The Internet is now an ubiquitous technology in business and possesses the potential to make the concept of value chain into an attainable reality. We posit that the way the Internet is utilized, the extent of the Internet's impact on business performance, and the extent the firms are prepared to take advantage of the Internet varies from country to country and from industry to industry. Based on data collected from 54 firms in the U.S. and 135 in South Korea, we compared the two countries (U.S. and South Korea) and two major industry groups (manufacturing and service) regarding the pattern of Internet utilization on the Internet from a value chain perspective. The findings show that U.S. companies utilize the Internet more extensively in such areas as human resources management, automation, sales, and advertising than the South Korean counterparts. However, we did not find a statistically significant difference in the way the two countries use the Internet within a value chain model. We also compared Internet practices by industry sector (i.e., service vs. manufacturing) within each country. The results show that firms in the service sector tend to use the Internet more extensively than the manufacturing counterparts in both countries. Particularly in Korea the difference between the sectors was significant in the extent to which they utilized the Internet to support such business activities as inter-organizational alliance, communication, and marketing.
This study classifies the types of spatio-functional differentiation in Korean island areas and analyses typical characters and suggests the development directions by each type. Eup/Myeon-level island areas are classified as six types by the factor analysis and the cluster analysis. First type is the traditional rural center. This type puts emphasis on maintaining phase as the central space and has to maximize development potential of the whole of settlement zone. Second type is the specialized region in manufacturing industry and the qualitative mutual growth of regional industries is able to be suggested. Third type is the specialized region in the neighborhood service provision. This type needs to devise the plan for utilizing potential customers actively and developing into the region specialized in tourism industry. Fourth type is the specialized region in tourism-support service functions. This type has to promote differentiated policies for maintaining amenity infra or value of countryside capital and preservation and utilization of resources by regional features. Fifth type is the fishing industry-dominated region. This type has to promote sustainable fishery development through the policy reflecting regional features and condition. Finally, sixth type is the sluggish region dominated with the traditional agriculture and fishery. This type is needed to aim at developing into the new food production base having the advantage of clean environment by strengthening support in specialized agro-fishery products. The existing researches on spatio-functional differentiation were mostly discussed with respect to land development, but this study highlights the difference in deal with the island areas distinguished from the condition of industry.
As the 4th industrial revolution has been an emerging issue, the government and industry has paid increasing interest to smart factory. The Korean government has made efforts to establish smart manufacturing capabilities of small-to-medium sized firms by providing supports for smart factory. However, the effectiveness of the supports and satisfaction of firms have hardly been analyzed. This study aims to analyze firms' satisfaction by attributes of policy suuports for smart factory and identify priorities for government supports. The results show that 8 out of 11 attributes were one-dimensional and 3 were attractive attributes. Among the 11 attributes, funding support was the top priority. The attributes such as dispatching external experts, consulting for sophistication of smart-factory, and consulting for maintenance and repair were also high priorities. These results imply that firms prefer supports for maintenance and sophistication to adoption or initial establishment of smart factory.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effects of education and training on labor productivity of the leading firms in Busan during the period of 1999~2000. In order to control for firm heterogeneity and the endogeneity problem of education and training, we employed fixed effects model and 2SLS. Our empirical results showed that firms expenditures per capita on education and training were positively correlated with their labor productivity. We also tested whether the effects of education and training on labor productivity vary with firm size or across industries. It is shown that, while firm size makes no statistical differences, the effect of education and training on labor productivity is smaller in service industry than in manufacturing one. From heterogeneous effect of education and training across industries, we could infer that policies to support various education and training programs in service industry are needed to be reinforced to improve the competitiveness of service industry.

