  • The effects of compatibilizers on the mechanical and rheological properties of PP/PCL and TPO/PCL blends have been studied. The thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) consists of PP (80 wt%), EPDM (15 wt%) and Talc (5 wt%). Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) and maleic anhydride grafted styrene-(ethylene-co-butene)-styrene copolymer (SEBS-g-MAH) were used as compatibilizers. In mechanical properties of PP/PCL and TPO/PCL blends, tensile strength was increased when PP-g-MAH was used as a compatibilizer, and impact strength was increased when SEBS-g-MAH was used as a compatibilizer. From the results of SEM morphology of PP/PCL blend, PCL droplet size was decreased by the addition of PP-g-MAH. From the results of rheological property, complex viscosity of the PP/PCL and TPO/PCL blends did not change appreciably when the compatibilizers were added. From the results of mechanical, morphological and rheological properties of the blends, PP-g-MAH acted as a compatibilizer to increase the tensile strength of the PP/PCL and TPO/PCL blends. While SEBS-g-MAH acted as a impact modifier to increase the impact strength of the PP/PCL and TPO/PCL blends.

  • Mechanical and morphological properties of poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) blends containing compatibilizers were investigated. Poly(styrene-acrylonitrile)-g-maleic anhydride) (SAN-g-MAH), poly(ethylene-co-octene) rubber-maleic anhydride (EOR-MAH) and poly(ethylene-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (EGMA) were used as compatibilizers. Mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural and impact strengths of ABS/PLA (80/20, wt%) blends were found to be increased when the SAN-g-MAH, EOR-MAH and EGMA were used. The maximum values for mechanical properties of the ABS/PLA (80/20) blend were observed when SAN-g-MAH was used as a compatibilizer at the concentration of 3 phr. From morphological studies of the ABS/PLA (80/20) blends, PLA droplet size was decreased by the addition of the compatibilizers used in this study. From the results of mechanical and morphological properties of the ABS/PLA (80/20) blends, SAN-g-MAH (3 phr) was found to be the most effective compatibilizer among the compatibilizers used in this study.

  • Maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene has been widely used to improve the interfacial interaction between the components in PP/polar polymer blends and PP/filler composites and to maximize the physical properties and thermal properties. In this paper. the maleic anhydride (MAH)-grafted polypropylene (co-PP) was fabricated through reactive extrusion process with di-cumyl peroxide (DCP) as an initiator. The grafting degree of MAH depending on the contents of DCP and MAH was investigated by FT-IR spectra and chemical titration. The grafting degree increased with increasing MAH concentration and also showed maximum value at 0.06 wt% of DCP concentration. Melt flow index (MFI) of the grafted copolymer was increased with increasing the contents of MAH. The DSC and TGA analysis data indicate the melting temperature and thermal degradation of PP depending on the grafting degree of MAH.

  • Interfacial evaluation of the untreated and treated Jute and Hemp fibers reinforced different matrix polypropylene-maleic anhydride polypropylene copolymer (PP-MAPP) composites were investigated by micromechanical technique and dynamic contact angle measurement. For the statistical tensile strength of Jute and Hemp fibers, bimodal Weibull distribution was fitted better than the unimodal distribution. The acid-base parameter on the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the natural fiber composites was characterized by calculating the work adhesion, $W_a$. The effect of alkaline, silane coupling agent on natural fibers were obtained with changing MAPP content in PP-MAPP matrices. Alkaline treated fibers made the surface energy to be higher due to removing the weak boundary layers and thus increasing surface area, whereas surface energy of silane treated Jute and Hemp fibers decreased due to blocked high energy sites. MAPP in the PP-MAPP matrix caused the surface energy to increase due to introduced acid-base sites. Microfailure modes of two natural fiber composites were observed clearly differently due to different tensile strength of natural fibers.

  • In order to improve the mechanical properties of jute fiber/polypropylene(PP) composites, the property change with the addition of a coupling agent, maleic anhydride polypropylene(MAPP) was examined experimentally. The maleated coupler acts as an intermediate to chemically connect the polar nature of the fiber and non-polar nature of the polyolefin polymer resin. Furthermore, the decrease in viscosity of the resin which results from the melting point reduction by the MAPP, leads to an increase of contact area with the fiber interface. We discussed the improvement of the PP composite blend of the maleated coupler with the 80mm jute long fiber mat in conjunction with the change of physical parameters in the thermoplastic resin. We confirmed the extent of contribution to the mechanical physical enhancement by using the following parameters: melting flow index(MI) and viscosity, contact angle, thickness of the composite, interfacial shear strength and morphology observation etc. Especially it was observed that the MI and viscosity, MAPP mixture had a very strong relationship with the tensile and flexural strength and modulus, and interfacial shear strength(IFSS).

