Ecotoxicological Evaluation of Sewage Sludge Using Bioluminescent Marine Bacteria and Rotifer

  • Bioassay using the marine bacteria, Vibrio fischeri and rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis, and chemical analyses were conducted to assess the toxicity of the various sewage sludges, one of the major ocean dumped materials in the Yellow Sea of Korea. Sludge elutriates extracted by filtered seawater were used to estimate the ecotoxicity of the sludge. Chemical characterization included the analyses of organic contents, heavy metals, and persistent organic pollutants in sludge. Bacterial bioluminescent inhibition (15 min), rotifer mortality (24 hr) and rotifer population growth inhibition (48 hr) assay were conducted to estimate the sludge toxicity. EC50 15 min (inhibition concentration of bioluminescence after 15 minutes exposed) values by Microtox(R) bioassay clearly revealed different toxicity levels depending on the sludge sources. Highest toxicity for the bacteria was found with the sludge extract from dyeing waste and followed by industrial waste, livestock waste, and leather processing waste. Clear toxic effects on the bacteria were not found in the sludge extract from filtration bed sludge and rural sewage sludge. Consistent with Microtox(R) results, rotifer neonate mortality and population growth inhibition test also showed highest toxicity in dyeing waste and low in filtration bed and rural sewage sludge. High concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and heavy metals were measured in the samples from the industrial wastes, leather processing plant waste sludge, and urban sewage sludge. However, there was no significant correlation between pollutant concentration levels and the toxicity values of the sludge. This suggests that the ecotoxicity in addition to the chemical analyses of various sludge samples must be estimated before release of potential harmful waste in the natural environment as part of an ecological risk assessment.

  • 본 연구에서는 CO2 가스 배출 저감 및 선박 폐열 회수 증대를 목적으로 선박 배기로 버려지는 폐열을 전기로 변환하는 ORC(Organic Rankine Cycle) 발전에 대해 시뮬레이션을 통한 냉매별 효율을 보여주고 있다. 상대적으로 고온인 배기가스의 폐열과 상대적으로 저온인 냉각해수를 이용하여 Aspen HYSYS 11을 이용하여 시뮬레이션을 수행하였다. 해수냉각 ORC 발전시스템의 시뮬레이션 결과, 작동유체 효율은 R717 냉매가 2.86 %로 가장 높았고, 다음 순으로 R152a, R134a, R143a, R125a로 나타났다.

  • 해양침적쓰레기는 유령어업으로 인한 폐어구들로 인해 많은 피해와 쓰레기 추정량 편차 증가 등의 문제를 일으키는 주요 원인이 된다. 본 논문에서는 폐어구 사용량, 유통량, 유실량, 회수량에 대한 실태 파악을 위해 실시간 해양침적쓰레기 감지 인공지능 시스템을 구현하고, 성능 개선을 위한 방법에 대해 연구한다. 실시간 객체인식에 우수한 성능모델인 yolov5모델을 활용하여 시스템을 구현하였고, 성능개선 방법으로는 학습데이터의 '데이터 선별 과정'과 '클래스 세분화' 방법을 적용하였다. 결론적으로 비선별된 데이터셋과 클래스가 세분화된 데이터셋의 객체인식 결과보다 불필요한 데이터를 선별하거나 특징 및 용도에 따라 유사 항목을 세분화 하지 않은 데이터셋의 객체인식 결과는 해양침적쓰레기 인식에 개선된 결과를 보인다.

주상시험장치를 이용한 해안 폐기물 매립장 지반토지 오염물 흡착능에 관한 연구 (A Study on Contaminant Sorption Capacity of Soil Liner for Seashore Waste Landfill by Using Column Test Apparatus)

  • 본 논문은 해안 매립장의 해성점토와 그 기반 풍화토가 갖는 침출수 중의 무기물, 중금속 및 유기물에 대한 오염물 이동성 저감능력을 실내 주상실험에 의하여 조사하였다. 그 결과 무기물 인 칼릅의 경우 해성점토층의 흡착능이 하부 풍화토에 비하여 큰 것으로 나타났으며 중금속인 납과 카드윰의 경우는 매립장 실제 배출 농도보다 큰 농도에서도 완전 흡착되는 것으로 나타났다. 유기성 폐기물에 대한 실험결과 그 흡착능이 무기물이나 중금속에 비하여는 떨어지나 침출수내의 난분해성 유기물질을 기반 점토 및 풍화토가 저감시킬 수 있는 것으로 나타났다.

