  • Design of manufacturing process, in general, facilitates the creation of new process that may potentially harm the workers. Design of safety-guaranteed manufacturing process is, therefore, very important since it determines the ultimate outcomes of manufacturing activities involving safety of workers. This study discusses application of discrimination information (cross entropy) to safety assessment of manufacturing processes. The idea is based on the general principles of design and their applications. An example of Cartesian robotic movement is given.

  • In Korean clothing industry, most of the manufactures produce garments by subcon-tractors partially or entirely. It is very often that the design part is remote from production part and there is miscommunication between these two parts resulting dissatisfaction to both. Therefore it is very important to communicate the manufacturing information clearly and quickly to produce garments exactly the design part intended. Also to automate the clothing out how to produce and use the information objectively and efficiently. As a first step of moving to automation, the purpose of the research is to find out how manufacturing information and data are communicated in clothing manufacturing at present. In order to follow the information flow of a cer-tain manufacturer, the case study method was used. The case study samples were 12 clothing firms of 13 brands. The results and suggestions are as follows :- 1. A manufacturing information is communicated through paper documents such as“Production Order”, sample and patterns. At present, a production order sheet is the most efficient communication media, which comprises most of the information being communicated. 2. A manufacturing information comprises control information on the product, design in-formation, pattern information, cutting information, material information, sewing information, production schedule information, quality control information, costing information and information about the subcontractors. 3. A manufacturing is not quite objective except pattern information and cutting information which is presented by CAD systems. The communication of design information and sewing information should be somehow more objective. 4. There is not much information from a subcontractor. Considering that a subcontractor is the other partener of the communication, more information from the subcontractor is required for both benefit. 5. A designer produce most of the manufacturing information, but the information is communicated through a production manager to the subcontractor. The difference between the information maker and information communicator can cause any miscommunication. In future automated manufacturing, it will be possible for the designer to communicate to the manufacturer directly from the early stage of designing.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the status of manufacturing information system (MIS) which has been introduced to enhance the manufacturing competitiveness in Korea and to enable statistical comparison of whether there are significant differences in implementing manufacturing information system between large companies and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The result of the empirical test of 105 manufacturing companies in Korea showed that the utilization and satisfaction of MIS in large companies are significantly greater than those in SMEs.

  • Manufacturing firms have adapted seriously the Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) techniques which consider concurrently all factors related to the product development by using effective communications and sharing of information on product development processes. This study performed modelling and characterizing the data related to product manufacturing information for Design for Manufacture(DFM) evaluation and analysis. It adapted component-based development method for communicating and managing manufacturing information among distributed manufacturing organizations. Introducing component-based development offers safety and speed to network based system. This development using Unified Modelling Language(UML) provides efficient way for reconstruction and distribution of applications. Also, the integration of database and component into the internet environment enables to communicate and manage effectively manufacturing information for DFM evaluation and analysis at any place in the world. Therefore this system can make it more reasonable that evaluating, analyzing, and effective decision making of product design using DFM technique.

  • Under competitive situation , many small manufacturing companies know that building effective information systems is the best way to get a competition. Therefore . lots of these companies are getting under way of building information systems. But they are having trouble building information systems because of many diffifcult factors like money technologies, education. Comparing to large firms , small manufacturing compaines are short of money and technology to get informatin systems. Considering of the difficulties of small manufacturing companies, organization supporting these companies will be able to play an important role to suggest the guideline to success of getting information systems. Many supporting organizations have instituted a scheme in which they can get valuable information relating to building information systems. This paper is focusing on the role of supporting organizations for information systems of small manufacturing companies. This study finds out what the difficulties of these companies trying to build information systems are and suggests the supporting ways of getting effective information systems.

  • Today's manufacturing enterprise relies heavily on the collaboration and coordination among the distributed manufacturing systems. The effective exchange of the various manufacturing information among the distributed organizations contributes a great deal to their productivity. An Internet-Based Manufacturing Desk is developed for the production of the press dies in the automobile industry in order to solve the manufacturing problems among the distributed organizations, to maintain their smooth and immediate information flow, and to increase their productivity finally. The CBR(Case-Based Reasoning) method is applied to achieve those effects. Using the method, the solutions and methods of the predetermined case-bases are retrieved and applied to solve a newly introduced problem. The developed system is implemented and applied successfully.

  • This paper tried to analyze the collection and management method of shop-floor information for development of digital framework in u-manufacturing. In detail, the shop-floor information collection method through the direct communication with manufacturing devices using network Including RS-232C/422, field bus and ethernet is analyzed and proposed. In case the direct communication is impossible, the information collection method through additional sensors or data acquisition units is analyzed and proposed. Moreover, the collection method through bar code reader or touch screen of operators is analyzed and proposed to act up to machine to man/mobile/machine.
