  • The RCS value of maritime ship is indicator of ship's stealth performance and it should be particularly measured for navy ship to ensure survivability on the battlefield. In the design phase of the navy ship, a RCS prediction should be performed to reduce RCS value and achieve ROC(Required Operational Capability) of the ship through configuration control. In operational phase, the RCS value of the ship should be measured for verifying the designed value and obtaining tactical data to take action against enemy missile. During the measurement of RCS for the ship, ship motion can be affected by roll and pitch in accordance with sea state, which should be analyzed into threat elevation from view point of enemy missile. In this paper, we propose a method to measure and analyze RCS of ship in 3-dimensions using a ship motion measuring instrument and a fixed RCS measurement system. In order to verify the proposed method, we conducted a marine experiment using a test ship in sea environment and compared the measurement data with RCS prediction value which is carried by prediction SW($CornerStone^{TM}$) using CAD model of the ship.

  • The effects of various natural antioxidant sources on oxidation of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) and fish diet during storage was determined. Juvenile fish were distributed among 18 flow-through tanks (40 fish per tank). Six experimental diets were prepared in triplicate: control (CT), antitox (AT), green tea extract (GE), fig extract (FE), Haeroc product (HP) and by-product of green tea (BG). The experimental diets were stored at two temperatures: room temperature ($26.8^{\circ}C$) for 14 days and frozen ($-30^{\circ}C$) for 16 weeks. Thirty fish were sampled from each tank at the end of the 8-week feeding trial. Whole bodies of fish were homogenized and stored in a home freezer ($-9.6^{\circ}C$) for 24 weeks. Acid values (AVs) and peroxide values (POVs) of the diets and frozen fish during storage were monitored. AVs of the experimental diets tended to increase with the storage period except for that of the HP diet at room temperature. POVs from FE, CT, and BG diets peaked at day 7 and then decreased through the remainder of the experiment. AVs of the experimental diets and fish increased with time at $-30^{\circ}C$ and $-9.6^{\circ}C$. Results of this study show that by-products of green tea and Haeroc product seem to have potential as antioxidants in fish feed to inhibit oxidation of both the feed and fish during storage.

  • The effect of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on maze-learning ability in aged mice was investigated. Aged mice fed a diet deficient in n-3 fatty acid received a semi-purified diet of 0.5, 1 and 2% DHA-ethyl ester (DHA-EE) for 4 months. Maze-learning ability was assessed at 3 months after the start of the experiment. The time required to reach the maze exit and the number of times that a mouse strayed into blind alleys in the maze were measured in 3 trials conducted at 4-day intervals. The time was significantly less in the DHA-EE 0.5% and DHA-EE 2% groups than in the control group (p<0.05). The number of times mice strayed into blind alleys in the maze was significantly lower in the DHA-EE 2% group than in the control group (p<0.05). Mice fed DHA showed increased DHA and decreased level of arachidonic acid (AA) in the brain. These results suggest that the intake of a 2% DHA diet improves learning ability in aged mice, which is associated with a higher DHA content in the brain.

  • Effect of fasting and refeeding on growth and blood chemistry of juvenile olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus L. was investigated when fish achieved compensatory growth. Fish were fed the experimental diet for 6 days a week. Five treatments in triplicate were prepared: C, S1, S2, S3 and S4. Fish in the control group (C) were hand-fed to apparent satiation twice a day. Fish in treatments of S1, S2, S3 and S4 experienced 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks of starvation and were then hand-fed to satiation twice daily during the remaining 7, 6, 5 and 4 weeks of the experiment, respectively. Weight gain of fish in C, S1 and S2 were higher than those of fish in S3 and S4. A significant difference in plasma total protein, glucose, triglyceride, $T_3$ and $T_4$ was observed in between starved and refed fish for the rest periods of the feeding trial. Plasma total protein and $T_3$ of flounder decreased with week of fasting and following correlationships were obtained; Y (Total protein) = -0.13X (week of fasting) + 1.54, $R^2=0.9792$ and $Y(T_3)=-11.48X$ (week of fasting) + 79.57, $R^2=0.8822$, respectively.

  • As part of eco-friendly policies, interest in hydrogen vehicles is growing in the automotive industry to reduce carbon emissions. In particular, it is necessary to investigate the application of aluminum alloy for light weight hydrogen valves among hydrogen supply systems to improve the fuel efficiency of hydrogen vehicles. In this research, we investigated mechanical characteristics of aluminum alloys after hydrogen embrittlement considering the operating environment of hydrogen valves. In this investigation, experiments were conducted with strain rate, applied voltage, and hydrogen embrittlement time as variables that could affect hydrogen embrittlement. As a result, a brittle behavior was depicted when the strain rate was increased. A strain rate of 0.05 mm/min was selected for hydrogen embrittlement research because it had the greatest effect on fracture time. In addition, when the applied voltage and hydrogen embrittlement time were 5 V and 96 hours, respectively, mechanical characteristics presented dramatic decreases due to hydrogen embrittlement.

