  • The statistical information of the coastal water temperature monitoring data can be biased because of outliers and missing intervals. Though a number of outlier detection methods have been developed, their applications are very limited to the in-situ monitoring data because of the assumptions of the a prior information of the outliers and no-missing condition, and the excessive computational time for some methods. In this study, the practical robust method is developed that can be efficiently and effectively detect the outliers in case of the big-data. This model is composed of these two parts, one part is the construction part of the approximate components of the monitoring data using the robust smoothing and data re-sampling method, and the other part is the main iterative outlier detection part using the detailed components of the data estimated by the approximate components. This model is tested using the two-years 5-minute interval water temperature data in Lake Saemangeum. It can be estimated that the outlier proportion of the data is about 1.6-3.7%. It shows that most of the outliers in the data are detected and removed with satisfaction by the model. In order to effectively detect and remove the outliers, the outlier detection using the long-span smoothing should be applied earlier than that using the short-span smoothing.

  • An investigation on the polluted sediments in the Lake Sihwa and the benthos that inhabited on the sediments was conducted. Cost effective remediation alternatives were derived form the results of the investigation. The sediment samples taken from four sampling points out of thirteen showed relatively high heavy metal (particularly copper) concentrations which exceeded the Effects Range Low (ERL) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, USA. The four sampling points were located in front of industrial complexes. Although the heavy metals appeared to have affected the growth of the benthos, the concentration of it did not exceed the criteria of dredging that were developed by Netherlands or the State of Washington, USA. However, contamination by organic matters and sulfur compounds was severe, which exceeded the criteria of dredging that were established in Japan. The sediments taken from the four sampling points which were contaminated with heavy metals showed higher organic matter content in general. The organic matters in the sediments depleted oxygen in summer, which appeared to be fatal to the benthos. A comprehensive analysis on the sediments, benthos, and other environmental impact from the contaminated sediments drew a conclusion that the benthonic environment of the Lake Sihwa needed a stepwise remediation, giving a particular emphasis on the clean up of the sediments upstram of the Lake which could cause odor problems to the nearby residential area.

  • A quantitative phytoplankton study in Korean waters was commenced in 1964 as a part of the primary production studies of Koreans seas, and it was continued with the cruises for Cooperative Studies of the Kuroshio(C.S.K) in 1965-1968. Phytoplankton samples were taken by dipping about 500ml of sea water from the surface, and then fixed by ading neutralized formlin. This report deals with the results obtained during 1965-1966. I examined a total of 298 samples of surface phytoplankton collected in the wate neighboring Korea in the above-mentioned period, and detected 147 species of diatoms and 22 species of dinoflagellates. Among them 123 species of diatoms and 18 species of dinoflagellates occured in the Japan Sea region, 133 species of diatoms and 11 species of dinoflagellates occured in the Korea Strait region, and 49 species of diatom and 8 species of dinoflagellates occured in the Yellow Sea region. And thd phytoplankton standing crops are dept in a fair abundance in the Japan Sea area all the year round, and are poor in the Yellow Sea area. The seas surrounding Korea are divided into seven regions by the planktological characteristics; northern and southern parts of the Japan Sea, eastern, western and southern parts of the Korea Strait, southern and northern parts of the Yellow Sea. The representative of the phytoplankton community in each sea region is generalized as follows; northern part of the Japan Sea is dominant with Chaetoceros group, southern part of the Japan Sea is dominant with Chaetoceros group and Skeletonema costaum, eastern part of the Korea Strait is dominant with Chaetoceros group and Pleurosigma sp., southern part of the Korea Strait is dominant with Chaetoceros group and Rizosolenia group, western part of the Korea Strait is most poor in phytoplankton, southern part of the Yellow Sea is dominant with Pleurosigma sp. and Coscinodiscus group, and northern part of the Yellow Sea is dominant with Pleurosigma sp. and Eucampia zoodiacus. Chaetoceros curvisetus, Leptocylindrus danicus, Pleurosigma normanii, Thalassionema nitzschioides, Thalassiothrix flauenfeldii appeared all the year round in the neighboring sea of Korea. There were 24 species (18 species of diatoms and 6 species of dinoflagellates) of the pecuriar phytoplankton in the Japan Sea, 27 species (25 species of diatoms and 2 species of dinoflagellates) of that in the Korea, and 7 species (5 species of diatoms and 2 species of dinoflagellates) of that in the Yellow Sea, respectively.

