  • Tropical hard wood produces a number of extracts, especially hot-water extracts. The lignin content in the two kinds of bangkirai and red lauan belonging to genus Shorea, was as high as in temperate zone soft wood, mangrove wood of genus Rhizophara contained it on the same level as temperate zone hard wood and keruing of genus Dipterocarpus was in between the two kinds of bangkirau and red lauan, and keruing wood. The xylose content of saccharose composition in the tree of genus Shorea, was as low as in needle-leaved trees, mangrove wood contained it on the same level as broad-leaved trees and the xylose content in keruing wood was in between the above two kinds of wood. The total retrieving rate of alditol acetate acetificated with sulphuric acid and acetic anhydride, did not reach 100%, even if it was supplemented. There was no difficulty in analyzing alditol immediately after acetification but, when it was left for four or five days, the acetificated alditol acetate was dissolved. The pyridine alditol acetificated with pyridine and acetic anhydride, showed the same result.

  • We attempted to estimate the carbon accumulation of Hibiscus hamabo and Paliurus ramosissimus, semimangroves native to Jeju Island, by remote sensing and to build an artificial intelligence model that predicts its spatial variation with climatic factors. The aboveground carbon accumulation of semi-mangroves was estimated from the aboveground biomass density (AGBD) provided by the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) lidar upscaled using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) extracted from Sentinel-2 images. In Jeju Island, carbon accumulation per unit area was 16.6 t C/ha for H. hamabo and 21.1 t C/ha for P. ramosissimus. Total carbon accumulation of semi-mangroves was estimated at 11.5 t C on the entire coast of Jeju Island. Random forest analysis was applied to predict carbon accumulation in semi-mangroves according to environmental factors. The deviation of aboveground biomass compared to the distribution area of semi-mangrove forests in Jeju Island was calculated to analyze spatial variation of biomass. The main environmental factors affecting this deviation were the precipitation of the wettest month, the maximum temperature of the warmest month, isothermality, and the mean temperature of the wettest quarter. The carbon accumulation of semi-mangroves predicted by random forest analysis in Jeju Island showed spatial variation in the range of 12.0 t C/ha - 27.6 t C/ha. The remote sensing estimation method and the artificial intelligence prediction method of carbon accumulation in this study can be used as basic data and techniques needed for the conservation and creation of mangroves as carbon sink on the Korean Peninsula.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop strategy for successful ecotourism in Sundarbans, Bangladesh, based on studying and explaining the ecotourism destinations success factors in already developed successful ecotourism mostly in developing countries. This thesis will analyze the economic potentiality of Sundarbans as an ecotourism spots of Bangladesh and its proper utilizations to enhance ecotourism as a profitable approach for economic growth of Bangladesh. The findings of the study are the current condition of Sundarbans and some applicable recommendations according to the needs.

  • Nypa fruticans Wurmb is a species of palm, which is widely distributed in the mangrove forest of Southeast Asia. Various parts of N. fruticans has been used as a traditional medicinal plant. However, the physiological activities of N. fruticans has not yet been clarified well. Therefore, in this study, the 50% ethanol extract and its aqueous and ethyl acetate fractions of young shoots of N. fruticans were investigated for their antioxidant, cytoprotective effect, and antimicrobial activities. Every sample possessed very high free radical and various ROS scavenging capacities assessed by employing different in vitro assays such as $DPPH^{\cdot}$, $O_2^{{\cdot}-}$, ${\cdot}OH$, and $^1O_2$ scavenging activities. Based on these results, the cytoprotective effect was investigated using the oxidative hemolysis of erythrocyte. We found that the extract and fractions provide a greater protective effect compared with (+)-${\alpha}$-tocopherol. Furthermore, antimicrobial activities were confirmed against skin pathogens by broth microdilution assay. The ethyl acetate fraction had much higher antimicrobial activities than methyl paraben against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans. Taken together, our results indicated that the young shoots of N. fruticans may have the potential role as a natural active ingredient through their antioxidant, cytoprotective effect, and antimicrobial activities.

  • The property of four tropical hardwoods were analyzed. xylans, extracted with 24% of potassium hydroxide and purified according to ethanol titration procedure, were examined for Pn, the uronic acid, methoxyl groups and acetyl groups content. Only mangrove, whose xylan content is similar to that of hardwoods in the temperature zone, had the ratio of units of xylose residue to the units of uronic acid residue as high as that of hardwoods in the temperature zone. Content of methoxyl groups showed the same result as uronic acid residue content. Various hemicellulose including D-xylose residue were contained in xylans extracted by D M S O. Acetyl groups content was compressed of 5.4% of M D X and 6.8% of R D X. Xylans unextracted by D M S O had acetyl groups. Pn measured by the viscosity method was about 200 and similar to the hardwood xylans of temperature zone. DPn calculated by uronic acid residue was similar to that of tropical zone.
