  • The evolution in the use of the elevator and the iron frame to build ever-taller buildings that would eventually be called "skyscrapers" is still somewhat shrouded in the mist of history. This two-part paper is an attempt to document the significant persons and events in that evolution, showing that these had a greater continuity than that previously recorded. In this first part, I discuss how the exploitation of the elevator in the design of buildings allowed "skyscrapers" to be built taller than the five-six story limit imposed by stairways, so that their owners could include more and more rental square footage needed to offset the increasing cost of Manhattan real estate. The use of iron framing for the interior framing in these taller buildings would reduce the amount of square footage lost to construction, thereby also increasing the rental return from the building. By the start of the Great Depression of the 1870s in 1873, New York architects had erected two ten-storied skyscrapers.

  • After the 1884 Home Insurance building in Chicago and 1889 Tower building in New York, 15 Park Row became the tallest building in the USA in 1899 and it held this record for nine years. Completed just before the arrival of the 20th century, this building deserves to be recognized for the sophistication of its architecture with respect to contextual understanding of the 19th century historic texture in Lower Manhattan, its uniquely economical floor plans, and its use of natural ventilation and daylight. The compositional techniques using the proportional analysis of its context reflect the highest level of architectural education of its time by its architect Robert H. Robinson. In addition, it also offers a unique glimpse to the state-of-the-art technology of its time regarding its structure, its use of movement systems that was capable of serving 4000 users.

  • This paper proposes an efficient matching algorithm based on ASIFT (Affine Scale-Invariant Feature Transform) which is fully invariant to affine transformation. In our approach, we proposed a method of reducing similar measure matching cost and the number of outliers. First, we combined the Manhattan and Chessboard metrics replacing the Euclidean metric by a linear combination for measuring the similarity of keypoints. These two metrics are simple but really efficient. Using our method the computation time for matching step was saved and also the number of correct matches was increased. By applying an Optimized Random Sampling Algorithm (ORSA), we can remove most of the outlier matches to make the result meaningful. This method was experimented on various combinations of affine transform. The experimental result shows that our method is superior to SIFT and ASIFT.

  • This study was conducted to investigate a morphological trait in 294 rice accessions including Korean breeding lines. We also carried out a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to detect significant single nucleotide polymorphism markers and candidate genes affecting major agronomic traits. A Manhattan plot analysis of GWAS using morphological traits showed that phenotypic and statistical significance was associated with a chromosome in each group. The significance of SNPs that were detected in this study was investigated by comparing them with those found previously studied QTL regions related to agronomic traits. As a result, SNP (S8-19815442), which is significant with regard to leaf angle, was located in the known QTL regions. To observe gene mutations related to leaf angle in a candidate gene, Os08g31950, its sequences were compared with sequences in previously selected rice varieties. In Os08g31950, a single nucleotide mutation occurred in one region. To compare relative RNA expression levels of candidate gene Os08g31950, obtained from GWAS analysis of 294 rice accessions and related to lateral leaf angle, we investigated relative levels by selecting 10 erect leaf angle varieties and 10 horizontal leaf angle varieties and examining real-time PCR. In Os08g31950, a high level of expression and various expression patterns were observed in all tissues. Also, Os08g31950 showed higher expression levels in the erect leaf angle variety group and higher expression rates in the leaf than in the root. The candidate gene detected through GWAS would be useful in developing new rice varieties with improved yield potential through future molecular breeding.

  • Since Modern Movement flexibility has been one of the most attractive words in architecture. However, "overprovision first, division later" has been the most prevailing design method for spatial flexibility, and many of buildings designed for flexible use are practically quite inflexible due to insufficient building systems or/and irresponsible planning. There have been two dominant strategies to achieve architectural flexibility: multi-functionality and polyvalence. These two approaches, which point contradictory directions, actually reflect the difficulty in providing a proper form of architectural flexibility. Multi-functionality can afford changeable environments with satisfying spatial conditions; however it lacks tolerance to accommodate other uses but intended functions by architects. Meanwhile, flexibility by a polyvalent form relies on the vague anticipation of user's various interpretations. In this study by looking up these two different standpoints and historical precedents flexibility in architecture is carefully scrutinized focused on the contradiction, and as an alternative for architectural flexibility contextual relations is proposed. Unlike both multi-functionality and polyvalence, which produce flexibility by changing its own properties, manipulating contextual relations infuses flexibility into space by changing the properties of a building, not of its individual room. By using this contextual relations method, a community-centered school in Manhattan, NY, which was in danger of being closed because of its academic failure, is represented as a flexible space.

  • The operation planning of transports used to move blocks is the one of key factors. Furthermore, reducing the running time through the effective plan contributes to pulling forward the whole logistic process of the shipyard and substantially saving the fuel consumption of itself as well. The past researches of the transporter focused on finding only the shortest distances, so called, Manhattan distance. However, these searching approaches cannot help having the significant difference in the real operational time and distance with the minimum cost approach which considers the speed retardation for turns or safety at the intersection. This study suggests the noble transporter's operational model which could take account of the consuming operational time around the crossroads on the shipyard. Concretely, the proposed method guarantees the minimization of transporters' turns and passage number which are huge burdensome to the operation time and the whole planning of transports with the given period. Resultantly, this paper is willing to explain the appropriateness of our approach, compared with the previous ones.

  • This study is on Buckminster Fuller, who is generally known as a structure engineering architect, and his influences. Fuller's radical and utopian ideas and designs were regarded as 'paper architecture'. But considering today's high cost of energy and the limited natural resources, Fuller's Dymaxion theory must be re-evaluated. Fuller's influences on the contemporary architecture are summarized as follows. 1) His idea of controlling the environment through the use of technology influenced today's 'High-Tech' architects. Architecture is no-longer designed purely by its formal character, but becomes a tool of investigating environmental significance of modern technology. 2) Through systemizing mechanical equipment, Dymaxion House prototype, and aggregation of high-tech mechanical equipments, influenced Archigram & Metabolist's capsule idea. It is expressed as a plug-in module equipment of 'High-Tech' architecture which has flexible interior with mechanical exterior image. 3) Megastructure. The Manhattan dome project gave an influence to many engineer/architects who tried to achieve an ideal artificial environment. This is in connection to 1960's utopian projects. Today's megastructures show new possibilities in urbanism and architecture. Fuller's comprehensive idea of humans living in harmony in the universe shows possibilities not only in structural engineering, but in solving various problems that confront today's architecture.
