  • This paper describes the force display system which presents feel information to the operator through manipulating a virtual tool with a master arm in the simulated environment. The movement of a tool grasped by the operator, which is modeled as a circle or a square is displayed in the graphic screen of a computer. When the tool contacts with the virtual environment, the operator is forced to feel contact and the feature of the virtual environment through torque control of the master arm. Contact situations are modeled as close as to the reality considering the friction, and multiple contacts. Several experients are conducted and the effectiveness of the developed system is confirmed.

  • This paper presents a suboptimal Kalman filter design method for the problem of tracking a maneuvering target. The design method is essentially based on linear target dynamics and linear-like structured measurements called pseudomeasurements. The pseudomeasurements are obtained by manipulating the original nonlinear measurements algebraically. The resulting filter has computational advantages over other filters with similar performance. Monte Carlo computer simulation results are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed suboptimal filter associated with the target acceleration model.

  • Communications, data storage or computation by manipulating the optical signals have the strong advantages over the traditional electronic circuits in regard to the data handling speed and capacity. Effective manipulation of the optical signals, however, requires materials of large nonlinear coefficients and of fast response time. Polymeric materials are one of the promising materials to meet the requirements for nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. (omitted)

  • Composite plating is a method of co-depositing fine particles of metallic, non-metallic compound or polymers in the plated layer to improve material properties such as were-resistance, lubrication, or corrosion resistance. Graded Ni-Sic composite coating were produced in this research. Prior to produce Graded Ni-SiC composite coatings, effects of particle size, particle content, pH of electrolyte, temperature, current density, stirring rate on the amount of SiC deposited in the Ni layer were investigated. By manipulating current density and plating time properties of these coating were evaluated by micro-indentation hardness test.

  • With increasing the volume of digital multimedia market, the security and multimedia content protection issues are arising. Interest in H.264/AVC is emerging and special features in H.264/AVC element stream must be considered. We developed a new algorithm which scrambles and descrambles H.264/AVC element stream in compressed domain using manipulating CABAC initialization table and DCT coefficients. Extensive experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm is effective and promising.

  • We introduce a new electrode structure for the patterned vertical alignment (PVA) mode, which has a lower color-shift at large viewing angle than the one-domain VA mode. By manipulating the period of electrode structure, we can make more multi-domains and use the existing fabrication processes without having to use additional materials.

  • In 3D computer graphics, fractal techniques have been applied to terrain models. Even though fractal models are convenient way to get the data of terrain models, it is not easy to gain the final results by manipulating the data of terrain model. However, by using the object oriented programming techniques, we could reduce the effort of programming job to find the final result. In this paper, a set of classes made by object oriented programming technique is presented. To show the results, the data of a terrain model were made by a fractal technique, namely, the midpoint displacement methods with square lattices of points.

  • In this contribution, we attempted a theoretical analysis on the validity of the widely-accepted idea that rough and singular surfaces can coexist in a crystal at equilibrium. By manipulating the Cahn and Hoffman capillarity vector, the conclusion that a crystal at equilibrium should be composed either of singular surfaces or of rough ones was reached.

  • A methodology that determines the optimal shutdown time of a nuclear power plant is suggested. The shutdown time is decided considering the trade off between the cost of accident and the loss of profit due to the early shutdown. We adopt the bayesian approach in manipulating the model parameter that predicts the accidents. We build decision tree models and apply dynamic programming approach to decide whether to shutdown immediately or operate one more period. The branch parameters in decision trees are updated by bayesian approach. We apply real data to this model and provide the cost of accidents that guarantees the immediate shutdown.
