Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), an increasingly growing acquisition technique in the oil and gas exploration and seismology fields, has been used to record seismic signals using optical cables as receivers. With the development of imaging methods for DAS data, full waveform inversion (FWI) is been applied to DAS data to obtain high-resolution property models such as P- and S-velocity. However, because the DAS systems measure strain from the phase distortion between two points along optical cables, DAS data must be transformed from strain to particle velocity for FWI algorithms. In this study, a plane-wave FWI algorithm based on the relationship between strain and horizontal particle velocity in the plane-wave assumption is proposed to apply FWI to DAS data. Under the plane-wave assumption, strain equals the horizontal particle velocity, which is scaled by the velocity at the receiver position. This relationship was confirmed using a numerical experiment. Furthermore, 4-layer and modified Marmousi-2 velocity models were used to verify the applicability of the proposed FWI algorithm in various survey environments. The proposed FWI was implemented in land and marine survey environments and provided high-resolution P- and S-velocity models.
Single-channel seismic exploration has proven effective in delineating subsurface geological structures using small-scale survey systems. The seismic data acquired through zero- or near-offset methods directly capture subsurface features along the vertical axis, facilitating the construction of corresponding seismic sections. However, substantial noise in single-channel seismic data hampers precise interpretation because of the low signal-to-noise ratio. This study introduces a novel approach that integrate noise reduction and signal enhancement via matrix rank optimization to address this issue. Unlike conventional rank-reduction methods, which retain selected singular values to mitigate random noise, our method optimizes the entire singular value spectrum, thus effectively tackling both random and erratic noises commonly found in environments with low signal-to-noise ratio. Additionally, to enhance the horizontal continuity of seismic events and mitigate signal loss during noise reduction, we introduced an adaptive weighting factor computed from the eigenimage of the seismic section. To access the robustness of the proposed method, we conducted numerical experiments using single-channel Sparker seismic data from the Chukchi Plateau in the Arctic Ocean. The results demonstrated that the seismic sections had significantly improved signal-to-noise ratios and minimal signal loss. These advancements hold promise for enhancing single-channel and high-resolution seismic surveys and aiding in the identification of marine development and submarine geological hazards in domestic coastal areas.
Using natural electromagnetic (EM) fields at low frequencies, magnetotelluric (MT) surveys can investigate conductivity structures of the deep subsurface and thus are used to explore geothermal energy resources and investigate proper sites for not only geological $CO_2$ sequestration but also enhanced geothermal system (EGS). Moreover, marine MT data can be used for better interpretation of marine controlled-source EM data. In the interpretation of MT data, MT modeling schemes are important. This study improves a three dimensional (3D) MT modeling algorithm which uses edge finite elements. The algorithm computes magnetic fields by solving an integral form of Faraday's law of induction based on a finite difference (FD) strategy. However, the FD strategy limits the algorithm in computing vertical magnetic fields for a topographic model. The improved algorithm solves the differential form of Faraday's law of induction by making derivatives of electric fields, which are represented as a sum of basis functions multiplied by corresponding weightings. In numerical tests, vertical magnetic fields for topographic models using the improved algorithm overcome the limitation of the old algorithm. This study recomputes induction vectors and tippers for a 3D hill and valley model which were used for computation of the responses using the old algorithm.
Ground roll is a surface wave which is usually observed in the land seismic data. It is one of the typical coherent noise. During the reflection data processing, ground roll is removed because it is considered as noise. This removal process often causes the loss of reflection signals if the ground roll overlaps reflection signals. In this study, we look over Karhunen-Loeve Transform (KLT) and analyze its effects to suppress the ground roll appropriately while reducing the reflection loss. Numerical tests in homogeneous elastic media show that the ground roll has been properly rejected. However, the field data application reveals that there is no significant suppression of ground roll when compared to band-pass filtering. This can be considered that it is hard to calculate horizontally aligned gathers in the field data because the ground roll contains a wide range of frequency bands. On the contrary, the result of singular value decomposition (SVD) filtering shows that the ground roll has been significantly reduced. It is thought that the SVD filtering performs better in the ground roll suppression than KLT because it is easy to calculate the horizontally aligned gathers in the SVD filtering.

Gas hydrate has been attractive topic for two dedicates because it may cause the global warming, ocean hazards associated with the instability of marine slope due to the gas hydrate release as well as high potential of future energy resources. The study on gas hydrate in Ulleung basin has been performed since 1999 to explore the potential and distribution of gas hydrate offshore Korea. The numerous multi channel seismic data have been acquired and processed by Korea Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (KIGAM). The results showed clearly the gas hydrate indicators such as pull up structure, bottom simulating reflector (BSR), seismic blanking zone. The prestack depth migration has been considered as fast and accurate technique to image the subsurface. In this paper, we will present both the conventional seismic data processing and apply Kirchhoff prestack depth migration for gas hydrate data set. The results will be applied for core sample collections and for proposal more detail 2D with long offset or 3D seismic exploration.
