Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the psychological state of the patients according to skeletal class III malocclusion symptoms. Methods: The subjects were 200 skeletal class III malocclusion patients. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics, clinical manifestation, and T score of Korean version of self-rated Symptom Checklist-90-Revision modified by Jae-hwan Kim. The data were analyzed using SAS version 9.2 and t-test, ANOVA, and ANCOVA were used. Clinical manifestation included subjective recognition and radiological analysis. The subjective recognition of the patients consisted of self-satisfaction of the appearance, phonation, mastication, and temporomandibular joint pain. T score consisted of somatization, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, and psychoticism. Results: The most serious factor in 9 scales was the severe TMJ pain by ANCOVA. Male patients had a higher T score in phobic anxiety, psyochoticism, somatization and depression than female patients. Those having low appearance satisfaction had the problem in interpersonal sensitivity. Obsessive-compulsive symptoms were conspicuous in phonation difficulty and temporomandibular pain. Conclusions: The patients with skeletal class III malocclusion have more satisfaction with appearance, pronunciation, and phonation than those with skeletal class III malocclusion and overjet. Proper dental treatment will improve the communication and quality of life.
This study was conducted to assess the positional changes of hyoid bone following the use of activator in Angles class III malocclusion patients with functional factors. For this study, 40 Angle's class I patients and 40 Angle's class III patients, totally 80 subjects were used. They are all in Hellman's dental age IIIB-IIIC ranges. In lateral cephalogram to compare Angle's class I group and Angle's class III group, and the positional changes of the hyoid bone before and after the use of activator in Angle's class III malocclusion group. The results were obtained as follows; 1. Comparison of Angle's class I group and Angle's class III group. In comparison to Angle's class I group, hyoid bone is more anteriorly and superiorly positioned in Angle's class III group. The hyoid bone showed reverse inclination to the mandibular plane in Angle's class III malocclusion group. 2. Comparison of the hyoid positional change before and after use of Activator in Angle's class III malocclusion group. The hyoid bone is displaced posteriorly and inferiorly in vertical relationship. The hyoid bone also showed counter-clockwise rotation. 3. No statistical difference was found between after Activator use data of Angle's class m malocclusion group and Angle's class I group. It is concluded that the hyoid bone in Angle's class III malocclusion group changed its position, similar to Angle's class I malocclusion group.

The posttraumatic complications of jaw fractures related to jaw function and facial deformity include nonunion, malunion, malocclusion, temporomandibular joint dysfunction and facial asymmetry. This report presents cases referred to our department for revision of malunion and malocclusion following inadequate reduction of jaw fractures. Three patients with posttraumatic malocclusions caused by malunion were treated with a LeFort I osteotomy in one case and re-fracture in two cases. All of the patients exhibited stable results without further complications (e.g., malunion or malocclusion). Accurate preoperative diagnosis and proper anatomical reduction of the fracture segments are essential to preventing post-surgical malunion and malocclusion.
To find out the antero-posterior morphology of the upper face in Angle's class III malocclusion patients, 90 patients, adults in Heilman's Dental age, were used as samples and following results were obtained after the relative comparision of antero-posterior relationship of upper facial structures between Angle's class I malocclusion patients and Angle's class III malocclusion patients and of antero-posterior size of upper facial structures to horizontal and vertical structures in each patients. 1. After comparison of the distance from PMV line to anterior margin of maxillary sinus and cheek, which determines the antero-posterior position of the upper face, upper face in Angle's class III patients are underdeveloped relative to Angle's class I patients. The distance between orbitale and anterior margin of maxillary sinus were greater in Angle's class I patients, whic implies thart the upper face in Angle's class III are depressed. 2. Antero-posterior dimension of anterior cranial base from PMV line and vertical dimension of upper face are statistically insignificant between two groups. After comparing antero-posterior position of upper face to anterior cranial base, the upper face in Angle's class Et patients are depressed antero-posteriorly in relation to anterior cranial base. Following the comparision of antero-posterior position of upper face in relation to vertical dimension of upper face, the upper face in Angle's class III patients seem to be narrow antero-posteriorly
As a society has developed, much concern has been put on appearances of people with development of economy. Accordingly malocclusion patients have been increasing. With this trend, it has become very important to investigate patients characteristics so as to cure the patients effectively. This study investigated 724 malocclusion patients who had been examined diagmosed and recorded well at Chong-a Dental Hospital for 5 years from 1994 to 1998. The results are as follows ; 1) The total number of orthodontic patients in 1998 increased about 79% than in 1994, and female orthodontic patients(68.1%) were more than male ones(31.9%). 2) Age distribution has shown more than 19 year-old group being the largest(48.9%) 3) Distributions in the types of malocclusion according to the Angle's classification have shown 42.5% for class I division, 21.5% for class II division, 35.9% for class III division, being class I division the largest. 4) 50.1% of the total patients were from Kang-nam Gu, So-cho Gu, and Song-pa Gu.
