  • The purpose of this study was to qunatatively analyze the stress patterns induced in the abutment, superstructure, supporting bone and to determine the deflection of abutment and superstructure by appling occlusal force to natural teeth supported fixed prostheses and implant-supported fixed prostheses. The analysis has been conducted by using the two dimensional finite element method. The implant and natural tooth-supported bridge has a first molar pontic supported by mandibular second bicuspid and implant posterior retainer, which were rigidly(Model A) or flexible(Model B). The natural teeth-supported bridge has a first molar pontic supported by mandibular second bicuspid and second molar, which were rigidly splinted together(Model C). 63.5kg(Load P1) of localized load on central fossa of first molar pontic and 24kg(Load P2) of distributed load on each occlusal surface were applied respectively. 1. The coronal portion of premolar pontic and posterior abutment in fixed partial denture deflected inferiorly in order of Model B, Model C and Model A under Load P1 and Load P2. 2. Mesial displacement of the coronal portion of premolar showed in Model A, Model B and Model C under Load P1, but mesial displacement of that in Model B and distal displacement of that in Model A and Model C showed under Load P2. 3. Mesial displacement of the coronal portion of the pontic and distal displacement of the coronal portion of posterior abutment showed in Model A, Model B and Model C under Load P1 and Load P2. Displacement in the case of Model B was greater than that of Model A and Model C. 4. In the case Model A under Load P1 and Load P2, high stress apically was concentrated in the mesiocervical portion of the posterior abutment than in the disto-cervical portion of the premolar. 5. In the case of Model B under Load P1 and Load P2 high stress was concentrated in the case of the premolar than in that of posterior abutment and high stress especially was concentrated in the connected portion of pontic and posterior abutment. 6. In the case of Model C under Load P1 and Load P2, high stress was concentrated in the distal area of the cornal portion of premolar and the mesial area of the coronal portion of posterior abutment, and stress pattern was anteroposterially symmetric around the pontic. 7. Load P1 and Load P2 compared, stress magnitude was different but stress pattern was similar in Model A, Model B and Model C. 8. Under Load P1 and P2, stress magnitude in the mesial distal portion and the portion of root apex of the posterior abutment was in order of Model B, Model A and Model C.

  • The clinical and radiographic features of 655 congenitally missing teeth were studied with full mouth periapical radiograms and/or pantomograms from 368 persons visited the Department of Oral Radiology, Infirmary of Dentistry, Kyung Hee University during January 1981 to December 1989. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The prevalence of congenitally missing teeth was revealed to be 8.75% in total examined persons, and there was a higher prevalence in females (9.5%) than in males (8.0%). 2. The most frequently missing teeth were mandibular second premolars (24.6%), followed by mandibular lateral incisors (21.7%), maxillary second premolars (16.2%), and maxillary lateral incisors (11.5%). 3. There was a higher prevalence in the mandible (60.3%) than in the maxilla (39.7%), and no significant differences between right (49.65%) and left (50.35%) side. 4. In number of congenitally missing teeth per person, 54.6% had one missing tooth, and 32.9% had two missing teeth. 5. In persons with one or two congenitally missing teeth, the most frequently missing tooth was mandibular lateral incisor, and the second premolar was the tooth most frequently missing in those persons with more than three congenitally missing teeth.

  • Thirty eight mandibular second premolars were injected with china ink, decalcified, cleared and used in an in vitro study to determine the number of root canals, the frequency and location of lateral canals, the location of apical foramens, the frequency of apical deltas, and the curvature of root canals. The results were as follows: 1. Most of the teeth demonstrated single canal, but 5.3% of the teeth were found to have bifurcated or trifurcated canals. 2. Of the 40 canals studied, 52.5% of the canals were found to have lateral canals and these ramifications were usually located in the apical third of the root. 3. 7 apical foramens were located directly on the root apex and 31 foramens laterally. 4. 4 canals showed mesial curvature, 20 canals distal curvature, 11 canals buccal curvature, and 8 canals lingual curvature.

