Experimental and numerical analysis of corrosion-induced cover cracking in reinforced concrete sample

  • Corrosion of embedded reinforcing bars is recognized as being the major cause of deterioration of reinforced concrete structures. With regard to maintenance strategies of concrete nuclear structures, the monitoring of cracking remains of primary importance. Recently, authors have developed a post-treatment technique to extract crack features from continuous computations. In this paper, such technique is applied to carry out a numerical analysis of an accelerated corrosion test. Obtained results allow highlighting specific propagation and failure mechanisms that characterize corrosion-induced cracking.

Full-scale experimental evaluation of a panelized brick veneer wall system under simulated wind loading

  • Brick veneer over steel stud backup wall is lighter and easier to construct compared to brick veneer over concrete masonry backup wall. However, due to the relatively low stiffness of the steel stud backup, the brick veneer tends to crack under wind load. This paper briefly introduces a new panelized brick veneer with steel frame backup wall system that is developed to potentially address this problem. The experimental study of the performance of this system under simulated wind loading is discussed in detail. The test setup details and the test specimens are introduced, results of major interests are presented, and performance of the new system is evaluated based on the test results.

  • Tunnel lining is the final support of a tunnel and reflects the results of the interaction between ground and support system. Recently it is very difficult to support and manage the tunnel because the cracks on tunnel lining cause problems in supporting and managing tunnels. Therefore the analysis of the cracks is quite strongly required. The major role played by the steel fiber occurs in the post-cracking zone, in which the fibers bridge across the cracked matrix. Because of its improved ability to bridging cracks, steel fiber reinforcement concrete(SFRC) has better crack properties than that of reinforced concrete. In this study, mechanical behaviour of a tunnel lining was examined by model tests. The model tests were carried out under various conditions taking different loading shapes, thicknesses and leakage of lining, and volume content of steel fiber. From these model test, the cracking load, the failure load, defection and cracking position and type were examined and the characteristics of deformation and failure for tunnel lining were estimated and researched.

  • Thermosets are highly cross-linked polymers with a three-dimensional molecular structure. The network structure gives rise to mechanical properties, however, one major drawback of thermosets, which also results from their network structure, is their poor resistance to impact and to crack initiation. In this study, to solve this problem, the reactive thermoplastics such as amine terminated polyetherimide (ATPEI), ATPEI-CTBN-ATPEI(ABA) triblock copolymer, CTBN-ATPEI(AB) diblock copolymer, and carboxyl group modified ATPEI was synthesized, after that blended with epoxy resin, and the carbon fiber reinforced composites were fabricated. The impact load, energy, and delamination were investigated by using drop weight impact test and C-scan test. As a results, the ABA/epoxy blend system showed good impact properties.

주물용 코우크스와 무연괴탄의 가스화 반응과 강도에 관한 연구 (A Study on Gasification Reaction and Strength of Foundry Coke and Lump Anthracite Coal)

  • The gasification reaction rates by $CO_2$ in $CO/CO_2/N_2$ of various compositions in the temperature range of $900-1200^{\circ}C$ were measured for foundry coke and anthracite lump. The data for the rates was analyzed with Langmuir-Hinshelwood rate equations for the gasification of carbonaceous specimens. The values of the apparent activation energies of the reactions obtained from these data were ranged to be 47-99 and 73-128Kcal/mol respectively for foundry coke and for anthracite lump. The major contribution to decrease in tensile strength was shown to be attributable to the enlarging of the macropores in the coke and that of crack in the anthracite lump. Under the same experiment of the gasification of foundry coke, the rate of form coke was increasing as the addition of $Fe_2O_3$ increases.

  • The brake system of railway plays an important role to enhance the speed of train, and the brake disc is one of major components relating to frictional braking. The performance enhancement of brake disc directly affects the braking performance of train. It is required to understand and investigate the factors need to be considered for the development of new brake disc with improved materials and performance. In this study, through the literature reviews of previous study, several factors including thermal crack phenomena, friction coefficient, materials and durability of disc, temperature characteristics, etc., were introduced for the design of improved brake disc. Moreover, based on the review results, the design direction of new brake disc was suggested. Eventually, a new brake disc with improved performance would be developed based on this investigation.

  • Many studies have dealt with strengthening by epoxy-bonded CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) composites. However, the effects of various influencing factors have not been clarified on the behavior of strengthened RC beams. This study was performed to verify the effects of strengthening due to various bond details of externally attached CFRP Composites. In this study, major test parameters include the bond type and the anchor type. The deflections, failure load, strain of reinforcing bar, concrete and CFRP are measured at each loading step. The failure mode and debonding loads(ultimate loads) are analysed from these measured data. According to the test results, all specimens are failed by intermediate flexural crack induced interfacial debonding.

  • Large-scale model tests of welded tubular K-joints were carried out to observe the fatigue behavior of API 2W Gr.50 steel produced by POSCO. The fatigue crack behaviors for various loading conditions were measured and investigated around the critical joint sections. The experimental results have been verified with numerical approaches and were also compared with the IIW, DnV RP-C203 and API RP 2A-WSD design curves. The hot-spot stress method was applied in the study. The SCF factor for tubular K-joint was also obtaine.

인서트 자동검사를 위한 시각인식 알고리즘 (A Machine Vision Algorithm for the Automatic Inspection of Inserts)

  • In this paper, we propose a machine vision algorithm for inspecting inserts which are used for milling and turning operations. Major defects of the inserts are breakage and crack on insert surfaces. Among the defects, breakages on the face of the inserts can be detected through three stages of the algorithm developed in this paper. In the first stage, a multi-layer perceptron is used to recognize the inserts being inspected. Edge detection of the insert image is performed in the second stage. Finally, in the third stage breakages on the insert face are identified using Hough transform. The overall algorithm is tested on real specimens and the results show that the algorithm works fairly well.

고로 슬래그 미분말을 사용한 고강도 콘크리트의 특성 (Properties of High Strength Concrete Incorporating Fine Blast Furnace Slag)

  • The object of this study is to investigate the strength characteristics and the freeze-thaw resistance of high strength concrete incorporating fine blast furnace slag. Major experimental variables were the water/cement ratio, maximum size of coarse aggregate, and cement types such as ordinary portland and slag cement. The results were as follows ; The workability of fresh concrete incorporating fine blast furnace slag was better than that of OPC(ordinary Portland cement) in terms of slump. The freeze-thaw resistance showed better than that of OPC, keeping more than 90% of relative modules of elasticity after 506 cycles and showing only a hair crack at surface without serious damage. Thus, the fine blast furnace slag might be recycled at concrete to make high strength concrete at fields.
