The investigation for the catch and species composition in the deep sea of the East Sea was done to search marine organisms using some kinds of traps with small commercial fishing vessel near Goseong, Korea from 2008 to 2009. The experiments was carried out with some different traps at the depth of 200m, 400m, 700m and 1,000m. In 2008, the amount of catch with rectangular, cone and drum net traps was 91.4kg with twelve trips and the proportion of catch with rectangular and cone traps was high. Dominant species caught were Aniwan whelk (57%), snow crab (12%), hunchback sculpin (7%) and red snow crab (5%). The catch of Aniwan whelk was done well with rectangular and cone traps at the depth of 700-1,000m. Snow crab was mainly caught with rectangular and cone traps at the shallower depth of 200m, while red snow crab caught a lot with cone trap at the deeper depth of 700m. In 2009, the amount of catch with rectangular, cone and round traps was 92.4kg with nine trips. The proportion of catch with round trap was higher than that with cone trap. Dominant species caught were snow crab (67.1%), Aniwan whelk (14.8%) and northern shrimp (9.8%). Snow crab was caught well with round trap at the depth less than 400m.

The formation and structure of the shelf front in the eastern part of the Yellow Sea are studied on the basis of oceanographic data collected in August, 1982 and February, 1983. This paper also describes the distribution of planktonic organisms of the shelf front. In summer the shelf front is formed in the area ($126^{\circ}02^'E-126^{\circ}05^'E$) ca. 20 miles from the shore at the depths of 15-25 m. in winter, however, no distinct shelf front is formed. Based on the cluster analysis of surface phytoplankton the species composition shaws a discontinuous pattern in the vicinity of the shelf front in summer, 1982. A similar trend is observed in distribution of some copepod species in winter, l983.

Among the carotenoid biosynthesis genes, crtI gene encodes the phytoene desaturase (CrtI) enzyme, and phytoene desaturase convert phytoene to lycopene. Phytoene desaturase is involved in the dehydrogenation reaction, in which four single bonds in the phytoene are introduced into a double bond, eliminating eight hydrogen atoms in the process. Phytoene desaturase is one of the key regulating enzyme in carotenoid biosynthetic pathway of various carotenoid biosynthetic organisms. The crtI gene in genomic DNA of Paracoccus haeundaensis was amplified and cloned into a T-vector to analyze the nucleotide sequence. As a result, the crtI gene coding for phytoene desaturase from P. haeundaensis consists of 1,503 base pairs encoding 501 amino acids residues. An expression plasmid containing the crtI gene was constructed, and Escherichia coli cells containing this plasmid produced the recombinant protein of approximately 55 kDa, equivalent to the molecular weight of phytoene desaturase. The expressed protein in cell lysate showed enzymatic activity similar to phytoene desaturase. Phytoene and lycopene were analyzed by HPLC and measured at wavelength of 280 nm and 470 nm, respectively. The $K_m$ values for phytoene and NADPH were $11.1{\mu}M$ and $129.3{\mu}M$, respectively.
The short-term acute toxicities of mercury, cadmium and copper for the clam, Meretrix lusoria were determined from 28 June to 15 July, 1978. In the test with mercury and copper, the rate ot mucus excretion increased gradually at a higher concentration. But the clams did not excrete mucus in the solutions of cadmium and natural sea water. The rate of mucus excretion in mercury was $42.9\%$, and that in copper was $14.3\%$ in a test solution of 1mg/l. mercury was more toxic than copper. The median lethal concentration after 96 hours (96 hr-Lc 50) was 0.67mg/l in mercury, 7.04mg/l in copper and 7.10mg/l in cadmium. Consequently it was found that mercury was the most toxic substance and cadmium was the least. meanwhile, it was considered that exposure time by stimulation in a fixed concentration caused the test animals to respond.
As a subset study to discover indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea in 2014, a total of 34 bacterial strains assigned to the phylum Actinobacteria were isolated from various environmental samples collected from activate sludge, biotite, freshwater, gut of marine organisms, mud flat, sediment, soil, spent mushroom compost and sea water. On the basis of high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity and a tight phylogenetic association with the closest species, it was revealed that each strain was assigned to independent and previously described bacterial species, with the exception of one isolate. There is no official report that these 34 species included in the phylum Actinobacteria have been described in Korea: 6 species of 5 genera in the order Corynebacteriales, 1 species of 1 genus in the order Frankiales, 2 species of 2 genera in the Micromonosporales, 14 species of 10 genera in Micrococcales, 2 species of 2 genera in the Propionibacteriales, 1 species of 1 genus in the Pseudonocardiales, 4 species of 2 genera in the Streptomycetales, 2 species of 2 genera in the Streptosporangiales and 1 species of 1 genus in the Solirubrobacterales. Gram reaction, cell and colony morphology, pigmentation, physiological characteristics, isolation sources and strain IDs are described in the section of species description.
During an investigation of the biodiversity of bacterial species in Korea, we discovered many indigenous prokaryotic species. A total of 39 bacterial strains in the class Alphaproteobacteria were isolated from various environmental samples collected from marine organisms, sea water, fresh water, tap water, mud flats, activated sludge, mineral water, tidal flats, soil and decayed plants. From the high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (>98.7%) and formation of robust phylogenetic clades with the most closely related species, it was determined that each strain belonged to each independent and predefined bacterial species. There is no official report that any of these 39 Alphaproteobacteria species have been described in Korea. Specifically, 18 species in 11 genera in the order Sphingomonadales, 11 species in 10 genera in the order Rhizobiales, two species in two genera in the order Caulobacterales, six species in six genera in the order Rhodobacterales and two species in two genera in the order Rhodospirillales were found in Korea. Gram reaction, colony and cell morphology, basic biochemical characteristics, isolation source, and strain IDs are described in the species description section.
The quality and quantity of live food sources strongly influence the success of fish production in farming operations. Thus, critical studies of live forage species are a crucial element for progress in fish aquaculture. The fat content of food is an especially important determinant of growth in marine fish. Omega-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) are essential components of diet that determine the nutritional value of larval fish. Euglena is a protist that has potential as a forage species. These single-celled organisms have plant and animal characteristics they are motile, elliptical in shape and 15–500 μm in diameter. Their nutritional content is excellent, but most studies have focused on cells raised in autotrophic culture. We therefore examined differences in the lipid and fatty acid contents, and the growth of Euglena cells grown under autotrophic, heterotrophic, and mixotrophic conditions. Biomass production reached 15.03 g/L, 12.28 g/L, and 3.66 g/L under mixotrophy, heterotrophy, and autotrophy, respectively. The proportional n-3 HUFA content differed among culture methods: 10.04%, 5.80% and 10.01% in mixotrophic, heterotrophic and autotrophic cultures, respectively. Mixotrophy was to be the best form of cultivation for improving the growth and nutritional content of Euglena.
Reciprocal hybrids between the mud loach ($Misgurnus$$mizolepis$) and cyprinid loach ($M.$$anguillicaudatus$) were produced by artificial fertilization. The chromosome number of mud loach was 2n=48, consisting of 12M+4SM+32A chromosomes. The cyprinid loach has 2n=50, consisting of 10M+4SM+36A chromosomes. The chromosome numbers of the diploid reciprocal hybrids were 2n=49, consisting of 11M+4SM+34A chromosomes. All the karyotypes documented in this study had the same arm number of 64. There was no evidence of chromosomal polymorphisms or sex-related heteromorphism. The cytogenetic traits of the hybrid genotypes were intermediate between those of the parent species. In all genotypes, the chromosomal NORs localized to the terminal short arms of the same metacentric chromosome pair. These results suggest that Robertsonian translocation occurred between metacentric chromosome 1 of mud loach and acrocentric chromosome of cyprinid loach.