  • Purpose : To determine the more valuable information to detect the mandibular canal and the mental foramen in panoramic radiographs of a selected Korean population for the implant. Materials and Methods : This study analysed 288 panoramic radiographic images of patients taken at the Dental hospital of Chosun University retrospectively. Indirect digital panoramic X-ray machine (ProlineXC, PLANMECA, Finland) with processing by using Directview $CR950^@$ (Kodak, U.S.A.) and Direct digital panoramic X-ray machine (Promax, PLANMECA, Finland) were used for all exposures. All images were converted into Dicom format. Results : The common position of the mental foramen was in line with the longitudinal axis of the second premolar (68.1%). The mental foramen was symmetrical in 81.8% of cases. The mandibular canal was not identified at anterior portion and discontinued with the mental foramen in 27.8% of all cases, in 42.4% identified with lower border line continued with the mental foramen, in 14.6% with both upper and lower border lines, and in 15.3% unilaterally identified with lower border line. Conclusion : Clinicians can estimate the upper border line of the mandibular canal from the confirmation of the mental foramen and the lower border line of the mandibular canal symmetrically on the panoramic radiography taken in adjusted midsaggital plane of patient's head.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the anteroposterior length and buccal angle of the anterior loop, and the size and location of the mental foramen using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: 100 CBCT images from 87 adults (43 males and 44 females) ranging in age from 20 to 73 years (average 50 years) with edentulous ridge of the mandibular premolar region were obtained. Axial, sagittal, coronal images were reconstructed from Dental and Block Images of CBCT. The anteroposterior length, shape and buccal angle of the anterior loop, and the size and location of the mental foramen were calculated from reconstructed images of axial, sagittal and coronal CBCT. Results: The anteroposterior length and buccal angle of the mental canal was 4.0${\pm}$1.2mm, 37.8${\pm}$11.60$^{\circ}$respectively. The loop type with straight course was the most common shape of the mental canal. The location of the mental foramen below the apex of the lower second premolar (78%) was the most common. The maximum size of the mental foramen was 4.6${\pm}$1.0 mm in width and 3.0${\pm}$0.6 mm in height. The inner size of the mental canal was 2.6${\pm}$0.6 mm in width and 2.1 mm${\pm}$0.4 mm in height. Conclusion: CBCT is useful to evaluate the anterior loop and mental foramen of the mandibular canal. Safe guideline of 4 mm from the most anterior point of the mental foramen is recommended for implant and surgical treatment. (Korean J Oral Maxillofac Radiol 2009; 39: 81-7)

  • Objectives: This study assessed the shape and anatomical relationship of the mental foramen (MF) to mandibular posterior teeth in an Indian sub-population. Materials and Methods: In total, 475 existing cone-beam computed tomography records exhibiting 950 MFs and including the bilateral presence of mandibular premolars and first molars were assessed. Images were evaluated 3-dimensionally to ascertain the position, shape, and anatomical proximity of MFs to mandibular teeth. The position and shape of MFs were measured and calculated. The Pythagorean theorem was used to calculate the distance between the root apex of the mandibular teeth and the MF. Results: MFs exhibited a predominantly round shape (left: 67% and right: 65%) followed by oval (left: 30% and right: 31%) in both males and females and in different age groups. The root apices of mandibular second premolars (left: 71% and right: 62%) were closest to the MF, followed by distal to the first premolars and mesial to the second premolars. The mean vertical distance between the MF and the nearest tooth apex calculated on sagittal sections was 2.20 mm on the right side and 2.32 mm on the left side; no significant difference was found according to sex or age. The distance between the apices of the teeth and the MF was ≥ 4 mm (left; 4.09 ± 1.27 mm and right; 4.01 ± 1.15 mm). Conclusions: These findings highlight the need for clinicians to be aware of the location of the MF in treatment planning and while performing non-surgical and surgical endodontic procedures.

The subject for this study consisted 118 patients admitted to the Department of Oral Radiology, Kyung Hee University and Seoul National University from 1974 to 1983. Conclusions from this study were as follows: 1. There was a higher incidence in males (70.34%) than in females (29.66%), and the incidence was highest in the second and third decade (26.27%) with the same incidence. (Average age: 25 year) 2. There was a higher incidence in the maxillary teeth (66.10%) than in the mandibular teeth (33.90%) and the maxillary supernumerary tooth (45.76%) was the most frequently involved one. The mandibular third molar (16.10%) was next in order of frequency of involvement followed by maxillary canine (7.63%), mandibular second premolar (5.08%). 3. There was a greater incidence of the central type than the lateral type in the maxilla, while a higher incidence of the lateral type in the mandible. 4. There was a greater incidence of the smooth type (84.26%) than that of the scalloped type (15.74%) and a higher incidence of minor type (70.91%) than the major type (29.09%) in the displacement of associated tooth. 5. Root apices of teeth encompassed or approached by the cysts showed variable resorption in 68.47% of cases.