In this study, a series of data processing methods to calculate gravity anomaly from observed marine gravity data by NORI(National Oceanic Research Institute) using RV 'Hayang2000' in 1999 at southern part of the yellow sea were developed. As a results, the RMS difference of Free air anomaly among 264 crossover points is 0.436 mGal. The shipborne gravity data by NORI using RV 'Haeyang2000' will be very useful for gravitational research in and around Korean peninsula.
The accuracy of the automatic NMO velocity analysis, which is used for an effective and objective NMO velocity analysis, is highly affected by the velocity resolution of the velocity spectrum. In this study, we have developed an automatic NMO velocity algorithm, where the velocity spectra are created using high-resolution bootstrapped differential semblance (BDS), and the velocity analysis on CMP gathers is performed in parallel with MPI. We also compared the velocity models from the developed automatic NMO velocity algorithm with high-resolution BDS to those from BDS. To verify the developed automatic velocity analysis module we created synthetic seismic data from a velocity model including horizon layers. We confirmed that the developed automatic velocity analysis module estimated velocity more accurately. In addition, NMO velocity which yielded a CMP stacked section, where the coherency of the events were improved, was estimated when the developed module was applied to a marine field data set.
The sea layer in marine Controlled-Source Electromagnetic (mCSEM) survey changes the conventional definition of apparent resistivity which is used in the land CSEM survey. Thus, the development of a new algorithm, which computes apparent resistivity for mCSEM survey, can be an initiative of mCSEM data interpretation. First, we compared and analyzed electromagnetic responses of the 1D stratified gas hydrate model and the half-space model below the sea layer. Amplitude and phase components showed proper results for computing apparent resistivity than real and imaginary components. Next, the amplitude component is more sensitive to the subsurface resistivity than the phase component in far offset range and vice versa. We suggested the induction number as a selection criteria of amplitude or phase component to calculate apparent resistivity. Based on our study, we have developed a numerical algorithm, which computes appropriate apparent resistivity corresponding to measured mCSEM data using grid search method. In addition, we verified the validity of the developed algorithm by applying it to the stratified gas hydrate models with various model parameters. Finally, by constructing apparent resistivity pseudo-section from the mCSEM responses with 2D numerical models simulating gas hydrate deposits in the Ulleung Basin, we confirmed that the apparent resistivity can provide the information on the geometric distribution of the gas hydrate deposit.
Marine magnetic surveys provide a rapid and cost-effective method for pioneer geophysical survey for many purposes. Sea-surface magnetometers offer high accuracy but are limited to measuring the scalar total magnetic field and require dedicated cruise missions. Shipboard three-component magnetometers, on the other hand, can collect vector three components and applicable to any cruise missions. However, correcting for the ship's magnetic field, particularly viscous magnetization, still remains a challenge. This study proposes a new additional correction method for ship's viscous magnetization effect in vector data acquired by shipboard three-component magnetometer. This method utilizes magnetic data collected simultaneously with a sea-surface magnetometer providing total magnetic field measurements. Our method significantly reduces deviations between the two datasets, resulting in corrected vector anomalies with errors as low as 7-25 nT. These tiny errors are possibly caused by the vector magnetic anomaly and its related viscous magnetization. This method is expected to significantly improve the accuracy of shipborne magnetic surveys by providing corrected vector components. This will enhance magnetic interpretations and might be useful for understanding plate tectonics, geological structures, hydrothermal deposits, and more.
A new sedimentary basin is reported from the marine multi-channel seismic data which were acquired for the hydrocarbon exploration on the southwestern Korean continental shelf in 1970. Along the southeastern part of Line 1192, the about 60-km-long basin with the thickness of 0.55~1.1 s is observed on the near-trace gather. However, both new and previous 24-fold stack sections fail to show the basin image probably due to its rugged top beneath the shallow water. The boundary contact between the basement with the velocity of about 5200m/s and the basin filling with the velocities of 4300~4700 m/s is unclear. These velocites are calculated from the corresponding shot gathers. Compared with the Haenam Basin, a neighbouring onshore Cretaceous sedimentary basin, we interpret that the new basin includes the volcanics and volcaniclastic sequences deposited in the lacustrine environment. This nonmarine basin was possibly formed as the result of the tectonic movement during the Cretaceous, implying the wide occurrence of the Cretaceous basins over the southern Korean Peninsula as well as its southwestern continental shelf.