A proposal on SOFC-PEMFC combined system for maritime applications

  • Maritime transportation is going to transfer to alternative fuels as a result of the worldwide demands toward decarbonization and tougher maritime emissions regulations. Methanol is considered as a potential marine fuel, which has the ability to reduce SOx and CO2 emissions, reduce climate change effects, and achieve the objective of green shipping. This work proposes and combines the innovative combination system of direct methanol solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), gas turbines (GT), and organic Rankine cycles (ORC) for maritime vessels. The system's primary power source is the SOFC, while the GT and PEMFC use the waste heat from the SOFC to generate useful power and improve the system's ability to use waste heat. Each component's thermodynamics model and the combined system's model are established and examined. The multigeneration system's energy and exergy efficiency are 76.2% and 30.3%, respectively. When compared to a SOFC stand-alone system, the energy efficiency of the GT and PEMFC system is increased by 19.2%. The use of PEMFC linked SOFC has significant efficiency when a ship is being started or maneuvered and a quick response from the power and propulsion plant is required.

A Preliminary Study on Direct Ethanol SOFC for Marine Applications

  • This research presents an innovative integrated ethanol solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system designed for applications in marine vessels. The system incorporates an exhaust gas heat recovery mechanism. The high-temperature exhaust gas produced by the SOFC is efficiently recovered through a sequential process involving a gas turbine (GT), a regenerative system, steam Rankine cycles, and a waste heat boiler (WHB). A comprehensive thermodynamic analysis of this integrated SOFC-GT-SRC-WHB system was performed. A simulation of this proposed system was conducted using Aspen Hysys V12.1, and a genetic algorithm was employed to optimize the system parameters. Thermodynamic equations based on the first and second laws of thermodynamics were utilized to assess the system's performance. Additionally, the exergy destruction within the crucial system components was examined. The system is projected to achieve an energy efficiency of 58.44% and an exergy efficiency of 29.43%. Notably, the integrated high-temperature exhaust gas recovery systems contribute significantly, generating 1129.1 kW, which accounts for 22.9% of the total power generated. Furthermore, the waste heat boiler was designed to produce 900.8 kg/h of superheated vapor at 170 ℃ and 405 kP a, serving various onboard ship purposes, such as heating fuel oil and accommodations for seafarers and equipment.

Isolation of a Marine Bacterium Capable of Biodegrading Poly(butylene succinate)

  • We developed a poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) indicator plate and isolated a marine bacterial colony capable of biodegrading PBS based on the appearance of a clear zone. Growth of the PBS-2 isolate was observed over 4 days of culture at $37^{\circ}C$ in PBS-tryptone basal liquid medium, but not in PBS-deprived control medium. The PBS-2 isolate was named Paenibacillus sp. PBS-2 based on 16S rDNA gene sequencing. The PBS-biodegrading marine bacterium isolated in this study will contribute to the effective management of PBS waste problems in marine environments.

선박폐열회수(WHRS) ORC 시스템의 과열기 구성에 따른 특성 해석 (An analysis on the characteristics of superheater organization of ORC system for marine waste heat recovery system(WHRS))

  • 본 연구에서는 R-245fa를 작동유체로 하는 250kW급의 선박폐열회수 발전 시스템을 설계하고 과열기의 구성에 따른 사이클 특성을 연구 하였다. 과열기와 증발기의 직렬연결과 병렬연결의 2가지 조건을 시뮬레이션 하였다. 과열기와 증발기의 직렬연결 시뮬레이션에서는 작동유체 과열에 따른 엔탈피 증가로 4.7%의 출력상승을 얻을 수 있었고, 목표출력을 250kW로 정하였을 경우에는 사이클유량을 4.1% 감소시킬 수 있었다. 과열기와 증발기의 병렬연결 시뮬레이션에서는 사이클의 목표출력을 250kW로 정하였을 경우에 과열기로 가는 열원유체의 유량이 증가함에 따라 사이클 유량이 감소하여 작동유체펌프의 소요동력이 최대 7.9% 감소 하였으며, 유량비율에 따른 사이클효율과 정미효율은 큰 변화가 없었다.