  • With the development of electronic communication technology, the ship's navigational equipment is being digitized, and it has being studied touch-screen-based navigation user interface. However, due to the influence of environmental factors such as waves, it has a potential problem hazardous marine accident occurs due to incorrect operation, the systematic research in consideration of this be done do not. In this paper, we provide a user interface experimental model to verify the stability that takes into account the external environment of the touch-screen input on. Further, we simulated to verify that the interface of the touch screen, the effect of applying the input delay time and the size of the button is obtained through the experimental model proposed. It will be able to greatly contribute to studies of the interface robust touch screen user errors that can be analyzed by the experimental model is proposed to improve the ship, the overall system stability.

  • To obtain geographical range and growth-kinetics parameters of mottled sake (Beringraja pulchra) populations in the Yellow Sea, three mark-recapture experiments were carried out. Overall, 991 tagged individuals were released, and 4.1% of them were recaptured with the mean release period of 339 d (range, 8-1,420 d) and the mean growth rate of $1.4cm\;mon^{-1}$ (female, $1.5cm\;mon^{-1}$; male $1.3cm\;mon^{-1}$). In the first experiment, 667 individuals were released at Heuksan Island from April to June, 2007-2009, and 30 individuals were recaptured mainly at the north and the north-east coasts of the island, indicating absence of migration to the south of the island. In the second experiment, 323 individuals were released at several fishing grounds scattered in the Yellow Sea in 2010-2013, and 11 individuals were recaptured at points deviated to all directions from the releasing points. As the last, one individual was released with pop-up satellite archival tag at a costal point ($34^{\circ}37.2$'N, $124^{\circ}59.3$'E) off Hong Island on May 21, 2010. The tagged individual migrated to a north-east location ($35^{\circ}50.4$'N, $126^{\circ}03.6$'E) of Eocheong Island by Aug. 25, 2010. The data archived for the three months in the tag indicated that the migration path had depths of 48-80 m and temperature of $12.6-14.4^{\circ}C$. The results indicated that mottled sake populations had a localized habitat ranges at the north of Heuksan Island and the west of Hong Island while growing at the rate of $1.4cm\;mon^{-1}$.

  • This study investigated the distributional pattern of meiobenthos associated with future deep-sea mining in the Korea Deep Ocean Study area present in the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCFZ) located in the southeastern part of the North Pacific Ocean. Standing stocks of meiobenthos were investigated in benthic impact experiment sites (BIS) and Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology long-term monitoring (KOMO) sites during the 2008-2014 annual field survey. A total of 14 taxa of meiobenthos were identified. Nematodes were the most abundant taxon (60-86%). Harpacticoid copepods (5-26%) and benthic foraminifera (1-12%) were also dominant at all sites. The total meiobenthic densities varied from 4 to 150 ind./10 cm2. The mean value of total meiobenthic abundance was higher at BIS than at KOMO sites, but there was no significant difference between the two sites. The mean values of the number of taxa and biomass at BIS and KOMO sites were similar. The mean abundance of nematodes that were the most dominant taxa was also higher at BIS than at KOMO sites. The standing stocks in our study sites were relatively lower than those previously reported at other CCFZ sites. These results seem to reflect a low organic concentration in the study area.

  • Underwater acoustic wave in shallow water is propagated through multipath that has a large delay spread causing Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) and these characteristics deteriorate the performance in the communication system. In order to analyze the communication performance and investigate the correlation with multipath delay spread in a reverberant environment, an underwater acoustic communication experiment using Binary Phase-Shift Keying (BPSK) signals with symbol rates from 100 sym/s to 8000 sym/s was conducted in a 5 × 5 × 5 m3 water tank. The acoustic channels in a well-controlled tank environment had the characteristics of dense multipath delay spread due to multiple reflections from the interfaces and walls within the tank and showed the maximum excess delay of 40 ms or less, and the Root Mean Squared (RMS) delay spread of 8 ms or less. In this paper, the performances of Bit Error Rate (BER) and output Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) were analyzed using four types of communication demodulation techniques. And the parameter, Symbol interval to Delay spread Ratio in reverberant environment (SDRrev), which is the ratio of symbol interval to RMS delay spread in the reverberant environment is defined. Finally, the SDRrev was compared to the BER and the output SNR. The results present the reference symbol rate in which high communication performance can be guaranteed.
