  • With the increased demand for membrane structures in recent years, there have been many studies of their mechanical properties, to the extent that such structures have become recognized as independent structures with a level of safety and durability comparable to those of other general structures. But in reality, the study for the maintenance of membrane structures has not been as active. In particularly, the study of watertightness from the perspective of maintenance has been very limited. Accordingly, a study on securing watertightness performance and the guidelines for maintenance is necessary. In this study, through a case study of water leakage accidents in membrane structures overseas, causes of leakage were selected from the membrane material itself, joint parts and open door of roof part in membrane structure. The water leakage and deterioration elements were analyzed from those leakage causes. The degree of importance of the water leakage and deterioration index was also designated using the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) method. As a result, the basic technical index was suggested for the maintenance of the roofs of large-span membrane structures to prevent water leakage. This index will be used to make a guideline for the long-term maintenance of the roofs of large-span membrane structures.

  • In this paper, a new method for the bridge maintenance is proposed to overcome the limit of the existing methods and to implement the preventive bridge maintenance system. The proposed method can establish the lifetime optimum maintenance strategy of the deteriorating bridges considering the life-cycle performance as well as the life-cycle cost. The lifetime performance of the deteriorating bridges is evaluated by the safety index based on the structural reliability and the condition index detailing the condition state. The life-cycle cost is estimated by considering not only the direct maintenance cost but also the user and failure cost. The genetic algorithm is applied to generate a set of maintenance scenarios which is the multi-objective combinatorial optimization problem related to the life-cycle cost and performance. The study examined the proposed method by establishing a maintenance strategy for the existing bridge and its advantages. The result shows that the proposed method can be effectively applied to deciding the bridge maintenance strategy.

  • Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is an effective alternative to conventional inspections which are time-consuming and subjective. SHM can detect damage early and reduce maintenance cost and thereby help reduce the likelihood of catastrophic structural events to infrastructure such as bridges. After reviewing the Damage Index Method (DIM), an Iterative Damage Index Method (IDIM) is proposed to improve the accuracy of damage detection. These two damage detection techniques are compared based on damage on two structures, a simply supported beam and a pedestrian bridge. Compared to the traditional damage detection algorithm, the proposed IDIM is shown to be less arbitrary and more accurate.

  • Pavement management systems require systematic monitoring of pavement surfaces to determine preventive and corrective maintenance. The process involves the accumulation of large amounts of visual data, typically obtained from site visitation. The pavement surface condition is then correlated to a pavement distress index that is based on a scoring system previously established by state or federal agencies. The scoring system determines if the pavement section requires maintenance, overlay or reconstruction. One of the surface distresses forming part of the overall pavement distress index is the Alligator Crack Index (AC Index). The AC Index involves the visual evaluation of the crack severity of a section of a pavement as being low, medium, or high. This evaluation is then integrated into a formula in order to obtain the AC Index. In this study a quantification of the visual evaluation of the severity of alligator cracking is carried out using photographs and the fractal dimension concept from fractal theory. Pavements with low levels of cracking were found to have a fractal dimension equal to 1.051. Pavements with moderate levels of cracking had a fractal dimension equal to 1.1754. Pavements with high degrees of cracking had a fractal dimension that varied between 1.5037 (high) and 1.7111 (very high). Pavements with a level of cracking equal to 1.8976 represented pavements that disintegrated and developed potholes. Thus, the visual evaluation of the state of cracking of a pavement (the AC Index) could be enhanced with the use of the fractal dimension concept from fractal theory.

  • In this paper, Seoulmetro that is the first operation organization which operates a city railroad rolling-stock maintenance RIMS(rolling stock information maintenance system) collected and analyzed a light maintenance data and introduced time a series analysis technique to find the way how to contribute to a use efficiency improvement of a city railroad. The purpose of time a series analysis is to remove a seasonal change including data and to check an irregular fluctuation. First of all, a collection range of the data comes under a light maintenance, however it needs a data of more than 3 years to check the seasonal change. We put a study for an accumulated scope that the data satisfy a period like this and are able to extend a range of the study when time flys forward. The data used for study is filtered using a movement average method after passing proper selection working and is solved with a method which looks for season index. Using the season index that was getten in here, we predict a light working frequency, if it has an irregular change, we will contribute it to a city railroad a use efficiency improvement and establish the cause by carrying out prevent maintenance in advance.

