PURPOSE. The maximum width between the mesial and distal labial transitional line angles, described as "esthetic width" herein, could significantly influence the visual perception of the teeth and smile. This study aimed to conduct biometric research on esthetic width and to explore whether regular distribution exists in the esthetic width of human teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 4,264 maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth were measured using the Geomagic studio software program. The proportions of maxillary to mandibular homonymous teeth and proportions between the adjacent teeth were calculated. Bilateral symmetry and the correlation between the esthetic and mesiodistal widths were both accounted for during the measurement procedures. RESULTS. The mean esthetic widths were 6.773 ± 0.518 mm and 4.329 ± 0.331 mm for maxillary and mandibular central incisors, respectively, 5.451 ± 0.487 mm and 5.008 ± 0.351 mm for maxillary and mandibular lateral incisors, respectively, and 3.340 ± 0.353 mm and 5.958 ± 0.415 mm for maxillary and mandibular canines, respectively. Except for the mandibular canines, no significant difference in esthetic width was found among homonymous teeth from the same jaw. A high linear correlation was found between the esthetic and mesiodistal widths of the same tooth, except for the maxillary canines. Esthetic width proportions among different tooth categories showed some regular patterns, which were similar to those of the mesiodistal width. CONCLUSION. Esthetic width is regularly distributed among the teeth in the Chinese population. This could provide an important reference for anterior dental restorations and dimension recovery in esthetic reconstruction of anterior teeth.
Odontogenic anomalies can occur as a result of conjoining defects. These include fusion, gemination and concrescence. The presence of fused teeth can lead to various clinical problems, including the aplasia of permanent successor, the supernumerary teeth and delayed eruption of permanent teeth. In general, the supernumerary teeth associated with fusion is mainly found in the maxillary anterior region. This report describes rare cases of supernumerary tooth associated with fused teeth of mandibular primary lateral incisor and canine. In the first case, fused teeth was extracted. The supernumerary teeth was erupted at canine space. The second case is still being observed. Extraction of fused teeth and observation of supernumerary teeth is planned.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the stress distribution and the displacement pattern of mandibular anterior teeth under various intrusive force vectors according to the position of orthodontic miniscrews and hooks, using three-dimensional finite element analysis. Methods: A three-dimensional finite element model was constructed to simulate mandibular teeth, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. The displacement of individual tooth on three-dimensional planes and the von Mises stress distribution were compared when various intrusion force vectors were applied. Results: Intrusive forces applied to 4 mandibular anterior teeth largely resulted in remarkable labial tipping of the segment according to the miniscrew position. All 6 mandibular anterior teeth were labially tipped and the stress concentrated on the labiogingival area by intrusive force from miniscrews placed mesial to the canine. The distointrusive force vector led to pure intrusion and the stress was evenly distributed in the whole periodontal ligament when the hook was placed between the central and lateral incisors and the miniscrew was placed distal to the canine. Conclusions: Within the limits of this study, it can be concluded that predictable pure intrusion of the 6 anterior teeth segment may be accomplished using miniscrews placed distal to the canine and hooks located between the central and lateral incisors.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the interdental distances of anterior, premolar, and molar teeth at the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) and 2 mm below the CEJ in healthy natural dentition with cone-beam computerized tomography (cone-beam CT) in order to provide valuable data for ideal implant positioning relative to mesiodistal bone dimensions. Materials and Methods: Two hundred patients who visited Dental Hospital, Wonkwang University, who had natural dentition with healthy interdental papillae, and who underwent cone-beam CT were selected. The cone-beam CT images were converted to digital imaging and communication in medicine (DICOM) files and reconstructed in three-dimensional images. To standardize the cone-beam CT images, head reorientation was performed. All of the measurements were determined on the reconstructed panoramic images by three professionally trained dentists. Results: At the CEJ, the mean maxillary interdental distances were 1.84 mm (anterior teeth), 2.07 mm (premolar), and 2.08 mm (molar), and the mean mandibular interproximal distances were 1.55 mm (anterior teeth), 2.20 mm (premolar), and 2.36 mm (molar). At 2mm below the CEJ, the mean maxillary interdental distances were 2.19 mm (anterior teeth), 2.51 mm (premolar), and 2.60 mm (molar), and the mean mandibular interproximal distances were 1.86 mm (anterior teeth), 2.53 mm (premolar), and 3.01 mm (molar). Conclusion: The interdental distances in the natural dentition were larger at the posterior teeth than at the anterior teeth and also at 2 mm below the CEJ level compared with at the CEJ level. The distances between mandibular incisors were the narrowest and the distances between mandibular molars were the widest in the entire dentition.
