  • Piracy has been an ongoing and serious problem in international shipping industry. Somalia is often in the news these days. Somalia has been in a state of unrest for more than two centuries. In recent times, the situation has remained unstable. The persistent unrest is the major driver behind the piracy epidemic in Somalia waters. By the MIA 1906, s.78(1), the expenses in order to be recoverable must have been "properly incurred". The underwriter is also liable in certain circumstances for expenses incurred by the assured in an attempt to avert or diminish loss covered by the policy, under provisions. This class of expenditure is commonly referred to as sue and labour expenses, or suing and labouring expenses; less commonly, as particular charges. The standard marine policy(the S.G.Form) contained what was invariably called the sue and labour clause, which has been replaced in the current Institute Clauses by the "Duty of Assured(Sue and Labour)" Clause in the Hull Clauses, and the "Duty of Assured" Clause, headed "Minimizing losses", in the Cargo Clauses. Sue and labour charges are not confined to expenditure on the part of the assured and his agents, but can include quantified loss consequent upon a sacrifice properly and reasonably made to avert or minimize an insured loss.

  • To predict performances of Stirling Engines, a second-order analysis method has been developed. The present method which is based on the approximate analytical solution to the Ideal Adiabatic Model includes major loss mechanisms due to finite heat transfer and flow friction. Comparison of calculated results with previously reported study for a specific engine shows reasonable agreements and a possibility of being used for basic designs. Also, predicted performances with repect to engine speeds are consistent with experimental data in trend. To improve the prediction capability of this method, it is needed that not only additional losses should be taken into account, but also fundamental characteristics of oscillating flow and heat transfer should be better understood.

  • A three-dimensional computation was conducted to make a study about effects of the inlet boundary layer thickness on the total pressure loss in a low-speed axial compressor operating at the design condition ($\phi=85\%$) and near stall condition($\phi=65\%$). Differences of the tip leakage flow and hub corner-stall induced by the inlet boundary layer thickness enable the loss distribution of total pressure along the span to be altered. At design condition, total pressure losses for two different inlet boundary layers are almost alike in the core flow region but the larger loss is generated at both hub and tip when the inlet boundary layer is thin. At the near stall condition, however, total pressure loss fer the thick inlet boundary layer is found to be greater than that for the thin inlet boundary layer on most of the span except the region near hub and casing. Total pressure loss is scrutinized through three major loss categories in a subsonic axial compressor such as profile loss, tip leakage loss and endwall loss using Denton's loss model, and effects of the inlet boundary layer thickness on the loss structure are analyzed in detail.

  • Anthracnose of pepper casued by Colletotrichum spphas been a great problems for pepper production in Korea and China. Especially Colletotrichum gloeosporioides was found predominantly over cultivation areas during infection periods and caused severe rots on bath unripe and ripe fruits that resulted in major yield losses. In this study, comparison of Colletrichum spp.isolated from Korea and China in morphology and pathgenicity, and RAPD-PCR analysis were conducted. Based on morphological characteristics, the pathogen isolates, K1 and C1, K2 and C2, and K3 and C3 were identified as Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (G) type, C. gloeosporioides (R) type and C. coccodes, respectively. in pathogenicity test, K1 and C1, and K2 and C2 were found to attack mainly fruits and to be the most virulent among isolates. K3 and C3 were strongly virulent to leaves and seedling. Pathogenicity between Korean and Chinese isolates. K3 and C3 were strongly virulent to leaves and seedling. Pathogenicity between Korean and Chinese isolates did not show any difference. Results of the RAPD-PCR analyses indicate the varying levels of molecular diversity within and between Colletotrichum spp.of Korea and China. The similarities between K1 and C1, K2 and C2, and K3 and C3 were 85.71%, 71.43% and 50.0% respectively.

  • The potential energy surfaces (PESs) for the primary and secondary dissociations of the phenylarsane molecular ion (1a) were determined from the quantum chemical calculations using the G3(MP2)//B3LYP method. Several pathways for the loss of $H{\cdot}$ were determined and occurred though rearrangements as well as through direct bond cleavages. The kinetic analysis based on the PES for the primary dissociation showed that the loss of $H_2$ was more favored than the loss of $H{\cdot}$, but the $H{\cdot}$. loss competed with the $H_2$ loss at high energies. The bicyclic isomer, 7-arsa-norcaradiene radical cation, was formed through the 1,2 shift of an $\alpha$-H of 1a and played an important role as an intermediate for the further rearrangements in the loss of $H{\cdot}$ and the losses of $As{\cdot}$ and AsH. The reaction pathways for the formation of the major products in the secondary dissociations of $[M-H]^+$ and $[M-H_2]^{+\cdot}$. were examined. The theoretical prediction explained the previous experimental results for the dissociation at high energies but not the dissociation at low energies.