  • The present study proposed three inspection reliability indices which compared inspection results evaluated at in-depth(routine) inspection and in-depth safety inspection; Nominal inspection reliability index, Real inspection reliability index, and DS nominal inspection reliability index. The methods to improve the inspection reliability were also proposed. Since bridge inspection process is critical to ensuring the safety of bridges and identifying repair and maintenance needs, the quality of the inspection data produced from the inspection process is very important. Consequently, the inspection reliability indices were suggested to evaluate quality of current inspection practices. Specifically, approximately 85% of inspection errors evaluated by the DS nominal inspection reliability index are within 1 rating grade(equal to or less than damage score ${\pm}0.1$). In order to improve the inspection reliability, transportation agency should implement QC(Quality Control) practices and develop professional expertises of inspectors by higher requirements for inspectors, on-off line inspection training and etc.

  • Ballasted track has been widely used due to its flexibility. However, the plastic deformation of ballasted track causes the evolution of track geometrical errors, and hence it requires continuous maintenance; increase in number of trains, weight, and speed expedites maintenance frequency and cost as well. Ballast stiffness is well-known as an indicator of design and maintenance. In this regard, this paper aims to suggest the method to measure ballast track stiffness using light-weight deflectometer (LWD) and thus verify its applicability as a maintenance measure. Preliminary field tests determined simple field testing protocol to measure track stiffness. The apparent ballast stiffness by LWD shows good corelation with TQI (Track Quality Index) and maintenance length. That is, as average of apparent stiffness increase, TQI and tamping length decrease exponentially. Therefore, apparent stiffness can be used as an index for ballast condition assessment.

  • Due to the deterioration of water supply network and the deficiency of raw water, the water utility of local governments have performed various projects to improve their revenue water ratio. However, it is very difficult to estimate the cost for maintaining the revenue water ratio at higher level after completing the project, because local governments have different conditions affecting the operating and maintenance cost of water supply network. The purpose of this study is to present a procedure to estimate the operating and maintenance cost required to maintain the target revenue water ratio of the water supply network. For this purpose, we estimated the cost used only for operation and maintenance of water supply network of 164 local governments with the aid of K-Mean Clustering Analysis and the data from 40 representative local governments. Then, the regression analysis was performed to find relationship between revenue water ratio and the operating and maintenance cost with two different data sets generated by two classification methods; the first method classifies the local governments by means of k-means clustering, and the other classifies the local governments according to the index standardized by the operating and maintenance cost per unit length of water mains per revenue water ratio. The results shows that the method based on the index standardized by the cost and revenue water ratio of each government produces more reliable results for finding regression equations between revenue water ratio and the operating and maintenance cost only for water supply network. The estimated regression equations for each group can be used to estimate the cost required to keep the target revenue water ratio of the local government.

  • Indexes of safety, restoration, damage impact, and management reliability were developed to assess reliability of drinking water distribution networks (DWDNs) management. The developed indexes were applied to evaluate the reliability of the pipeline management stage during unexpected mechanical and hydraulic accidents of components. The results were used to support the decision-making process in effective management and maintenance by enhancing the administrator's system understanding and by helping to create appropriate maintenance and management policies. The results of this study indicated that application of a management reliability index to assess DWDNs reliability may help create a more effective plan for establishing DWDNs management and maintenance.

  • This paper presents an algorithm of automatically finding magnitude of each maintenance index regarding step response characteristic for speed control system of driving roller in rolling process. For speed response data with noise, we distinguished possible cases that the number of maximum values is 2 or more into three separate types. Also, we suggested a way of selecting a candidate for reasonable maximum overshoot in each type and developed a decision algorithm of checking whether a candidate chosen is correct maximum overshoot. In terms of two types of test, we showed that magnitude and position in time axis of maximum overshoot can be found well via such algorithm presented in this paper.
