  • This study analyzes the influential factors and patterns associated with death from aircraft accidents and incidents using data mining techniques. To this end, we used two datasets for aircraft accidents and incidents, one from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the other from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). We developed our prediction models using the decision tree classifier to predict death from aircraft accidents or aircraft incidents and thereby derive the main cause factors and patterns that can cause death based on these prediction models. In the NTSB data, deaths occurred frequently when the aircraft was destroyed or people were performing dangerous missions or maneuver. In the FAA data, deaths were mainly caused by pilots who were less skilled or less qualified when their aircraft were partially destroyed. Several death-related patterns were also found for parachute jumping and aircraft ascending and descending phases. Using the derived patterns, we proposed helpful strategies to prevent death from the aircraft accidents or incidents.

  • Objectives: Authors investigated the pattern of the rate of occupational injuries and illnesses (ROII) at the level of enterprises in order to build a network for exchange of experience and knowledge, which would contribute to workers' safety and health through safety climate of workplace. Methods: Occupational accidents were analyzed at the manufacturing work site unit. A two step clustering process for the past patterns regarding the ROII from 2001 to 2009 was investigated. The ROII patterns were categorized based on regression analysis and the patterns were further divided according to the subtle changes with Mahalanobis distance and Ward's linkage. Results: The first clustering of ROII through regression analysis showed 5 different functions; 29 work sites of the linear function, 50 sites of the quadratic function, 95 sites of the logarithm function, 62 sites of the exponential function, and 54 sites of the sine function. Fourteen clusters were created in the second clustering. There were 3 clusters in each function categorized in the first clustering except for sine function. Each cluster consisted of the work sites with similar ROII patterns, which had unique characteristics. Conclusion: The five different patterns of ROII suggest that tailored management activities should be applied to every work site. Based on these differences, the authors selected exemplary work sites and built a network to help the work sites to share information on safety climate and accident prevention measures. The causes of different patterns of ROII, building network and evaluation of this management model should be evaluated as future researches.

  • Using the 1995 Survey of Consumer Finances, this study investigates how family life-cycle stages and financial management practices affect household saving. First findings are that household income and householders education, race and ethnicity have significant effects on saving. Second, regarding the effect of the family life-cycle stages, younger married couples without children, middle pre-retired households without dependent children, and older households without dependent children are more likely to save than other similar households in the life-cycle stage of younger single households. Third, households with longer financial planning horizons, saving goals for retirement, purchase of durable goods and emergency goods, and low credit card debt are more likely to save. Based on the results, implications for financial management education and public policy are suggested.

  • The purpose of this ethnography is to describe and analyze the employment and substitutional use of daily help for the household work. Ten housewives and one educator of daily help from Gwangju City were interviewed with an unstructured questionnaire. They experience many difficulties from this daily help employment and use, even though they gain some basic help from their service. The diversity of the routes to seek out this daily help means that there is no proper route. And the daily help's sudden quit causes many realistic and psychological problems. Frequent disagreement between the user's demand and help's implement comes from communication failure. Three different management patterns of daily help were issued ; 'conservative-dominant', 'rational-mandatory', 'powerless-dependent'.

  • This study considered the whole intake patterns and realities of consumption of instant noodles on sales targeting children and adolescents. Based on a total of 1021 subjects, data from self-administrated questionnaires were collected and analyzed using comparative statistical analysis, including frequency, chi-square, t-test, and one-way ANOVA. Results of the study were as follows. The preference levels for instant noodles by children and adolescents were 5.25, thereby showing a more than moderate preference. Middle school boy students' preference for instant noodles was the highest. The main reason for preferring instant noodles was taste and convenience. The main reason for disliking instant noodles was poor nutrition and likelihood of becoming fat. The intake of instant noodles was the highest between lunch and dinner with a frequency of once to twice per week. Content of soup powder given taking instant noodles was the largest in having putted all. The soup quantity of being left given taking instant noodles was possessed the majority in almost not eating soup. The main reason for not consuming soup was being full or concerns for health. A significant difference was observed in preference level for instant noodles and in intake patterns depending on the respondents' general characteristics. Limitations and future research directions are also discussed.