Background: During the orthognathic surgery, it is important to know the exact anatomical location of the mandibular foramen to achieve successful anesthesia of inferior alveolar nerve and to prevent damage to the nerves and vessels supplying the mandible. Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was used to determine the location of the mandibular foramen in 100 patients: 30 patients with normal occlusion (13 men, 17 women), 40 patients with skeletal class II malocclusion (15 men, 25 women), 30 patients with skeletal class III malocclusion (17 men, 13 women). Results: The distance from the anterior border of the mandibular ramus to mandibular foramen did not differ significantly among the three groups, but in the group with skeletal class III malocclusion, this distance was an average of $1.43{\pm}1.95mm$ longer in the men than in the women (p < 0.05). In the skeletal class III malocclusion group, the mandibular foramen was higher than in the other two groups and was an average of $1.85{\pm}3.23mm$ higher in the men than in the women for all three groups combined (p < 0.05). The diameter of the ramus did not differ significantly among the three groups but was an average of $1.03{\pm}2.58mm$ wider in the men than in the women for all three groups combined (p < 0.05). In the skeletal class III malocclusion group, the ramus was longer than in the other groups and was an average of $7.9{\pm}3.66mm$ longer in the men than women. Conclusions: The location of the mandibular foramen was higher in the skeletal class III malocclusion group than in the other two groups, possibly because the ramus itself was longer in this group. This information should improve the success rate for inferior alveolar nerve anesthesia and decrease the complications that attend orthognathic surgery.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the characteristics of the pronunciation of Korean vowels in patients with class III malocclusion. 11 adult male patients with class III malocclusion(mean ages 22.3 years) and four adult males with normal occlusion(mean ages 26.5 years) were selected for the analysis of eight Korean monophthongs /ㅣ, ㅔ, ㅐ, ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅗ, ㅡ, ㅜ/. The values and relationships of F1, F2 and F3 were derived from the stable section of target vowel in each sentence, and the analysis using formant plots and vowel triangles' distance and area was conducted to find the features of two groups' vowel distributions. Consequently, it was identified that the pronunciation of males patients with class III malocclusion showed high values of F1 in the low vowels, high values of F2 in the back vowels, and remarkably low position of /ㅏ/. The vowel triangle suggested that the triangle areas of male patients with class III malocclusion were shown wider vertically and narrower horizontally than those of males with normal occlusion. These characteristics could reflect the structural features of class III malocclusion such as the prognathic mandible, low tongue position, and advancement of back position of the tongue.
This study was carried out to research the adaptation patterns of head posture after activator therapy in functional class III malocclusion patients. For this purpose, 29 functional class III malocclusion patients, from the ages of 8 to 13 years old, were used. 1, Increse in capacity of oral cavity capacity were found in all the samples, but craniocervical angulation were varied into incresed group and decreased group after activator therapy. 2. Head posture exhibited the compensatory adaptation in the relative growth increments of the vertical dimension, ALFH and PLFH. 1) A group with more PLFH and less sagittal angle showed relatively small growth increment in PLFH during the treatment period, thus craniocervical angulation was increased. 2) A group with less PLFH and more sagittal angle showed relatively great growth incrmenet in PLFH during the treatment period, thus craniocervical angulation was decreased.
Objective: This study aimed to quantitatively assess the relationship of smile esthetic variables with various types of malocclusion, and identify the cephalometric factors affecting smile measurements. Methods: This retrospective study included 106 patients who were treated with retention at the orthodontic department of Taipei Medical University Hospital. Hard-tissue variables were measured using lateral cephalographic tracings, and nine smile esthetic variables were measured using facial photographs. The patients were divided into three groups according to their overjet (< 0, 0-4, and > 4 mm). An analysis of variance was conducted to compare the pretreatment cephalometric variables and smile esthetic variables among the three groups. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to identify the cephalometric factors affecting the smile measurements in each group. Results: Except the upper midline and buccal corridor ratio, all of the smile measurements differed significantly among the three groups before orthodontic treatment. Some of the smile characteristics were correlated with the cephalometric measurements in different types of malocclusion. The overjet was the major factor influencing the smile pattern in all three types of malocclusion. Conclusions: Smile characteristics differ between different types of malocclusion; the smile may be influenced by skeletal pattern, dental procumbency, or facial type. These findings indicate that establishment of an optimal horizontal anterior teeth relationship is the key to improving the smile characteristics in different types of malocclusion.
Background: This study was done to better understand patterns, trends and local distribution patterns of malocclusion so that we can provide adequate information to patients, to help make the appropriate diagnosis and therapeutic plans, and to assess the future directions of malocclusion treatment. Materials and Methods: Malocclusion patterns, distribution and trends of visiting patients were examined in 993 malocclusion patients who had been evaluated and diagnosed at the Department of Dentistry, Yeungnam University Hospital over a 10-year period from 1995 to 2004. Results: The number of visiting patients per year showed an increasing trend and the visit rate was 1.28 time-higher in females(56.1%) than in males(43.9%). 1) Age distribution showed that the 7-12 year-old group was the largest (36.7%). Geographic distribution showed the majority of patients were from the Dalseo district(28.2%). Angle's malocclusion classification revealed that class III was the largest(38.4%). Crowding was the chief complaint in the highest percentage of patients(33.9%). The therapeutic method used was the fixed appliance in 61% of cases and a combination with extraction in 30.8%. Conclusions: The availability of dental services can accommodate orthodontic needs adequately as well as obtain reliable quantitative information regarding the characteristics of orthodontic patients.
