As more people share their opinions in online communities, such as Internet portals and social networking services, more opinions are manipulated for the benefit of particular individuals and groups. In particular, when manipulations occur for political purposes, they influence election results as well as government policies and the quality of life. This type of manipulation has targeted the general public, and their analysis and detection has also focused on such manipulation. However, to more efficiently spread propaganda, recent manipulations have targeted common interest groups(e.g., a group of those interested in real estate) and propagated information whose content and style are customized to those groups. This work characterizes such manipulations on common interest groups and proposes method to detect manipulations. To this end, we collected and analyzed opinions posted on 10 common interest groups before and after an election. As a result, we found that manipulations on common interest groups indeed occurred and were gradually increasing toward the election date. We also proposed a detection system that examines individual opinions, their authors, and their collaborators. Using the collected opinions, we demonstrated that the proposed system can accurately classify more than 90% of manipulated opinions and that many of these opinions were posted by multiple collaborators. We believe that regular audits of opinions using the proposed system can quickly isolate manipulations and decrease their impact. Moreover, the proposed features can be used to identify manipulations in domains other than politics.
Although financial information is a great influence upon determining of the group which use them, detection of management fraud and earning manipulation is a difficult task using normal audit procedures and corporate credit evaluation processes, due to the shortage of knowledge concerning the characteristics of management fraud, and the limitation of time and cost. These limitations suggest the need of systemic process for !he effective risk of earning manipulation for credit evaluators, external auditors, financial analysts, and regulators. Moot researches on management fraud have examined how various characteristics of the company's management features affect the occurrence of corporate fraud. This study examines financial characteristics of companies engaged in fraudulent financial reporting and suggests a model and system for detecting GAAP violations to improve reliability of accounting information and transparency of their management. Since the detection of management fraud has limited proven theory, this study used the detecting method of outlier(upper, and lower bound) financial ratio, as a real-field application. The strength of outlier detecting method is its use of easiness and understandability. In the suggested model, 14 variables of the 7 useful variable categories among the 76 financial ratio variables are examined through the distribution analysis as possible indicators of fraudulent financial statements accounts. The developed model from these variables show a 80.82% of hit ratio for the holdout sample. This model was developed as a financial outlier detecting system for a financial institution. External auditors, financial analysts, regulators, and other users of financial statements might use this model to pre-screen potential earnings manipulators in the credit evaluation system. Especially, this model will be helpful for the loan evaluators of financial institutes to decide more objective and effective credit ratings and to improve the quality of financial statements.
The detection of products with manipulated reviews has received widespread research attention, given that a truthful, informative, and useful review helps to significantly lower the search effort and cost for potential customers. This study proposes a method to recognize products with manipulated online customer reviews by examining the sequence of each review's sentiment, readability, and rating scores by product on randomness, considering the example of a Russian online retail site. Additionally, this study aims to examine the association between brand awareness and existing manipulation with products' reviews. Therefore, we investigated the difference between well-known and unknown brands' products online reviews with and without manipulated reviews based on the average star rating and the extremely positive sentiment scores. Consequently, machine learning techniques for predicting products are tested with manipulated reviews to determine a more useful one. It was found that about 20% of all product reviews are manipulated. Among the products with manipulated reviews, 44% are products of well-known brands, and 56% from unknown brands, with the highest prediction performance on deep neural network.
Online communities, such as Internet portal sites and social media, have become popular since they allow users to share opinions and to obtain information anytime, anywhere. Accordingly, an increasing number of opinions are manipulated to the advantage of particular groups or individuals, and these opinions include falsified product reviews and political propaganda. Existing detection systems are built upon the characteristics of manipulated opinions for one particular time period. However, manipulation tactics change over time to evade detection systems and to more efficiently spread information, so detection systems should also evolve according to the changes. We therefore propose a system that helps observe and trace changes in manipulation tactics. This system classifies opinions into clusters that represent different tactics, and changes in these clusters reveal evolving tactics. We evaluated the system with over a million opinions collected during three election campaigns and found various changes in (i) the times when manipulations frequently occur, (ii) the methods to manipulate recommendation counts, and (iii) the use of multiple user IDs. We suggest that the operators of online communities perform regular audits with the proposed system to identify evolutions and to adjust detection systems.