This research was performed to find out the adaptation patterns of maxillary and mandibular posterior teeth to the changes in relationships of vertical skeletal components, which constitute the skeletofacial complex. For this research, 61 adult malocclusion patients were chosen as subjects according to the Hellman's dental age with normally ranged FMN-A-B angle. These subjects were divided into 4 groups in maxilla and 3 groups in mandible according to mesiodistal inclinations of teeth. Following results were obtained after studying the relationships of the vertical skeletal components between each group. 1. Inspire of the fact that the FMN-A-B angle was within a normal range, the degree of mesiodistal inclinations of maxillary and mandibular posterior teeth showed differences in relation to the anteroposterior relationships of maxilla and mandible. In case where the FMN-A-B angle was large, the mesial inclinations of maxillary posterior teeth showed more increase from the posterior to the anterior, whereas in mandible it showed overall decrease. 2. The degrees of mesial inclinations of mandibular posterior teeth were increased when the angulations of lower facial height, occlusal plane angle and mandibular plane angle were greater. 3. The patterns of mesial inclinations of maxillary posterior teeth were varied according to the angulation of lower facial height. If relatively large, it showed more increase from the posterior to the anterior and it was decreased nearly consistent when the angulation was small. 4. The degrees of mesial inclinations of maxillary posterior teeth were decreased as the lower facial height, palatal plane angle, occlusal plane angle and the mandibular plane angle became greater.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to spectrophotometrically evaluate the shade difference between of maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth in the Korean by the standard of vita classical shade guide using $SpectroShade^{TM}$. Material and methods: In this study, the shades of healthy anterior teeth were examined and analyzed using the digital shade analysis of $SpectroShade^{TM}$. This study examined 80 individuals in their twenties, thirties, fourties, fifities ages and 40 males and 40 females, presenting 12 healthy, unrestored maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth. Tooth brushing and oral prophylaxis were performed prior to evaluation. The $SpectroShade^{TM}$ was used to acquire images of the 12 maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth. These images were analyzed using $SpectroShade^{TM}$ Software, and shade maps of each tooth were acquired. The shade difference of upper and lower, and gender differences and ages difference were investigated and analyzed with CIE $L^{*}a^{*}b^{*}$ color order system. One-Way ANOVA test was used to find out if there were significant differences between groups tested and Sheffe multiple comparison was used to identify where the differences were. Results: 1. Shade differences were significant (P < .05) between maxillary and mandibular central incisor, lateral incisor, canine. 2. No significant differences in shade distribution were seen between lateral incisors and central incisors. 3. Canine's shade difference were more significant than central incisor's and lateral incisors's. 4. No significant differences in shade distribution were seen between genders in maxillary and mandibulr central incisor, lateral incisor, canine. 5. No significant differences in shade distribution were seen in order of years in maxillary and mandibulr central incisor, lateral incisor, canine. Conclusions: The results of this study show that 1. Shade difference was founded in maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth and ${\Delta}E^{*}$ value was more than 2.0. 2. Canine's shade difference were more significant than central incisor's and lateral incisors's and between central incisors and lateral incisors shade differences were no significant. 3. No significant differences in shade distribution were seen between genders in maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth. 4. No significant differences in shade distribution were seen in order of years grade in maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth.
A study on the impacted teeth of the anterior segment was carried out. The data for this study were compiled form 1739 outpatients of the Department of Orthodontics, College of Dentistry, Seoul National University. The following conclusions were obtained; 1. The frequency of the impacted teeth of the anterior segment was 2.8% and the frequency of male was 4.0%, that of female was 2.1%., respectively. 2. The order of occurrence of the impacted teeth in the anterior segment was maxillary canine mesiodens, maxillary central incisor, maxillary lateral incisor, mandibular canine. 3. The etiologic factors of the impaction were the space deficiency for eruption, cleft palate, the prolonged retention of deciduous teeth, dentigerous cyst. 4. The favorable results of treatment and prognosis were obtained from the impacted teeth of the normal shape after surgical exposure and adhered the plastic attachment and inducted them into the dental arch.