  • Abiotic stress is one of the major serious limiting factors in rice (Oryza sativa) and caused rice production losses. It is important to precisely screen valuable genetic resources for improving stress tolerance and understanding tolerance mechanism to abiotic stresses. Because there are differences of experiment designs for screening of tolerant plant in several studies related to abiotic stress, this study has performed to provide the rapid and efficiency screening method for selection of tolerance rice to drought and salinity stresses. Two week-old rice seedlings that reached about three leaf stage were treated with drought and salinity stresses and examined tolerant levels with tolerant and susceptible control varieties, and transgenic plants. To determine the optimum concentration for the selection of drought and salinity condition, tolerant, susceptible and wild-type plants were grown under three soil moisture contents (5, 10 and 20% water contents) and three NaCl concentrations (100, 200 and 250 mM) for 10 days at seedling stage. 200 mM NaCl concentration and 5% moisture content soil were determined as the optimum conditions, respectively. The described methodologies in this study are simple and efficiency and might help the selection of drought and salinity tolerance plants at the 3,4-leaf-seedling stage.

  • The status of corn genetic diversity in the uplands of Sarangani in Southern Philippines was investigated using 12 morphological traits subjected to multivariate statistical analyses. Information about traditional farming, post-harvest and storage practices were also elicited especially in relation to losses of traditional varieties, a phenomenon known as genetic erosion. While a handful of farmers still plant traditional corn varieties in the remotest areas, a significant number had already shifted to genetically modified corn. Furthermore, principal component analysis (PCA) reduced the 12 morphological traits into 5 principal components and identified ear length and ear weight to be major contributors to variation. Cluster Analysis, on the other hand, formed two distinct groups but failed to give information about intra-cluster variability among the 32 collected corn accessions. These results warrant that more informative morphological traits and that molecular markers will be used to obtain a better picture of genetic diversity in Sarangani upland corn. Molecular analysis is also needed to establish genetic identities of these cultivars and to detect gene introgression from GM varieties into the gene pool of farmers' corn varieties. These analyses are imperative for the conservation of traditional corn varieties before they disappear in the Sarangani uplands because of shifting priorities of upland farmers.

  • Building become higher. larger and more complex than ever before, showing abrupt changes in building structures. forms and mechanical systems. Likewise hazads of fire and the scale of fire losses become more and more greater. Therefore. considerations for fire safety take up great portion of the building design process. In this study, problems of high-rise building fires and basic directions for fire safety of high-rise building design were studied through the statistical analysis of 138 fire cases. The results of this study are summarized as follows : ·Most of the fires in high-rise building occur on the low floors and the fire frequencies are very low on the upper floors. Fire casualties are liable to be more on the upper floors than on tile floor of fire origin. ·The important causes of evacuation failures were analyzed as being late in escape and lack of stairwell enclosures. ·The main cause of vertical fire spread is lack of stairwell enclosures. However, the fire spreads mainly through the enterior windows in apartment houses. The combustible materials in buildings act on as the major factors of horizontal fire spread and the improper fire doors play role of another the critical causes. ·The basic directions for fire safety of high-rise building design put much stress firstly on the compartmentation of the buildings effectively performing the provision of safe escape routes and the safe refuse places in buildings.

  • Recently. the spark and the overheat due to in the conductor breaks have been the major causes of electrical fire in low voltage wiring. Also, because in these cases the current is a surge one, the losses and faults of a communication, a home appliances, a computer and a measuring instrument may occur. Especially, in such cases, we are very difficult to detect the condition of the conductor breaks. In this paper, we have developed an auxiliary control device, the electrical fire prevention control device (EFPCD), of an earth leakage breaker (ELB). And we can prevent the electrical fire caused by the spark and the overheat occurring in the conductor breaks with the EFPCD.

  • These days leakage incidents of toxic materials cause serious effects on the nearby residents as well as the workers around the accidents accompanying massive material losses and human damages through widening influential areas. The risk measure through adequate quantitative analysis as well as the qualitative analysis of the leakage incidents of toxic materials becomes an urgent issue. The damage of the leakage incident on the surrounding area of the dangerous toxic material facilities was calculated quantitatively by adopting several models in this research. First, the calculations of the leakage velocity from the factories were performed by using source model for the assessment of the influential area, and the damages on the nearly residents were calculated by using the dispersion model and the effort model. The probability of the Incidents was computed based on "The manual for classification and priorization of major incidents" published by IAEA( International Atomic Energy Agency ). Above calculated damage area and incident probability were further adopted in this study to induce the individual and societal risk, quantitatively. The calculated data of the real Incident of the toxic material leakage showed reasonable agreements to the actual damage of the incidents, which showed a validity of this study. The result of this study might be a helpful measure for predicting damages and preparing safety systems for similar kinds of incidents.incidents.
