  • The entire construction safety is significantly influenced by proper uses of temporary structures. However, in current practices, temporary structures are used without sufficient planning and analysis on their impact on safety. Consequently, problems in worker safety and loss of productivity are frequently caused related to temporary structures. This paper introduces an approach that uses Building Information Modeling (BIM) to automatically create temporary structures as part of construction plans and identifies potential safety hazards related to the temporary structures. In this study, the type of temporary structure is limited to scaffolding. Automation algorithms were developed and applied to (1) analyze daily construction site conditions (2) create required scaffolding objects, and (3) identify potential safety hazards related to scaffolding. A case study using a real-world construction project demonstrated that scaffolding objects were properly created based on user-input and potential safety hazards were successfully identified without human intervention.

  • As a certain job is repeatedly done by a worker, the outcome comparative to the effort to complete the job gets more remarkable. The outcome may be the time required and fraction defective. This phenomenon is referred to a learning-curve effect. We focus on the parametric modeling of the learning-curve effects on count data using a logistic cumulative distribution function and some probability mass functions such as a Poisson and negative binomial. We conduct various simulation scenarios to clarify the characteristics of the proposed model. We also consider a real application to compare the two discrete-type distribution functions.

  • In contrast to the gradual reduction in the number of locally transmitted malaria cases in China, the number of imported malaria cases has been increasing since 2008. Here, we report a case of a 39-year-old Chinese man who acquired Plasmodium ovale wallikeri infection while staying in Ghana, West Africa for 6 months in 2012. Microscopic examinations of Giemsa-stained thin and thick blood smears indicated Plasmodium vivax infection. However, the results of rapid diagnostic tests, which were conducted 3 times, were not in agreement with P. vivax. To further check the diagnosis, standard PCR analysis of the small-subunit rRNA gene was conducted, based on which a phylogeny tree was constructed. The results of gene sequencing indicated that this malaria is a variant of P. ovale (P. ovale wallikeri). The infection in this patient was not a new infection, but a relapse of the infection from the one that he had contracted in West Africa.

  • Continuous research efforts have been made on acquiring location data on construction sites. As a result, GPS and RFID are increasingly employed on the site to track the location of equipment and materials. However, these systems are based on radio frequency technologies which require attaching tags on every target entity. Implementing the systems incurs time and costs for attaching/detaching/managing the tags or sensors. For this reason, efforts are currently being made to track construction entities using only cameras. Vision-based 3D tracking has been presented in a previous research work in which the location of construction manpower, vehicle, and materials were successfully tracked. However, the proposed system is still in its infancy and yet to be implemented on practical applications for two reasons. First, it does not involve entity matching across two views, and thus cannot be used for tracking multiple entities, simultaneously. Second, the use of a checker board in the camera calibration process entails a focus-related problem when the baseline is long and the target entities are located far from the cameras. This paper proposes a vision-based method to track multiple workers simultaneously. An entity matching procedure is added to acquire the matching pairs of the same entities across two views which is necessary for tracking multiple entities. Also, the proposed method simplified the calibration process by avoiding the use of a checkerboard, making it more adequate to the realistic deployment on construction sites.

  • Work-related falls are a major problem in the construction and roofing industries. To avoid serious injury to the worker caused by high decelerations or forces, different systems to absorb the energy of a fall are implemented in personal protective equipment. In this study, shock energy absorber lanyard protection tube was prepared using high tenacity PET fiber, P-aramid fiber, and UHMWPE fiber, respectively. Dynamic load test and static load test, bursting strength test based on the Korea fall protection equipment standard(Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency standard 2013-13) or conformity European safety test(CE : EN355) were conducted. Especially maximum arrest force by dynamic load test of energy absorber showed below 6,000N.

  • The purpose of this study is that problems caused by labor environment of cuisiniers in hotels need to be considered and studies regarding a part-time cuisinier in a special-grade hotel need to be conducted. This study analyzes the influence of labor conditions and organizational commitment of a part-time hotel cuisinier on duty satisfaction. It consists of two parts: a research based on the review of the literature and empirical study methods. The method of human resource management in hotels such as treatment of a part-time cuisinier in a special-grade hotel and the way of management as a result of an empirical study are proposed. First, as a result of conducting research on duty satisfaction to part-time cuisinier, most of them are highly satisfied with their duty regardless of their age and academic backgrounds. Second, men hold a majority; woman staffs tent to have a had time working overtime considering the situation that hotels run for 24 hours. That is the main reason why less woman staffs work in hotels than man staffs do. Part-time staffs would like to work consistently after they get upgraded to a regular worker. Forth, it is considered to break down into detailed sectors and speciality is highly demanded.

  • The Korean version of the morningness-eveningness questionnaire (MEQ) and sleep habits inventory were administered to 1,038 Korean male daytime workers and were analyzed according to age and chronotype to determine what these factors reveal about sleep habits in view of phase difference of circadian rhythm. The mean and distribution of scores on the MEQ moved significantly toward the morning type with aging. Bedtimes and waking times were progressively later from the morning, intermediate, to evening types, and were also earlier with aging. Preferred bedtimes and waking times showed more distinct differences than did the habitual times in each chronotype. The percentage of subjects who answered that sleep length was 'short', mood upon waking was 'bad', and variabilities of bedtime and sleep length were 'large' were greater in the young and evening types than in the elder and morning types, respectively. These findings suggested that subjects were shifted toward the morning type and the phase of circadian rhythm had moved forward with aging. Preferred bedtime and waking time were a better reflection of individual circadian rhythms than habitual bedtime and waking time.

  • Background: On June 18, 2017, Korea's first commercial nuclear reactor, the Kori Nuclear Power Plant No. 1, was permanently suspended, and the capacity of nuclear power generation facilities will be adjusted according to the governments denuclearization policy. In these circumstances, it is necessary to assess the quality of radiation safety management in nuclear power plants in Korea by evaluating the radiation dose associated with them. Materials and Methods: The average annual radiation dose per unit, the annual radiation dose per person, and the annual dose distribution were analyzed using the radiation dose database of nuclear reactors for the last 5 years. The results of our analysis were compared to the specifications of the Nuclear Safety Act and Medical Law in Korea. Results and Discussion: The annual average per unit radiation dose of global major nuclear power generation was 720 man-mSv, while that of Korea's nuclear power plants was 374 manmSv. No workers exceeded 50 mSv per year or 100 mSv in 5 years. The individual radiation dose according to occupational exposure was 0.59 mSv for nuclear workers, 1.77 mSv for non-destructive workers, and 0.8 mSv for diagnostic radiologists. Conclusion: The radiation safety management of nuclear power plants in Korea has achieved the best outcomes worldwide, which is considered to be the result of the as-low-as-reasonably-achievable (ALARA) approach and strict radiation safety management. Moreover, the occupational exposures were also very low.