The Ballast Water Treatment System was developed to prevent the unintended transport of unwanted organisms from one region to another as demanded by the IMO (International Maritime Organization). Although various types of BWTS in the world have been developed until now and applied to various ships, there has been no systematic basis for its selection and installation. Currently, the system selection and installation are as per ship owner’s suggestion or by easy installation point of view by the shipyard. In order to organize, systemize and solve problems related to the selection and installation of BWTS, a definitive study has been performed to come up with the best alternative to derive value and criteria which were to be met for vessels which are to be equipped with BWTS. Multiple criteria were compared alongside each other during the course of this study. Accordingly an AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) analysis method for A, B and C companies were done for container ships with size 10,000 TEU and above. Equipment type for “A” company is “Filter, UV & TiO2” combined type. For “B” company it is “Filter & UV” combined type. Finally for “C” company it is “Electrolysis” type. Henceforth, the results of this study aims to come up with the optimum way to select the best and the most suitable BWTS for a certain vessel.
We carried out a study on thermohaline structure and phytoplankton com munity in the East China Sea during early summer in 2005. As a result of marine environment and phytoplankton community, three characteristics of water type were identified. The former was characterized by the dominant species with diatoms, Chaetoceros lacinious, Ch. decipiens, Guninardia flaccida, Paralia sulcata, Pseudonitzschia pungens and Pseudosolenia calcar-avis in Chinese coastal waters, the secondary was done by lower water temperature, salinity and the dominant species with dinoflagellates, Prorocentrum donghaiense and Ceratium fusus, in over-all areas and the latter was done by the dominant species with coastal species of diatoms, Skeletonema costafum and Nitzschia longissima and silicoflagellate, Dictyocha speculum var. octopers in the transfer areas of Chinese continental coastal waters. Phytoplankton community in the surface layer identified a total of 66 species belonging to 36 genera. Dominant species was Prorocentrum donghaiense, Chaetoceros lacinious, Skeletonema costatum. Standing crops of phytoplankton in the surface layer flue tuated between $1.5 \times 10^4$cells $L^{-1}$ and $3.5\times 10^{5}$ cells $L^{-1}$. And the highest value appeared in the Changjiang estuaries with high dominance by diatoms and lowest one occurred in the southwestern area of Jeju Island with high dominance by dinoflagellates. Red tides with dinoflagellate, Prororcentrum donghaiense appeared in the frontal areas with mazimum cell density, $3.4\times 10^5$ cells $L^{-1}$. And outbreak environments was low water temperature under $20^{\circ}C$, and low salinity under 31.55 psu. The vertical distribution of red tide organisms went to about 30m depth from surface.
