  • Pollution in the rivers has received considerable attention in recent years, particullary with reference to the effect due to increasing concentration of heavy metals. The metals are toxic to the ecosystem as a whole and to man in particular, since he is at the end of a variety of food chains by virture of his varigated diet. In addition, numerous laboratory tests have established that certain metals, such as Cd, pose a threat to a wide variety of aquatic organisms at concentrations as low as a few $\mu$g/1. Before the biological effects of heavy metals in impacted ecosystems can be completely assessed, however it is necessary to provide data on the concentration of heavy metals in such systems. This study was performed to investigate the concentration level of heavy metals in water, fish and sediments from upstream ($S_1-S_4$) to downstream ($S_5-S_9$) of the Mankyung river. Samples of water, fish, and sediments were collected along the tributaries of the Mankyung from September to October in 1987 and analyzed for lead, cadmium, copper, and zinc by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. From the data presented in this study, we can infer that the concentrations of the heavy metals investigated both in water and sediments are similar to those found in literature for unpolluted regions. The results obtained from the analysis of the edible tissue of the C. auratus show low concentration levels of the four heavy metals investigated. We conclude that the area is still relatively unpolluted and recommended continuing the monitoring of heavy metal concentrations to improve our understanding of their cycle in the river environment.

  • The Geum river being used as drinking water sources has contaminated due to inflow of inadequately treated wastewater from the tributaries into the river. The characteristics of water quality in the upper regions showed good grade(BOD<3mg/L) in the Geum river, the Mankyung river and the Dongjin river, while that in the lower regions and the upper region of the Sapkyo river did not achieve the good grade. This resulted in the inflow of domestic, industrial and livestock wastewater not adequately treated by wastewater treatment systems. For lakes, the mouth of the kyungchun lake, the Sapkyo lake and the Yedane lake showed the eutrophication phenaminon with higher COD concentration. In particular, total phosphorus and chlorophyll-a concentration were higher in the Sapkyo lake than other lake.

  • Various Parameters such as stream velocities, discharges, and dispersion coefficients of dissolved solutes were estimated by fitting 1-D nonreactive solute transport model to the time-series chemistry data. This study was done for the reaches of Mankyung River lower than the Jeonju Wastewater Treatment Plant (Jeonju WTP). Korea. Concentrations of inorganic chemicals in the stream waters are strongly influenced by mixing with the chemically distinct effluent from Jeonju WTP. Sulfate, EC. and the total major cation were proved to be nearly conservative in the study area front their relationships with chloride, the conservative chemical species. The solute transport model was constrained to the time-series concentrations for these 4 conservative species. The variations of concentration and discharge of Jeonju WTP were used as input parameters, and the stream velocities, dispersion coefficients, and concentrations and discharges of some inflows were optimized. The differences between the observed arid simulated values for alkalinities and nitrates are inversely correlated and show diurnal fluctuations, indicating the photosynthesis. The parameters obtained front this mode] range from 550 to 774 kcmd (stream discharge at the outlet of the study area), from 0.06 to 0.10 m/sec (flow velocity), and from 0.7 to 6.4 m$^2$/sec (dispersion coefficient). The history of Jeonju WTP discharge was well predicted when optimized, indicating the validity of the model results.

  • To evaluate the water purification capacity of 4 emergent macrophytes in 4 tributaries of Mankyung River, nitrate reductase activity (NRA) and nutrient removal capacity were determined. Higher NRA occurred in emergent macrophytes such as Persicaria thunbergii and Oenanthe iavanica with 7.8 and 5.4 ${\mu}$moi NO$_2$ g$^{-1}$d.wt. h$^{-1}$. respectively. The nitrogen removal capacity of emergent macrophytes displaying higher NRA fell within the range of 0.85 to 1.95 mg g$^{-1}$d.wt. day$^{-1}$ and was higher in the order Phragmites communis > Persicaria thunbergii > Oenanthe iavanica > Zizania latifolia. The phosphorus removal capacity was within the range of 0.07 to 0.12 mg g$^{-1}$d.wt. day$^{-1}$ and was higher in the order Phragmites communis > Oenanthe iavanica > Persicaria thunbergii > Zizania latifolia. In all the domestic, industrial and agricultural wastewaters, Phragmites communis showed the highest nitrogen and phosphorus removal capacity; 1.36 and 0.0088 mg g$^{-1}$d.wt. day$^{-1}$ respectively. Among the 4 macrophytes. Phragmites communis was the most suitable species for water purification in 4 tributaries of Mankyung River.

  • The sewage treatment plants to be built to improve the water quality of the Mankyung River will total 11, of which combined capacity will reach $39,850m^3/day$, and saying in detail, 5 at Gunsan city, 2 at Iksan city, 1 at Kimje city and 3 at Wanju gun, The scenario for water quality improvement was developed, considering the conditions of plant operation ratio and the accomplishment of the water quality target (BOD 4.4 mg/L, T-P 0.356 mg/L) at the end of the watershed of Mankyung B was predicted, making use of QUAL2E model. As a result of prediction using QUAL2E model based on scenarios with 70% and 100% of operation ratio, respectively, at 11 plants in 2010, the water quality at the watershed of Mankyung B was estimated at 4.322 mg/L which was lower than the target of BOD 4.4 mg/L, indicating the target water quality was achieved, when it comes to 70% of operation ratio, But in case of T-P, it was estimated at 0.565 mg/L, which was higher than the target. When it comes to 100% of operation ratio, T-P also was 0.563 mg/L which exceeded the target, 0.356 mg/L. As indicated above, the effect of water quality improvement appeared very insignificant, which was attributable to the limit of small scale sewage treatment plant in total reduction capacity. Hence, the measures for additional reduction in a bid to achieve the target water quality of T-P at the designated location need to be taken, and the measures to build the Sewage treatment facilities at the place where the pollution is significantly caused by T-P appeared to be required as well.

  • To estimate the effects of suspended sediments flowing into the Saemangeum Reservoir on the extent of contamination of the reservoir, the suspended sediments were collected with sediment traps, which were installed from the upstream of the Mankyung and Dongjin Rivers to estuary of the reservoir, respectively, and the sedimentation rates and the chemical characteristics of suspended sediments were analyzed. The sedimentation rates in the Mankyung and Dongjin Rivers were ranged from 0.01~5.06 and $0.01{\sim}8.75kg/m^2/day$, respectively. Those were higher to the upstream of rivers, and were mainly affected by flood events. The concentrations of organic matters were from 3.3 to 9.6 times higher than those in the stream sediments and were higher after flood season, indicating the contaminants come from the non-point sources on the basin. The concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus in the suspended sediments showed the same trend with the organic matters. These results indicate that the suspended sediments from the basin of the Mankyung and Dongjin Rivers are highly contaminated and the countermeasures to manage the sources of contamination on the basin are required to maintain the water quality of the Saemangeum Reservoir.
