  • Shop floor control systems (SFCS) are used to make real-time planning and scheduling decisions to optimize the efficiency of manufacturing shops. These shops exhibit a non-linear, dynamic evolution caused by 1) the concurrent flows of disparate parts following complex routings, 2) a variety of machines that breakdown at random times, 3) stochastic arrivals of new parts with different priorities, and 4) jobs that have probabilistic processing times and transportation times. Because of their ability to capture that evolution faithfully, simulation models are often used in the aforementioned decisions. In this paper, various types of decision-making problems encountered in a shop floor have been investigated and categorized into process related problems and resource related problems for shop floor simulation.

  • Keeping the promised delivery date for a customer order is crucial for a company to promote customer satisfaction and generate further businesses. For this, a company should be able to quote the delivery date that can be achieved with the capacity available on the shop floor. In a dynamic make-to-order manufacturing environment, the problem of determining a delivery date for an incoming order with consideration of resource capacity, workload, and finished-product inventory can hardly be solved by an analytical solution procedure. This paper considers a situation in which a delivery date for a customer order is determined based on a job schedule, and presents the SimTriD algorithm that provides the best scheduling for determining a delivery date of customer order through the job schedule that efficiently utilizes manufacturing resources with consideration of interacting factors such as resource utilization, finished-product inventory, and due date.

  • Organization change projects such as Business Process Redesign(BPR) have been implemented by many firms for enhancing their organizational performance. However, management is reluctant to initiate these projects due to enterprise-wide impact and steeper project cost than the traditional system development projects. Thus, there emerges a need to accurately assess the value of the redesigned organizational process for the successful implementation of BPR projects. The purpose of this study is to assess the value of process redesign in the point of resource utilization and allocation, and cycle time and cost reduction. The candidate process and the design alternatives are identified from organizational requirements analysis. The variables and their relations are defined to perform task activity analysis, bottleneck analysis, cycle cost analysis, and resource utilization analysis. A Case study of a manufacturing company indicates that the assessments method proposed in this study is a promising approach to identify the business alternative process that lead to the highest organizational performance.

  • This paper explored strategic types of Korean SMEs in manufacturing industries and investigated key differences among strategic types by analysing firm size, product market, technological capabilities and performances. According to previous studies, this papers categorized SMEs into four strategic types-technological innovative SMEs, multi-product SMEs, capital-intensive SMEs, and OEM-based SMEs types. Based on the empirical survey from 1,077 Korea SMEs in diverse industries, there are significant differences among strategic types on the key characteristics including product market, resource capability and performance. Finally this paper suggested implications for the studies on SMEs and managerial and policy directions to support SMEs.

  • The objective of this paper is to introduce to development of resource planning system of footwear manufacturing. The system development is to be done separately by module and each of which makes interface possible. And the final goal of the system development is to combine those modules to be ERP system covering all works from order to make, shipment, accounting. First, in this case study, introduce analysis of existing business flow and design of standard business process for development of systems. Second, describe in and out of the standard business process for shoes production and information management. Third, basic structure and design of the total system flow, configuration of completed 6 sub-systems of developing total 13 sub-system are presented. Fourth, function of software modules and principal algorithm and basic data structuring techniques o the 6 sub-systems are explained. Finally, hereafter implementation and development plans are presented.

  • Currently for exploring marine resources, After confirming the location of the resources by controlling search equipment and sensor module, the method which collects sample of searched resources and analyzes the quality and a contents of the resources in research vessel is been applying. This search method is structure which analyzes an ingredient in ship and decides the quality of the resources. And real-time processing for an effective resources search is been demanding. Therefore we have developed a exploration system of marine resource that can display the type feature of resources by Graphic User Interface.

  • Time to market and cost-efficient production are some of the challenge that manufacturing industries face. Modern methods of engineering can't help such organizations attain competitive advantage. To help these situations, MEMPHIS (Middleware for Exchanging Machinery and Product Data in Highly Immersive Systems) was introduced as an approach that enables VE (Virtual Engineering) and links engineering applications with VR (Virtual Reality) solutions. Thus an environment is provided to implement virtual design reviews and enable the application of virtual prototyping methods. However MEMPHIS could just handle Product data for virtual design review and simulation. In this paper, we newly define and develop the extended MEMPHIS that enables virtual manufacturing with Process, Resource and Plant data as well as Product data.

  • In this paper, we investigate the influence of factors on the firm, industry, and country levels on the new product development performance (NPD) of manufacturing firms in advanced economies. The resource-based view, industrial organization theory and institutional theory have established that firm-, industry- and country-level factors are all relevant for the NPD of firms. However, little is known about the relative importance of factors at the three different levels across countries, as prior studies on firms' NPD have focused on specific countries and levels of analysis. Our analysis of survey data from 1,437 manufacturing firms in nine advanced OECD countries shows that while firm-level factors are generally better predictors of firms' innovativeness than either industry- or country-level factors, the results strongly differ across countries, indicating that the relative importance of antecedents of innovativeness is country-specific rather than universal.

  • This paper presents a method for constructing model of manufacturing processes for simulation and design of the discrete control logic. The models represent the discrete vent evolution of the system as well as features of the underlying continues processes, for applications such as discrete parts manufacture and assembly, the process is decomposed into operations and for each operation the required resources and associated discrete resource slates are Identified. The structure of the discrete-level control is modeled by modified Perti nets which are synthesized from single resource activity cycles. Construction of nets provides discrete control logic with guaranteed properties based on extended Petri nets theory, for illustration, the proposed method is applied to the high-level discrete control of a two-robotic assembly cell.