In the current era of digital technology, and with the help of existing software, digital photo manipulation is becoming easier and faster. One example of this is the development of powerful image processing software that makes it easy for a digital image to be manipulated and edited. It is therefore very important to protect and maintain public trust in digital images. Several methods have been developed to detect image manipulation. In this paper, we compare two methods for detecting image duplication due to copy-move actions, namely the polar coordinate system and the histogram of oriented gradients methods. The former is a method based on the transfer of a Cartesian image to a polar form, making it easy to tell whether there are objects that have undergone a copy/move in an image, while the latter is a method for retrieving information related to the distribution, which uses a target in the local area as a tool to represent the shape of the target. We compare the accuracy, speed and memory usage of these two methods.

We present a vision-based hand gesture recognition system for object manipulation in virtual space. Most conventional hand gesture recognition systems utilize a simpler method for hand detection such as background subtractions with assumed static observation conditions and those methods are not robust against camera motions, illumination changes, and so on. Therefore, we propose a statistical method to recognize and detect hand regions in images using geometrical structures. Also, Our hand tracking system employs multiple cameras to reduce occlusion problems and non-synchronous multiple observations enhance system scalability. Experimental results show the effectiveness of our method.

The manipulation of Boolean functions is a fundamental part of computer science, and many problems in the design and testing of digital systems can be expressed as a sequence of operations. It is mainly a paper of our research on the techniques of Boolean function manipulation using Binary Decision Diagram(BDDs) and their applications for VLSI CAD System. In many practical applications related to digital system design, it is a basic technique to use ternary-valued functions. In this paper, we discuss the methods for representing logical values.

Thanks to web development today, we can easily access online news via various media. As much as it is easy to access online news, we often face fake news pretending to be true. As fake news items have become a global problem, fact-checking services are provided domestically, too. However, these are based on expert-based manual detection, and research to provide technologies that automate the detection of fake news is being actively conducted. As for the existing research, detection is made available based on contextual characteristics of an article and the comparison of a title and the main article. However, there is a limit to such an attempt making detection difficult when manipulation precision has become high. Therefore, this study suggests using a verifying article to decide whether a news item is genuine or not to be affected by article manipulation. Also, to improve the precision of fake news detection, the study added a process to summarize a subject article and a verifying article through the summarization model. In order to verify the suggested algorithm, this study conducted verification for summarization method of documents, verification for search method of verification articles, and verification for the precision of fake news detection in the finally suggested algorithm. The algorithm suggested in this study can be helpful to identify the truth of an article before it is applied to media sources and made available online via various media sources.
A signal processing algorithm is proposed for end point detection which is used commonly in accelerometers-based pattern recognition problem. In the conventional method, end points are detected by manual manipulation with an additive button or algorithm based on statistical computation and highpass filtering to cause critical time delay and difficulty for parameters optimization. As an solution, we propose a focused Time Lagged Feedforward Network(TLFN) with respect to a differential signal of acceleration, which is widely applied for time series forecasting. The simple experiment is conducted with handwriting and the detection performance and response characteristic of the proposed algorithm is tested and analyzed.

In a real-time indoor place recognition system using image features detection, specific markers included in input image should be detected exactly and quickly. However because the same markers in image are shown up differently depending to movement, direction and angle of camera, it is required a method to solve such problems. This paper proposes a technique to extract the features of object without regard to change of the object scale. To support real-time operation, it adopts SURF(Speeded up Robust Features) which enables fast feature detection. Another feature of this system is the user mark designation which makes possible for user to designate marks from input image for location detection in advance. Unlike to use hardware marks, the feature above has an advantage that the designated marks can be used without any manipulation to recognize location in input image.