In some industries, manufacturing firms' distinctive competences include not only product superiority but also service excellence. For example, in a highly volatile and dynamic market, flexibility and responsiveness are more valued than just the product cost. And sales order processing, in that respect is a very important process. However, previous studies on sale order processing have considered only due-date assignments or dealt with production scheduling to minimize production cost or delivery lead time. Due to recent advances in information technology, a new approach is possible in dealing with sales order processing. For example, RFID(Radio Frequency IDentification) and ubiquitous computing technology adds real time visibility and traceability to supply chain. In this study, we develop a new due-date re-negotiation process for sales order management and propose a new business integration model to support the re-negotiation process based on RFID, ubiquitous computing technology and RosettaNet's PIPs.
The introduction of smart factory digital twins is a concept that has already been proposed to increase productivity in the manufacturing industry through CPS(Cyber Physics System), and has been applied to specific industrial process stages or partially introduced in stages where simulation is required. However, with the recent development of the 4th Industrial Revolution technology, it is receiving attention again along with XR (Extended Reality) technology. However, because there are not many effective cases, this study analyzed the devices, equipment, and technology of the manufacturing process to build a digital twin applying digital threads and synchronized signals and information to control, remote control, and produce intelligent process automation equipment. A platform capable of analyzing information was proposed and developed. Through this, we designed and built an XR content service platform that can support artificial intelligence and developed it to enable control, remote control, and analysis of production information. A possible platform was proposed and developed. We hope that this study will be helpful in conducting research on many cases, and in the future, expanded research on increasing productivity in each part of the process and production is needed through intelligent models.
The international trends in activities of government R&D performance measurement is evolving into evidence-based approach to support the verification of objective policy implementation. The European Commission has been implementing KETs (Key Enabling Technologies) policy that incubates nanotech based emerging technologies to support the fourth industrial revolution/revitalization of high-tech manufacturing, and resulting innovations are quantified by KETs Observatory project. The European Commission also built Innovation Radar system that monitors potentially innovative projects within FP7 and Horizon2020 by data analysis. The United States is also upgrading its Federal RePORTER system to quantitatively monitor federal R&D investments with outcomes (including nanotechnology). In the field of Korean nanotechnology, basic statistical data by analyzing NTIS (National Science & Technology Information Service) information is applied in policy field. Developing innovation measurement methodology beyond basic statistical analysis is an international policy issue, and a long-term R&D investment area of a government. The objective of this model study is to quantify the innovation potential of nano R&D investments conducted by Korea government, using input-output based efficiency measurement model and NTIS (National Science & Technology Information Service) that is comprehensive data portal for national R&D investments/outcomes including nanotechnology.

Six sigma management has obtained good results in manufacturing and service industry as a new innovation approach to improve the enterprise-wise quality processes. However, there are lacks of implementation cases in the construction industry and furthermore, a results from a few cases applied is not successful enough to draw an attraction against the six sigma method. The main goal of this paper is to provide a comparative study regarding the pre-requisite conditions for the application of six sigma to the construction industry. Then, it present a generic procedure model that can support the introduction of six sigma management. Finally, the model is verified through the case study and lessons learned form a case are presented.
The shipbuilding industry is facing the various problems of less demand and oversupply owing to the global economic crisis and the increase in shipbuilding countries. Shipyards of the industry are making effort to strengthen their ability to handle the crisis via a smartwork technology for flexible working environment. In this study, we developed a smartwork system that manages the information in shipbuilding process with mobile devices such as smart phones and tablet PCs. To successfully apply the developed smartwork system to shipyards, we analyzed several best practices and management tasks of the shipbuilding processes. The developed system was designed by CBD approach that is a branch of service-oriented software engineering for reusability and flexibility on the system. As it is designed considering the flexible working environment, it supports to increase their productivity by reducing the time required to carry out tasks and by increasing the mobility required to manage work performance in field of shipyards.

QoS is a subject of high interest for successful deployment of various services in a home gateway and the gateway is possible to support QoS by installing existing queuing disciplines, which control the outgoing traffic to guarantee only QoS of the traffic. But m the home gateway it is also important to guarantee QoS of the incoming traffic. This paper proposes an adaptive control of the traffic to guarantee QoS of incoming traffic into the home gateway. In the proposed method, the upper limit of the available bandwidth of sending rate varies with receiving rate. And the proposed method makes the gap between the allocated rate and the actual service rate of the traffic narrow. Some experiments on a test bed show that the proposed method is valid.
