Steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) which is made by short, randomly distributed steel fibers in concrete is superior in its tensile mechanical properties to plain concrete in enhancement of tensile strength and tensile ductility. These improvements are attributed to crack arresting mechanism and formation of longer crack paths due to fibers , which as a consequence lead to increase in energy absorption capacity of SFRC. In the post-peak region under tensile stresses, major macrocrack forms at critical section. The opening of this macrocrack is mainly resisted by both of the fiber pull-out bridging the cracked surfaces and the resistance by matrix softening. In this study, micromechaincal approach has been made in order to simulate tensile behavior of SFRC and based on which the theoretical model is presented. This model reflects the features of both the composite material concept and the spacing concept in predicting tensile strength of SFRC. The model also takes into account for the effects of matrix tensile softening and fiber bridging by pull-out on the resistance for the post-peak behavior of SFRC. It has been shown that the developed model satisfactory predicts the experimental results.

Plastic shrinkage cracking is a major concern for concrete, especially for flat structures as highway pavement, slabs for parking garages, and walls. One of the methods to reduce the adverse effect of plastic shrinkage cracking is to reinforced concrete with short randomly distributed fibers. The contribution of cellulose fiber to the plastic shrinkage crack reduction potential of cement composites and its evaluation are presented in this paper. The effects of differing amounts of fibers(0.9kg/㎥, 1.3kg/㎥, 1.5kg/㎥) were studied. The results of tests of the cellulose fiber reinforced concrete were compared with plain concrete and polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete. Results indicated that cellulose fiber reinforcement showed an ability to reduce the total area and maximum crack width significantly(as compared to plain concreted to plain concrete and polypropylene fiber concrete).

The steam generator tubes of the nuclear power plant should be inspected using eddy current techniques. Recently the crack-like defects become a major concern for the integrity of the steam generator tubes. These defects could be detected by the MRPC(Motorized Rotating Pancake Coil) method, not by the conventional bobbin coil method. In this paper it has been attempted to estimate the length of the cracks at the tube expansion region using of MRPC technique. The lengths of both axial and circumferential cracks show a tendency of overestimation compared to the real lengths. As the depths of the defects decrease from 100% through 50% of the wall thickness, the error of the length estimation is increased.

Fracture mechanics does work for concrete, provided that one used a proper, nonlinear form of fracture mechanics in which a finite nonlinear zone at fracture front is being considered. The fracture process zone is a region ahead of a traction-free crack, in which two major mechanisms, microcracking and bridging, play important rules. The toughness due to bridging is dominant compared to the toughness induced by the microcracking, so that the bridging is the dominant mechanism governing the fracture process of concrete. In this paper the bridging zone, which is a part of extended macrocrck with stresses transmitted by aggregates in concrete, is modelled by a Dugdale-Barenblatt type model with lenear tension-softening curve for the analyses of crack growth in concrete Finite element technique is shown for inplementation of the model.

In this paper, the strengthening analysis by strut-tie model for strengthened shear failed RC deep beam by the so-called the Steel Clamping Unit (SCU), which is a strengthening equipment, is carried out. The analysis considers the span-to-depth ratio, the existence of prestressing and stirrup, the shape of shear crack, and the strengthening position of the SCU. Based on analytical results, optimized strengthening analysis and design are carried out by investigating the behavior of the strengthened deep beams. The comparison between analytical results and experimental results shows that optimum strengthening effect by the SCU can be obtained when compressive strut zone created by SCU is away from major shear crack of the beam as far as possible.
An approach for the damage of delamination which is the major concern during mechanical working for composite laminate material is proposed based on linear elastic fracture mechanics. This paper presents method evaluating of damage crack length using by average thrust force with AE characteristics. Also, the relations of AE characteristics are obtained from delamination damages. We found the onset ply of the delamination and a critical energy release rate and expressed a stress intensity factor by AEcount equation.

Thermal barrier coating (TBC) is used to protect the substrate and extend the operating life of the gas turbine for a power plant and an aircraft. The major cause of failure of such a coating is the spallation of coating, and it results from the thermal stress between top coating and bond coating. To improve the durability of TBC system, the dense vertical cracked (DVC) coating method to insert vertical cracks is applied to a gas turbine blade. In this study, a criterion for the design of vertical crack in the DVC coating was presented using the finite element analysis.
Reinforcement corrosion is one of the major problems in the durability of reinforced concrete structures exposed to aggressive environments. Deterioration caused by reinforcement corrosion reduces the durability and the safety margin of concrete structures, causing excessive costs in managing these structures safely. This paper aims to investigate the effects of reinforcement corrosion on the load bearing capacity deterioration of the corroded reinforced concrete structures. A new analytical method is proposed to predict the crack growth of cover concrete and evaluate the residual strength of concrete structures with corroded reinforcement failing in bond. The structural performance indicators, such as concrete crack growth and flexural strength deterioration rate, are assumed to be a stochastic process for lifetime distribution modelling of structural performance deterioration over time during the life cycle. The Weibull life evolution model is employed for analysing lifetime reliability and estimating remaining useful life of the corroded concrete structures. The results for the worked example show that the proposed approach can provide a reliable method for lifetime performance assessment of the corroded reinforced concrete structures.

Plastic shrinkage cracking occurs at the exposed surfaces of freshly placed concrete due to consolidation of the concrete mass and rapid evaporation of water from the surface. This so-called shrinkage cracking is a major concern for concrete, especially for flat structural such as pavement, slabs for industrial factories and walls. This study has been performed to obtain the plastic shrinkage properties of hydrophilic fiber reinforced mortar and concrete. The results of tests of the hydrophilic fibers were compared with plain and polypropylene fibers. Test results indicated that hydrophilic poly vinylalcohol fiber reinforcement showed an ability to reduce the total crack area and maximum crack width significantly (as compared to plain and polypropylene fiber reinforcement).

For major structural components periodic inspections and integrity assessments are needed for the safety. However, many flaws are undetectable because sampling inspection is carried out during in-service inspection. Probabilistic integrity assessment is applied to take into consideration of uncertainty and variance of input parameters arise due to material properties and undetectable cracks. This paper describes a Probabilistic Fracture Mechanics(PEM) analysis based on the Monte Carlo(MC) algorithms. Taking a number of sampling data of probabilistic variables such as fracture toughness value, crack depth and aspect ratio of an initial surface crack, a MC simulation of failure judgement of samples is performed. For the verification of this analysis, a comparison study of th PFM analysis using a commercial code, mathematical method is carried out and a good agreement was observed between those results.