  • Schedule control is an exceedingly fundamental and important construction business function. Even though enormous research efforts have been exerted in this area, there has been no comprehensive and quantitative study exploring detailed cost control practice of construction companies in terms of practical patterns and trends. In this context, this paper surveyed the patterns and trends of schedule control practice of Korean general contractors. Schedule control process as compared to schedule reduction is focused in this paper. The variables for practical schedule control process were identified first. A survey questionnaire was then developed and used in order to collect data from Korean general contractors. Survey results analyzing responses from 45 companies show that scheduling processes in practice have been significantly enhanced in terms of software tools, manuals, and capabilities of engineers.

  • Process fault diagnosis is a complicated matter because quality control problems can result from a variety of causes. These causes include problems with electrical components, mechanical components, human errors, job justification errors, and air conditioning influences. In order to make the system run smoothly with minimum delay, it is necessary to suggest heuristic remedies for the detected faults. Hence, this paper describes a heuristic methodology of fault diagnosis that is performed using statistical patterns generated by quality characteristics The proposed methodology is described briefly as follows: If a sample pattern generated by random variables is similar to the number of prototype patterns, the sample pattern may be matched by any prototype pattern among them to be resembled. This concept is based on the similarity between a sample pattern and the matched prototype pattern. The similarity is calculated as the weighted average of squared deviation, which is expressed as the difference between the relative values of standard normal distribution to be transformed by the observed values of quality characteristics in a sample pattern and the critical values of the corresponding ones in a matched prototype pattern.

  • This paper suggests a typology of the modes of collaboration for scientific and technological knowledge production and sharing (STKPS) based on knowledge communication types, including organizational factors, communication channel, intensity, and decision-making, that affect STKPS processes. It is mainly designed to rearrange ideas about collaboration drawn from the literature in order to develop a conceptual framework for categorizing modes of collaboration based on how communication patterns shape four modes of collaboration. In the conclusion and discussion part, practical implications, limitations of this study, and further studies are discussed. In particular, the practical implications propose communication patterns suitable for five stages of collaboration processes. As the collaboration initiation or set-up stage is critical, extensive face-to-face communication is recommended in the auditing stage. In the execution stage, media-based communication can be actively utilized, because collaborators will mostly exchange explicit codified knowledge supported by IT. The evaluation and reinforcement stages concentrate on tacit knowledge exchange and explicit knowledge evaluation, which requires intensive face-to-face communication including negotiations for evaluating collaboration outcomes and partnership.

  • THis study examines a contingency relationship between task uncertainty and structure of project teams in conjunction with the leader-member communication patterns. Multivariate analyses are used to analyze the data from 63 R & D project teams of research laboratory in a large manufacturing corporation. Major findings for this study can be summarized as follows. First, project teams with an organic structure are found to yield high performance when task uncertainty is high, while project teams with a mechanistic structure achieve high performance when their tasks are relatively certain. Second, patterns of leader-member comunication are significantly associated with both task uncertainty and structural characteristics of project teams. This implies that leaders of project teams communicate with their members in more conslutative manner when their tasks are uncertain or when their team structure exhibits organic characteristics. Finally, task uncertainty playus a significant moderating role in the relationship between consultative communication patterns and performance of project teams. Based upon these findings, this study offers several theoretical, practical, and methodological implications.

  • Objectives : This study investigated the health care utilization patterns of workers' compensation insurance(WCI) pneumoconiosis patients with excessively long hospital stays. Methods : The discharge summary data of 3,094 WCI pneumoconiosis patients were analyzed. The study sample was divided into 3 groups based on the length of stay(LOS). Health care utilization patterns were compared among the groups with logistic regression analysis, and the LOS determinants were identified with linear regression analysis. Results : The average LOS of the 222 long stay group patients was 1,448 days. Patients in this group tended to use private general hospitals, were admitted through the emergency room and discharged without the consent of a doctor. Conclusions : Many of the long LOS patients will maintain their inpatient status for the rest of their lives. For quality of life and efficient use of health care resources, policy makers need to establish a policy that enables patients to receive outpatient care in appropriate living conditions outside the hospital.