  • An airborne gravity survey using a helicopter was carried out in October 2008, offshore along the northern Noto Peninsula, to understand the shallow and regional underground structure. Eleven flight lines, including three tie lines, were arranged at 2 km spacing within 20 km of the coast. The total length of the flight lines was ~700 km. The Bouguer anomalies computed from the airborne gravimetry are consistent with those computed from land and shipborne gravimetry, which gradually decrease in the offshore direction. So, the accuracy of the airborne system is considered to be adequate. A local gravity low in Wajima Bay, which was already known from seafloor gravimetry, was also observed. This suggests that the airborne system has a structural resolution of ~2 km. Reduction of gravity data to a common datum was conducted by compiling the three kinds of gravity data, from airborne, shipborne, and land surveys. In the present study, we have used a solid angle numerical integration method and an iteration method. We finally calculated the gravity anomalies at 300 m above sea level. We needed to add corrections of 2.5 mGals in order to compile the airborne and shipborne gravity data smoothly, so the accuracy of the Bouguer anomaly map is considered to be nearly 2 mGal on the whole, and 5 mGals at worst in limited or local areas.

  • In this study, the wave energy potential (WEP) was evaluated using the wave data measured at nine stations along the Korean east coast and compared with the results of previous studies. Along the Korean east coast, seasonal variations in the WEP were around 6.4 kW/m in winter and 1.2 kW/m in summer, greater than spatial variations of 2.5~4.3 kW/m. In most stations, the wave power during June to July were shown to be smallest. The estimated annual average WEP was greatest in the Mukho and Jukbyeon stations located in the middle of the Korean east coast at around 4.3 kW/m, and smallest in the Jinha station at around 2.5 kW/m. The results found using the previous hindcast data showed WEP having a tendency to decrease from south to north. However, in this study, the WEP showed a tendency of being greatest in the middle of the Korean east coast and decreasing in both north and south directions.

  • The body color pattern in fish is a distinctive feature for species identification. The blass bloched rockfish Sebastes pachycephalus is a commercially important marine fish species, distributed in the central and southern parts of Korea and south Hokkaido of Japan. It has a morphological feature divided into four subspecies according to with or lacking distinct spots on the body surface, and to the location of markings on the body surface. However, the genetic basis of body color pattern of S. pachycephalus is still unknown. Thus we analyzed the transcriptome of S. pachycephalus skin samples using RNA-seq analysis to investigate functional genes related to body color patterns. The experimental skin samples were prepared by classified into 'Wild type' (lacking distinct spots and markings) and 'Color type' (with distinct spots and marking). Two skin sample transcriptomes were compared pairwise and the results revealed that were 164 differentially expressed unigenes in the skin samples of 'Wild type' and 'Color type'. Gene Ontology analysis of 164 differentially expressed unigenes showed that these genes were included in the functional group of molecular function (2 genes), biological process (46 genes), and cellular component (6 genes). There were several genes that body color type skin specific expression and the genes were CTL (Galactose-specific lectin nattectin), CUL1 (Cullin-1), CMAS (N-acylneuraminate cytidylyltransferase), NMRK2 (Nicotinamide riboside kinase 2), ALOXE3 (Hydroperoxide isomerase ALOXE3), SLC4A7 (sodium bicarbonate cotransporter 3). Our study is the first attempt to search for functional genes involved in the formation of body color patterns in S. pachycephalus. The differentially expressed unigenes obtained in this study can be used as candidate genes for functional gene study related to body coloration of fish.

