  • This study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of acupuncture and electroacupuncture for temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). We searched 11 databases to find randomized-controlled trials (RCTs) published between January 2018 and January 2023 that used acupuncture and electroacupuncture to treat patients with TMD. We performed a meta-analysis of 18 RCTs involving 1,109 patients. Nine studies reported that the treatment and control groups showed improvement in the evaluation index post-treatment. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the treatment groups receiving acupuncture combined with manual therapy had significantly improved visual analog scale score and dysfunction index than the control groups receiving manual therapy. Moreover, the treatment groups receiving acupuncture combined with Western medicine had statistically improved maximum mouth opening than the control groups using Western medicine. In conclusion, acupuncture and electroacupuncture have clinical effects on TMD patients. Given that 11 studies were obtained from the Chinese database, a regional bias would be considered. Furthermore, the included studies had high a risk of bias in terms of randomization, concealment, and blinding. Further studies are required to correct these limitations.

  • A 28-year-old woman presented with postpartum pelvic pain. The patient complained severe pain and couldn't walk at all a week after natal. Computed tomography and plain radiography of the pelvis didn't reveal abnormal condition except asymmetrical alignment. Chuna treatment isn't usually applicable to the patient after natal. But we tried Chuna treatment to adjust the asymmetrical alignment of pelvis by half degree of strength. The pelvic pain improved considerably after 2 weeks treatment, so we report this case to emphasize the role of Chuna treatment in the management of postpartum pelvic pain.

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to introduce the types and contents of books related to acupuncture published in North Korea that can be identified in South Korea, and to understand the general characteristics of North Korean acupuncture. Methods : Firstly, we identified books related to acupuncture in the Information Center on North Korea of the National Library of Korea. Specialized books on treatment interventions such as acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, electrotherapy, and manual therapy including acupressure which stimulate acupoints were included in the study. Two authors reviewed the title, table of contents, and contents of each book in the order of publication year for the searched books. Based on this, the characteristics and trends of North Korean acupuncture were comprehensively examined. Results : The included 18 books were published between 1964 and 2018. One of them was considered a Chinese book translated into Korean and published in China, and another was a North Korean book republished by a South Korean publisher. Except for these, all were published in North Korea, two of which were translations of Chinese books. Most of them were books on the theory and clinical applications of acupuncture, but some of them focused on specific treatment interventions such as auricular acupuncture, fire needling, manual therapy, cupping, or electrotherapy. Also, there was a book about the mechanism of acupuncture analgesia in a neurophysiological way. Conclusions : Since the mid-1960s, North Korea has been steadily attempting to combine acupuncture and Western medicine by applying the disease name and classification system of Western medicine, using modern diagnostic technique, and explaining the mechanism of acupuncture based on the latest research. After the 2000s, the standard international acupuncture nomenclature by World Health Organization was used. In recent years, there has been a tendency to publish and widely disseminate specialized books on non-pharmacological treatment such as cupping, electrotherapy, and fire needling.

  • Objectives : This research was projected to verify the validities of needling or moxibustion- acupoints in Illustrated Manual for the Practice of Acupuncture and Moxibustion with the Help of a Bronze Figure bearing Acupuncture Points (IMPAM) and The Classic of Supplementing Life with Acupuncture and moxibustion(CSLAM) Methods; We investigated acupoints which have prohibitions, notices or adverse events when performing needling or moxibustion in IMPAM and CSLAM, then verified it in various literatures and today's medical knowledge. Results; In IMPAM, 2 acupoints were prohibited both needling and moxibustion, 22 acupoints were prohibited from needling and 29 were prohibited from moxibustion. In CSLAM, 3 acupoints were prohibited from both needling and moxibustion, 24 acupoints were prohibited from needling and 31 were prohibited from moxibustion. Most of the prohibition, the notices and adverse events of the acupoints written in IMPAM and CSLAM had medical or philological bases, and the number of them increased compared to that in A-B Classic of Acupunture and Moxibustion(ABCAM). Conslusion : The prohibotions, the notices and the adverse events when performing acupunture or moxibustion in IMPAM and CSLAM reflected the medical experience and knowledge of the time. And the knowledge was increased compared to that in ABCAM.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of hysterectomy on Low Back Pain(LBP) and to describe it through Oriental Medicine theory. Methods : Research was conducted by history taking of 1849 female LBP patients who visited Jaseng Oriental Medicine Hospital. Investigation was focused on the number of patients who underwent hysterectomy, and the length of time developing LBP after the surgery. Results : 178 patients(9.6%) underwent hysterectomy among 1849 patients, and it was higher than general rate of hysterectomy. In Oriental medicine, this result can be explained that it is caused by the lack of water function of spleen(腎水) from the absence of uterus, consequently it makes muscle weak and does harm to Blood and Meridian. Conclusions : History of hysterectomy has a significant influence on the development of LBP.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of spinal cord stimulation acupuncture therapy for lower limb numbness resulting from lumbar herniated intervertebral disc(HlVD). Methods : From 8th August, 2015 to 30th October, 2015, 1 male patient diagnosed as herniated intervertebral disc at L5/S1(Diffuse bulging disc with smooth ventral thecal sac indentation at L5-S1) was treated with spinal cord stimulation acupuncture and general Korean medicine therapy(acupuncture, herbal injection). Numerical Rating Scale(NRS) and Oswestry Disability Index(ODI) were recorded during the treatment. Results : 1. The patient's chief complaints were remarkably improved - Rt. lower limb numbness remained 15% compared before treatment, Rt. lower limb paresthesia and gait disturbance almost disappeared after 25 times of treatment during 3 months. 2. NRS score decreased from 7 to 3, ODI decreased from 16 to 7. Conclusions : This study demonstrates that spinal cord stimulation acupuncture therapy with Korean medicine treatment has notable effect in improving lower limb numbness induced by lumbar HlVD.
