of Korean hydrozoan fauna. This species was discovered for the first time since its first report as a new species in Japan. Their vivid orange-colored colonies were attached to the sponge on rocky substrate between depths of 15 and 20 m. Thus, a total of five species belonging to genus Hydrodendron, including the species reported in this study, have been reported in Korean waters so far.