  • This study examined the adsorption characteristics of heavy metal ions ($Cr^{6+}$, $As^{3+}$) in an aqueous solution using recycled aggregate (RA) and recycled aggregate (RA)/steel slag (SS) composites. The RA and SS are favorable for the absorbent because it contains about 91% and 86.9%, respectively, which are some of the major adsorbent ingredients (CaO, $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$) for heavy metal. Kinetic equilibrium of $Cr^{6+}$ and $As^{3+}$ in RA and RA/SS composites reached within 180 min and 360 min, respectively. The kinetic data presented that the slow course of adsorption follows the Pseudo first and second order models. The equilibrium data were well fitted by the Freundlich model and showed the affinity order of $As^{3+}$ > $Cr^{6+}$. The results of $As^{3+}$ also showed that the adsorption capacity slightly increased with increasing pH from 6 to 10. Meanwhile, the adsorption capacity of $Cr^{6+}$ was slightly decreased. From these results, it was concluded that the RA and RA/SS composites can be successfully used for removing the heavy metals ($Cr^{6+}$ and $As^{3+}$) from aqueous solutions.

  • 97% of water on earth exists in the form of seawater. Therefore, the use of marine resources is one of the most important research issues at present. The use of seawater is expanding in various fields (seawater desalination, cooling water for nuclear power plants, deep seawater utilization, etc.). Seawater intake systems utilizing sand filters in order to take in clean seawater are being actively employed. For the intake pipe used in this system, assuring equal intake flows through the respective holes is very important to improve the efficiency of the intake and filtering process. In this study, we analyzed the efficiency of the dual structure perforated pipe used in the seawater intake system using 3D numerical simulations and the inflow rate according to the gap of the up holes. In the case of decreasing gaps in the up holes toward the pipe end, the variation of the total inflow rate was small in comparison with the other cases. However, the standard deviation of the inflow rate through the up holes was the lowest in this case. Also, stable flow occurred, which can improve the efficiency of the intake process. In the future, a sensitivity analysis of the various conditions should be performed based on the results of this study, in order to determine the factors influencing the efficiency, which can then be utilized to derive optimal designs suitable for specific environments.

  • Infra-gravity waves (IGWs) with a period of 1~3 minutes are a factor that directly influences the motion analysis of moored ships inside a harbor and longshore sediment transport analysis. If significant levels of IGWs from far seas are transferred to a harbor and amplified, they may cause downtime of large ships and induce economic loss. In this study, transfer characteristics of the IGWs intruding from outside to inside Pohang New Harbor were analyzed using statistical analysis and transfer function of wave data measured at both outside and inside the harbor for around 5 years. Transfer characteristic analysis was limited to events where IGWs had wave heights above 0.1 m. The wave height distribution of inside the harbor was similar to that of outside the harbor, while the wave period variance of the former was larger than that of the latter. The parameters of the transfer function was optimally estimated according to each event. The estimated average RMS error of the wave height inside the harbor was around 0.013 m. The estimated parameters had a strong correlation with the linear combination information of IGW wave height, period, and direction (R = 0.95). The transfer function suggested in this study can quickly and easily estimate information on IGWs inside the harbor using IGW information predicted beforehand, and is expected to reduce damage due to unexpected restrictions on harbor usage.

  • As the temperature data show a distribution pattern with a number of peaks, assumption of normal distribution will result in a serious bias in the analysis. In this study, the Gaussian Mixture Distribution (GMD), a type of bimodal distribution, is presumed as a frequency distribution for the water temperature, in order to estimate the optimal parameter and to carry out the relation analysis between the optimal parameter and the basic statistical information such as mean and variance on the data. By the way, an estimation formulae to compute the frequency distribution of the data is developed by computing the parameters of GMD (i.e. ${\alpha}_1$, ${\mu}_1$, ${\sigma}_1$, ${\alpha}_2$, ${\mu}_2$, ${\sigma}_2$) by means of the major characteristic values, such as mean, standard deviation and skewness of the data. The formulae shows an excellent coincidence with the result from the observation data, in the RMS limit accuracy of 5%.