Purpose: To analyze the amount and pattern of tooth movement and the changes in arch dimension of mandibular dentition after orthodontic treatment using a new three-dimensional (3D)-indirect superimposition method. Materials and Methods: The samples consisted of fifteen adult patients with class I bialveolar protrusion and minimal anterior crowding, treated by extraction of four first premolars with conventional sliding mechanics. After superimposition of 3D-virtual maxillary models before and after treatment using best-fit method, 3D-virtual mandibular model at each stage was placed into a common coordinate of superimposition using 3D-bite information, which resulted in 3D-indirect superimposition for mandibular dentition. The changes in mandibular dental and arch dimensional variables were measured with Rapidform 2006 (INUS Technology). Paired t-test was used for statistical analysis. Result: The anterior teeth moved backward, displaced laterally, and inclined lingually. The posterior teeth showed statistically significant contraction toward midsagittal plane. The amounts of backward movement of anterior teeth and forward movement of posterior teeth showed a ratio of 6 : 1. Although the inter-canine width increased slightly (0.8 mm, P<0.05), the inter-second premolar, inter-first molar, and inter-second molar widths decreased significantly with similar amounts (2.2 mm, P<0.05; 2.3 mm, P<0.01; 2.3 mm, P<0.001). The molar depth decreased (6.7 mm, P<0.001) but canine depth did not change. Conclusion: A new 3D-indirect superimposition of the mandibular dentitions using best-fit method and 3D-bite information can present a guideline for virtual treatment planning in terms of tooth position and arch dimension.
Increased anterior teeth mastication following posterior teeth loss leads to greater anterior occlusal force. It may cause greater attrition of anterior teeth, traumatic force occlusion (TFO), also often followed by antagonist extrusion and occlusal disharmony. This clinical report describes the treatment for a 67-year-old female patient diagnosed with loss of both maxillary and left mandibular posterior teeth, severe attrition of maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth and extrusion of multiple teeth. A diagnostic cast was mounted on articular in centric relation (CR) position to evaluate vertical dimension (VD) and interspace. To provide adequate space for the prosthetic reconstructions, VD was increased by 3 mm on the anterior pin. And then diagnostic wax-up was completed upon that VD. Wax-up was converted to provisional restorations and verified in the patient's mouth and the final restorations were delivered. Clinical follow up examination held 3 months after temporary restoration owing to changes in vertical dimension revealed proper function in mastication without evidence of temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. This clinical report presents successfully restoring severe attrition case with increasing vertical dimension resulting in satisfaction in esthetics and function.
Objective: To evaluate the relationship of gingival thickness (GT) and the width of keratinized gingiva (WKG) with different malocclusion groups and the level of crowding. Methods: A total of 187 periodontally healthy subjects (121 females and 66 males) who presented at the Faculty of Dentistry in $Y{\ddot{u}}z{\ddot{u}}nc{\ddot{u}}$ Yil University for orthodontic treatment were enrolled in the study. The individuals involved in the study were divided into three groups; Angle Class I malocclusion, Angle Class II malocclusion, and Angle Class III malocclusion. Each group was classified as mild, moderate, or severe according to the level of crowding. WKG was determined as the distance between the mucogingival junction and the free gingival margin. GT was determined by the transgingival probing technique. Factorial variance analysis and the Duncan multiple comparison test were employed to identify the extent to which a difference was apparent between the groups according to these parameters. Results: It was determined that teeth in the mandibular anterior region display the thin gingival biotype. WKG and GT were observed as being higher at the mandibular incisor teeth in the severe crowding group and at the mandibular canine teeth in the mild crowding group. The GT of the mandibular right central and lateral incisors was found to be thinner in the Angle Class III group. Conclusions: Within the limits of this study, the results demonstrate that, there is no significant relationship of WKG and the mean GT in the mandibular anterior region according to the Angle classification.