  • Polyisobutenylsuccinic anhydride(PIBSA), an intermediate for the lubricating oil additive, was prepared by the reaction of polyisobutylene(PIB) with maleic anhydride (MA). The functionality, which indicates the extent of reaction of PIB-a and MA, was determined in the various reaction conditions : fuctionality was 0.98 under the reaction conditions of no solvent for 12 hours at $190^{\circ}C$, 0.21 in benzyl alcohol solvent for 12 hours at $190^{\circ}C$, and 0.03~0.20 with various Lewis acids such as $AlCl_3$, $SnCl_4$, $Et_2AlCl$, and $TiCl_4$. The fuctionality also depended on the structure of PIBs. As ${\alpha}$-olefin content (exo-form) in PIB increased, the fuctionality had a higher value. The structure of PIBSA prepared from PIB and MA was determined with FT IR and $^1H$ NMR spectroscopy. Two strong anhydride IR bands at 1782 and $1855cm^{-1}$ were obserbed and two IR bands at 1639 and $897cm^{-1}$ for unsaturated groups of PIB disappeared. The presence of the anhydride was difficult to find by $^1H$ NMR spectroscopy because the anhydride protons gave relatively small peaks over a 2.0~3.0 range. Polyisobutenylsccinimide (PIBSI), a lublicating oil additive, was prepared by the reaction of PIBSA with diaminoethane.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes crosslinked with poly(acrylic acid-co-maleic anhydride) (PAM) as a polymeric crosslinking agent were prepared to investigate the pervaporation performance for the dehydration separation of aqueous ethanol solution. The characteristics of the resulting membranes crosslinked(x) were analysed by FT-IR and water swelling test. The water swelling decreased with increasing crosslinking agent content. The crosslinked PVA membranes with PAM showed lower water swelling than those of PVA membrane crosslinked with glutaraldehyde and modified PVA membrane. The swelling of water molecules in the crosslinked PVA membranes is more restricted by both chemical crosslinking between PVA and polymeric crosslinking agent chains and physical crosslinking by the entanglement between the PVA and polymeric crosslinking agent chains. For the pervaporation of aqueous ethanol solution through the crosslinked membrane, as the contents of crosslinking agent increased, the separation factor increased while the permeation flux decreased. The separation factor slightly decreased and permeation flux increased with increasing feed water content. As a result it could be considered that PVA-PAM membranes suppressed the plasticization effect even in the range of high water concentration in fled.

  • In order to lower the surface energy of unsaturated polyester(UPE) resin, small amount of siloxane-ester copolymers were incorporated. The copolymers were synthesized by a condensation polymerization using ethylene glycol and hydroxy termintated polydimethylsiloxane as diols and maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride as dibasic acids. The modified UPE resin surface was characterized by dynamic contact angle (DCA), peel strength measurements of pressure sensitive adhesives and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(ESCA). As the copolymer content in the blend and PDMS content in the copolymer are increased, both advancing and receding contact angles against water are increased. The strength required to peel-off the pressure sensitive adhesive tape from the modified UPE resin decreased dramatically with the addition of the copolymer. ESCA results indicated that polydimethylsiloxane segments are predominated at the outer surface of the modified UPE resin.

  • ${\alpha},{\beta}$-Dichlorosuccinic acid was synthesized through the reaction of maleic anhydride with $Cl_2$(g) and ultra violet(200~300nm) wavelength in the presence of $CCl_4$. The second reaction of N-(${\alpha},{\beta}$-dichloro)succinic acid contained glucosamine derivatives(I) was accomplished by a modification of the general acylation using excess ${\alpha},{\beta}$-dichlorosuccinic anhydride in the presence of 2% acetic acid with methanol as a solvent at elevated temperature($70^{\circ}C$). We considered organic acid derivatives were useful especially of treatment for the cultivating porphyra and skin beauty culture.
